As someone else said in this thread, Tallarico has always been kinda "out there" and isn't afraid to share his opinion, even when it isn't the most informed. Conceptually, there are some dubious bits. However, the guy does good work and I've witnessed how infectious his passion can be when he really gets behind something. If it was just a talking head, I'd agree with the Phantom 2.0 bits. But in this case, I think there's a good chance the hardware materializes, even if it is something different from what he's suggesting (it has to be).

Real talk it hurts my soul we almost a got a Bonk reboot in the 360 days but it died in development.

Same here. At least we got the Adventure Island reboot from the same company... that nobody bought. I'm sure Bonk would've gotten the same lack-of reception, so maybe it was better this way.

Doesn't Konami own Bonk now?

Hey now, Burning Rubber was great!

i have one :D Switchblade is a great game! True killer app, and you'll enjoy it as there are no other games worth getting...

I'm one of the few 40.000 owners of this Spaceship GX4000, sold with a strange and Burning Rubber.

I know this console was very, very, very, very (...) outdated and destined to die quickly but Amstrad was my first contact with video games in 1988, so when I got this piece of... spaceship, I was happy (but my parents got the NES bundle Teenage Mutant <strike>Ninja</strike> HERO Turtles and... the rest is history).

It's just a shame this system came out just as the Megadrive and SNES were around the corner. Had the GX4K been designed with a 16-bit architecture, I feel it would have been a UK / European hit. Really nice design of the system too with some well received games.

Got an e-mail:

INTELLIVISION® TO REVEAL EXTENSIVE DETAILS OF NEW VIDEO GAME CONSOLE ON OCTOBER 20TH
Intellivision Entertainment President Tommy Tallarico to Keynote the Portland Retro Gaming Expo in Portland, OR

IRVINE, CA, September 12, 2018 - Intellivision® Entertainment is proud to announce that it will be revealing extensive details about its upcoming new family home video game console at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo on Saturday, October 20th. Intellivision president and industry veteran Tommy Tallarico headlines the show as the keynote address for the largest retro video game convention in the world. Information to be revealed includes the name, logo and branding of the new console, the hardware specs (including the revolutionary new controller), launch date, price point, online capabilities, new & unique approach to doing business in the game industry, games available at launch, partners, publishers, game licenses, marketing strategy, developer relationships and game funding, technical specifications for game developer tools, the team and advisors behind Intellivision Entertainment, special guests, game industry supporters and backers... and much more... including a FIRST LOOK at what the new console and controllers will look like (3D renders only).

Intellivision Entertainment will also be sponsoring an exclusive Blue Sky Rangers panel consisting of never before heard original Intellivision past management as well as programmers and artists to discuss the revolutionary products and video game industry "firsts" they pioneered. Six of the biggest and brightest stars of the early 80's era of Intellivision will be together again for the first time. Aside from the keynote address, Mr. Tallarico will also be presenting a separate talk explaining retro game audio creation from the 80's & 90's. All three of the Intellivision talks will be streamed LIVE and archived on the Intellivision Entertainment social media pages and website. The first 2,000 convention attendees and the first 500 keynote address attendees will receive an exclusive special limited edition Intellivision lanyard.

Intellivision Entertainment is bringing the concepts of SIMPLE, AFFORDABLE, FAMILY & FUN back into homes across the world with the introduction of their brand new home video game console. The original Intellivision system generated many "firsts" in the video game industry including the first 16-bit gaming machine, the first gaming console to offer digital distribution, the first to bring speech/voice to games, the first to license professional sports leagues and organizations and the first to create and utilize a directional pad (D-Pad) for game controls. Originally released in 1979, due to its popularity it was remarkably retailed across 3 decades and quickly sold millions of units. The new Intellivision system will carry on the company tradition of "firsts" with its new concept, design and approach to gaming.

Well, I always just viewed this as a fun fantasy to see anyway. Half expect it won't get any further than that.

Yeah, there's been a decent amount of people I've seen on Twitter saying there's more to this an odd-sounding premise.

I'm laughing my ass off at those quotes in the OP. It's like a bunch of 10 year olds designing a console in their tree house.

This is definitely going to be an interesting console experiment, regardless of its success/failure. It sounds to me like they are trying to create an alternate history where the old Atari-era games were basically arcade machines with access to the highest quality graphics and sound, while still being as simplistic as they were back then. It's an interesting concept because I do play classic arcade games and even Atari 2600 games once in a while and they are fun. And I like simple games like Flappy Bird, which would fit on this console if it had better graphics/sound and a bit more variety.

I'm skeptical about the chances of the console becoming what the company is envisioning, but I definitely want to see what that idealistic console would be like, and if it would find a niche audience large enough to sustain it.

My thoughts exactly. Excited to see how it pans out but incredibly dubious it'll be a success.

I'm curious to see what comes of this project. I've long enjoyed classic video games from the 70s and 80s, which were easy to grasp, yet still challenging, and dealt out short bursts of fun. This spirit lives on today in some of the downloadable indie games.

There may be room for a system that focuses on this concept, even if it does only appeal to a niche market. It needs to be easy to use and affordably priced. Personally, my vision for such a system differs a little from what has been described so far. I'm still interested in hearing what they have to announce.

I'm not expecting much at all tbh. Just hope it's something decent Intellivision fans can enjoy; doesn't have to be something for bigger audiences.

This is way too long-winded for a reveal. Also sounds far away.

Though that Atari dig was amusing...

This whole thing has been super weird and the pitch basically feels like "Old Man Yells at Cloud", like all these restrictions they're putting on the content that can be on the system just seems silly.

Like, every single discussion ever about either the colecovision or the intellivision always, always begins with people bitching about those controllers. The problems with them have been discussed to fucking death. Literally decades of people bitching about those controllers... and this thing imitates everything bad with the original controllers.

Holy fuck that's so amazingly stupid.

IGN Article reiterating the majority of these points.

http://ca.ign.com/articles/2018/07/...llivision-reboot-console-controller-and-games

Perhaps more importantly, however, is what you won't see on the Intellivision:
  • Violent Games: "[If it's] violent, if it's not E for Everyone, then no it's not going on the console." Tallarico wants the console itself to be rated E for Everyone.
  • Complicated Games: "If you can't explain the game in 10 seconds, or if it needs a manual, it's not on our system."
  • 3D Games: "There's not going to be any 3D. We're not trying to compete with Nintendo. We're not trying to build the next Zelda.... We're not going to be creating 3D worlds."
Also confirms the color touch screen for the controller that was hinted at in Tallarico's livestream.

-Original Post-

This is something all right...

This sounds like something I want nothing of. The worst of this is the complicated games. While yes, it is a pain to get in them, they can be the most fun once you learn them (this is why I like RPGs... and I hate the simplification of RPGs damnit).

And I'm sorry, I tend to like violent games. And I certainly don't want a game that is trying to make sure to cater to little kids too. Some of them can be fun but they aren't what I really get into. I mean some of my favorite settings are post apocalypse stuff!

Anyways, good luck. I love how they say they aren't trying to compete with Nintendo but if htey are trying to go with family friendly games they are going to be competing with Nintendo.

That sounds like the complete antithesis of what I want from a console. The only way to make it less appealing would be to add motion controls.

launch date is 10-10-2020

SDKs go out sometime around 6-2019

meaning devs are supposed to invest a year and a half development time on exclusives for this before they can even make a single dime? And remember, no ports.
