With Smash Ultimate hitting this year, I wouldn't expect any more big first party games coming from Nintendo, that if they indeed all the annoucements come this year. There will be more 3rd parties for sure and I expect smaller games and another Wii U port, hopefully Mario Maker.

Man. Gonna be some crow eatin' here I bet. Nintendo has Pokémon and Smash for the holidays and they're STILL not showing their cards yet.

Nintendo underprojects, and if they're still confident in 20m, that says something.

If it's a 2018 unnaounced game, it won't be a big new game. It'd be a port of NSMBU or something else.

this.
E3 2017 wasn't crazy in terms of new announcements either. Their non E3 directs have a lot more content.
E3's problem this year wasn't the lack of new games....
E3's problem this year was Yoshi got delayed to who knows when. Probably at least Summer 2019. FE got delayed to Spring which is nebulous. And FE is kind of ugly right now. lol

No it wouldn't....

Smash 4

I've had a pretty great track record with my switch predictions so far. I predicted Switch would outsell the U entirely before it's first E3 before it launched, and predicted MK8 would outsell the U version entirely easily, among other things. So for now i'll stick with my opinion rather than a generic dismissal, hopefully it happens so we can find out. GOW on PS4 might give it a run but otherwise, unless i'm missing something it would do the business. Meanwhile everyone here will pull the line of 'no one could have seen that coming' as if there isn't a fuck ton of data to back it up.

I expect 1 or 2 smaller first party games but nothing more than that from a 1st party perspective. I assume some smaller 3rd party titles as well though I think Nintendo did a really good job of showing off the best of their 3rd party offerings at E3. Fortnite, Overcooked 2, Killer Queen Black, DBZ Fighters and the like all look really strong to me. Still, their heavy hitters are Super Mario Party, Pokemon, and Smash and they will all go on to be multi-million sellers. At least 2 of those will scratch my gaming itch for weeks if not months as well.

A port of NSMBU would probably outsell every exclusive released this year on PS or Xbox, sad to say. So it depends on your definition of big, not big for me, but big for Nintendo.
lol come on now. It wouldn't outsell God of War, and I doubt it would outsell Spider-Man.

Nintendo seems genuinely satisfied and confident in their current lineup for 2018. We'll see if they were right or not; I personally believe that they are underestimating how disappointing it is, and overestimating the capacity of a somehow casual/low production value Pokemon and a low effort smash Bros (just adding characters and changing the face of Wii fit trainer is low effort in my book) to carry the console. I may be completely wrong, but I hope I'm not because I do not believe that they deserve to get away with such a poor 2018.
Best case scenario is they still have a few aces up their sleeve for 2018, ala Doom last year; I really hope so. Maybe one of these supposedly impossible ports. Hopefully several.

LTD it definitely could, the ceiling is certainly much higher for the NSMB series than God of War or Spider Man. it's worst entry sold 5.7 million on an install base of whatever the Wii U ended at, 13 million or so. 30+ million on Wii, 30+ million on DS, 10+ million on 3DS. doesn't hurt that NSMBU is the best game in the series and also has local coop which pairs nicely with the Switch hardware.

they're leggy games though so it could be a while for it to happen but the potential is certainly there

any chance insiders got some info wrong and the "NSMBU+" is a new game just like Splatoon and Smash bros?

why people want 3dworld too?! aren't there enough mario (or Mario related) games yet on the system? -.- JUST BUY SOME THIRD PARTY GAMES INSTEAD for the love of the gods. I absolutely love mario but really, he need to stay away for a year or two at least after all these releases...

I meant it's first full year before e3, so second e3, clearly it wasn't going to sell 15 million in 4 months. Back in the day that notion was ridiculous and insane btw, as I recall being called as such on gaf :P

Great news to hear that we have not gotten the full 2018 lineup, there might be time to save this slow year yet!

Although I don't get why they didn't just announce the full lineup for 2018 at E3??

What more can they possibly announce that they just had to hold off at E3.

Wii U/Wii ports and third party ports.

Many insiders seemed genuinely suprised at how little Nintendo showed at E3, saying they knew there were quite a few other games they could have shown but for whatever reason they wanted to go all in on Smash.

Whether or not that's a good decision all signs point to them having a fair number of new announcements to make in the coming weeks or months.

It's going to be third party games and likely one more first party port

There is no way that Nintendo's E3 that they specifically said would focus on 2018 (which it didn't) did not even show all of their "new" 2018 first party games.

This. We know games were held back. We just have to wait for them to be announced of course.

I could actually see a few small directs planned more frequently than usual to coincide with Smash character reveals

I still want that Fallout 3 Anniversary and a New Vegas port for Switch. Gimme that and I can pack away my Xbox 360 for good.

Smash and Pokémon will certainly help them reach their 20m target but they won't do much for people who bought their Switch for games like Breath of the Wild or Super Mario Odyssey.

Who on earth brought their Switch for just those games? They had others.

EDIT: I mean I just never understand the rationale of buying a system for one or two games. It's just not a wise investment so surely you were interested in others.

Maybe because they have been moving away from "show everything at E3" for a long time now ?

They clearly have some Market Research that shows that people pay more attention to several spread out announcements than to some 2 hour presentation showing 50 games half of which people will have forgotten before the E3 week is over.

Summer/Fall is such a dead period for VG news, a Nintendo direct in that time period would get much more attention than having the same games share the attention of people with Smash, Lets Go and Fortnite.

Longer time between announcement and Release might be something people here on Era care about, but outside in the real world few people care if the game they like got announced 6 months or 6 weeks ago, just look at the "aviable now" games they had at E3, Hollow Knight sold like 1/4 of its PC lifetime sales in two weeks, while Fortnite released to 2m downloads in a matter of days.

September direct sounds about right.
My money is on July/August. Outside of Torna and Mario Party there's not much on the slate before Pokemon and Smash hit at the end of the year. September and October could probably do with another release or two.

I'm glad that they are hitting their production targets but with 2018's announced lineup Nintendo will struggle to move hardware. I wish they focused more on delivering a high-quality software lineup this year, particularly when both Sony and Microsoft have strong lineups.

TTYD remaster obviously

actually, the one good thing about nintendo treating paper mario as a complete afterthought (see Color Splash's announcement video), is that a remake could be announced with zero fanfare from them and release in like a month.
see? silver linings.

I'm kind of surprised by how many people are doubting them this holiday season. Nintendo is almost always bearish with their predictions so that they can tell their investors they've actually outperformed their estimates. If they say 20m, have Smash and Pokemon coming, and more titles to unveil, I'm inclined to believe.

I mean last E3 they pretty much went big and showed the whole lineup for 2017, so compared to that they seemed to throw us all for a loop this year.

Last year wasn't that much different though. Nintendo revealed their entire Switch 2017 lineup at the January showcase. They didn't have to show much because everything was already announced, they just needed to give some proper release windows as well as show a few 2018 and beyond titles.

People in the know who have solid reputations have stated a bunch of times that Nintendo for reasons unknown sat on a number of titles that could have been shown. Probably several of those are ports but even ports can be big enough if its the right titles used as lineup fillers. In the end Nintendo is going to Nintendo and there is nothing wrong with that and we should all expect it by now.

Nintendo was wrong about 3DS sales every year. Every. Single. Year.

Smash is coming too late and I don't think Pokemon will be as big some people here expect. Nintendo won't reach its objective, The question is to know if they'll fail greatly or not.

And also the Wii U. Yes it's the Wii U, but still. They've been wrong plenty of times before.
