I will consider this console a success of it ever makes it to market. Just being available to purchase will be a win for it, given those bulletpoints

And sad to see how far Tommy has fallen lol. It's a paycheck I guess

I'm sitting here trying to understand the rational for this, the point where it all makes sense, and I'm getting nothing.

Why would a developer want to risk time, effort, and money making a game only for that game not to measure up to such high standards?

All of this feels like it's trying to fit into some idealistic notion that doesn't work in reality (and rankly is a little grating to see; everything MUST be E? Will it at least have E10+?)

I will be interesting in seeing how they make it look. I'm not particularly interested in actually getting it.

Why would anyone develop an exclusive title for it instead of releasing on Steam, Switch and all current consoles? Unless they give you A LOT of cash in return I just don´t see it happening.

All well and good but -- the question is -- did you buy the Amstrad GX4000!?!?!

I'm sure this will end horribly, but I'm interested to see how it all turns out. I love stupid stuff like this and would love to pick up the final product on clearance to check out the handful of games that actually come to market.

This feels like the midlife crisis/desperate clinging to youth of consoles. "It will be just like I was a kid. It will be a pure experience where all the games are pefect and it won't have any of that 3d shit".

This will likely fail, but I guess good on them for trying.

Hey guys, develop a game for our system and our system only, and if it reviews less than 7/10, it can't be on the system that you exclusively developed it for.

What a load of shit. This is DOA.

You're not wrong.

I can only find two possible explanations:
- Planetoid-sized amounts of hubris.
- A "Springtime for Hitler" scheme (does he have external investors?).

Tommy seems like a good guy. I can't see this succeeding, but I hope they deliver something interesting at least. Some of what he says makes some kind of sense (quality controlled casual focus), but a lot of it sounds unworkable or bad (building on IPs nobody really cares for, the dubious sounding controller, etc).

Me and BronsonLee has acquired the rights to the Turbografix 16. Our new console will do 8K, HDR, and VR for a base price of 699$. But will only play Bonk and will require a RF modulator for DRM purposes.

This is the kind of shit you'd except Marge Simpson to buy, a nice CHRISTIAN console so that Bart stops play BloodMulcher 3000 on his Fentendo SWAGMASTER
Like, what is Violence? Is Mario too violent? People die in Oregon trail! Who does this idiot think he is? Fricken preschoolers are playing and LOVING Fortnite and such
No 3D? Why? Is the third dimension the work of the devil?

It's like one of those specialty toy stores that you never want to go to because it only sells expensive learning toys, stuffed animals, and wood cars and trains.

GamesIndustry.biz also did some reporting on a recent interview with Tallarico.

https://www.gamesindustry.biz/artic...onsole-will-have-all-new-games-all-exclusives

Speaking to n3rdabl3 via podcast, Tallarico said that Intellivision's upcoming console(which does not have an officially announced name yet) will feature all new games, all of which will be exclusives

"We are paying people, very talented people," Tallarico said. "We have big publishers, huge publishers, mid-size publishers, we've got big developers, we've got small developers, medium developers, and if there's a concept that they bring to us, then we're going to take all of the risk away from them, financial risk as well, and we'll front-load all of the royalties."

Those games, too, will be cheap; between $3 and $7. Though Tallarico didn't say outright what kinds of exclusives the console would have, he gave a bit of a hint later that at least some would be enhanced versions of Atari classics. As he put it, "Imagine being able to play Pitfall 40 years later with completely amazing photorealistic graphics, incredible movie sounds. We're not going to mess with the thing that made the game super popular."

Which is a hilarious thought because back in the mid 90s Tommy was done with baby 2D.

I'm one of the few 40.000 owners of this Spaceship GX4000, sold with a strange and Burning Rubber.

I know this console was very, very, very, very (...) outdated and destined to die quickly but Amstrad was my first contact with video games in 1988, so when I got this piece of... spaceship, I was happy (but my parents got the NES bundle Teenage Mutant <strike>Ninja</strike> HERO Turtles and... the rest is history).

If you don't get Ys IX and Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon 2 kiss your business good bye!

(Actually get all prior Ys games, Falcom loves them some ports.)

This is going to be an interesting one to watch - and at least they have a vision, unlike the Atari VCS which just seems to be another box with Netflix on it.

I have my doubt about it's success - but his pitch is certainly inspiring :-)

Good luck!

If you could release a guaranteed 7/10 metacritic 2D indie game, why would you release it here and not on Switch, iPhone, or Steam? Or better yet, Switch, iPhone, and Steam, since they don't mandate exclusivity just for the right to publish?

The console sounds like the fever dream of a message board fanboy drunk on nostalgia about how pure gaming used to be.

How can you possibly make money off of $3-$7 dollar games with "photorealistic" graphics. Games that are as high quality as they say, they aren't cheap to make at all. And if they are upfronting development costs, how are they going to make money off this?

Games will either end up being really shallow and cheap, or not able to realistically make up any cost of developing it.

So you make or port your game, it gets 6/10 review and they pull it from sale?

That sure encourages support.

And how they can be simple 2d games that soccer moms can understand easily and also be photorealistic? Are they going to remake these old games with digitized sprites?

Because if so I'm in.

No ports though, only original content in here.

This sounds completely unworkable from a business standpoint. None of it really makes any sense. Going to have to wait and see how this plays out.

It sounds like they're just paying established devs to reskin old games.

Like, they're going to Sumo Digital or whatever and saying "Here's $30k, a greenscreen, and the SNAFU license. Have a small team of like three people emulate it on our console with prettier graphics and you'll get a cut of the $7 we'll sell it for."

The team doesn't really lose anything, gets paid to work for a week or whatever, and there's a possibility that they could make money on the back end. As a dev I'd probably go for it. Not sure how it makes sense from the console-maker angle, though, unless there's actually a market for cheapo games that play like crap compared to what we're used to with gussied-up-but-still-outdated graphics.

I had an Intellivision as a kid and loved it.

This thing, though, seems really bizarre. I can understand playing the original games, but new games?

I guess it aims to be the console of choice for little kids, now we can agree or not with the policy... but objectively there are 2 points that are conflicting:
-no ports
-at least 7/10 score

if a game is a port they know if a game is a 7/10 and to accept it or not, but if a game isn't a port how can they know if it's at least 7/10? Will a game be available only if it gets at least 7/10?

I don't think they're looking at reviews. They'll have people test the games out to determine if it's good enough to be released on the platform.

This whole thing sounds like the business plan of a caffeinated seven-year-old. "It's gonna have all original games, they're gonna be super kewl that look real, not cartoons, and terrific sounds and music and explosions, and everyone's gonna love them and they'll be really cheap, it's gonna be AWESOME!"
