North Korea says high-level talks with a U.S. delegation led by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo were "regrettable" and has accused Washington of trying to unilaterally pressure the country into abandoning its nukes.

The statement by an unnamed North Korean Foreign Ministry spokesman on Saturday came hours after Pompeo concluded two days of talks with North Korean officials led by Kim Yong Chol.

The statement says that the United States betrayed the spirit of last month's summit between President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un by making unilateral demands on "CVID," or the complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization of North Korea.

It says the outcome of the follow-up talks was "very concerning" because it has led to a "dangerous phase that might rattle our willingness for denuclearization that had been firm."

Who didn't see this coming? Is it bad I trust NK on this?

Yeah...maybe reminding Kim about the time you kept insulting by calling him 'Rocket Man' wasn't such a good idea.

"Accuses" is a laughable way of phrasing it. Of course we are asking for unilateral denuclearization. That should have been obvious to everyone from the start. Who believed that the US would give up its own nukes as part of this deal?

While this is predictable NK negotiating 101 - is it to actually keep working towards denuking, or was the whole thing BS from them from the start.

Sadly, it's likely the latter.

They say the talks went south because the US called for verifiable denuclearization, which they said now wavers their intentions to denuclerize.

Sounds like their intention was to "denuclerize" without verification, which means nothing, to the surprise of no one.

Pretty remarkable that the US has succeeded in making North Korea the sane party in these talks.

Just playing ourselves over and over.

I feel bad for PM Moon
I mean he had to know this was a possibility coming in. NK has done this about a thousand times up to this point. Hope springs eternal and all, but expect nothing other than a knife in the back when it comes to negotiating with NK. They've done it to every president whom has ever sat down with them, and it should shock no one if they do it again now.

If they don't denuke, the crippling sanctions will continue and eventually get worse. NK is already on the verge of of collapse, which would put a quick end to Kim's reign. At the very least, NK needs to keep the peace-train rolling. The photo-op alone won't protect him.

Does anyone speak Korean here? What is the translation of "regrettable"? I always see it in public statements made by the ROK about inter-Korean confrontations or deteriorations in relationship.

I'll take "things that armchair analysts have constantly said for the last 30 years yet are always wrong" for 500, Alex.

"Unilateral demands" reads to me there was no deal to be made in the first place, unless you want us to give up our nuclear arsenal in order for NK to give up theirs.
NK likely wants a withdrawal of US troops from SK, and the removal the nuclear umbrella in the region - which ain't going to happen.

Well, this is why everyone with a grasp of the issues and a memory longer than a goldfish said skipping the initial meetings to establish the boundaries and understandings of an actual agreement so that two nuclear-armed, morbidly obese man-children could have a mutual propaganda circle-jerk -- was a bad idea.

Having nuclear capability is what keeps his regime in power. They will never willingly give this up. No nuclear state that is at odds with the US would.

China has already eased sanctions enforcement and there have been no signs North Korea is on the verge of an economic collapse because of the 'maximum pressure' campaign: http://www.nkeconwatch.com

Oh, no doubt. But if NK wants the sanctions removed (or lessened by a country that isn't China), they need to work out something. Pulling their usual crap, which is being pulled here, doesn't help their cause.

THANK YOU. The sanctions have stymied its international reach, but that was pretty much limited to reflagging its ships and basically slave labour exported to Russia, Qatar, Kuwait, China, Poland, Mongolia, and former 'commie' countries in Africa.

i dont get why anyone thought a highly vulnerable nation like NK would just give up its most important form of deterrence just because a goofy looking American "leader" asked them to.

the whole idea was absurd fron the get go.

now we all have to wait in fear how Trump reacts to this "betrayal". will he listen to Bolton and start a war to repair his damaged ego? i guess we'll see. fun times ahead.

100% this. I get it's fun to shit on Trump and blame him for everything, but this is what NK has done for decades. It's what they always do. They've done it to the past presidents, and to Moon. This isn't something special to Trump. And it's not a "poor Moon" situation.

What is special to Trump is the incredible idiocy, naivety and lack of preparation and care he brought to the table.

With a pair of bad actors in a meeting makes it hard to determine who is to blame here.

That doesn't change anything in terms of this being classic NK. The US has had meetings and "deals" with NK numerous times, and it always ends the same way. And again, NK publicly deemed SK incompetent after their meetings. This is what they do, every time.

This isn't to defend Trump or any potential lack of preparedness. But this right out of NK's playbook.

Why? This is classic NK. It likely has nothing to do with Trump's admin. It was after one of SK's meetings that NK deemed them (SK) incompetent and cancelled future meetings. This is what they do.
It's going to be real fun to go through and collect your posts on this topic once it's all over to see the progression of goalpost moving lmao

Now, will Trump just ignore this and pretend everything will work out due to his amazing deal making, or will he feel another betrayal like with those meanies in NAFTA, EU, NATO...?
If the latter, will he actually escalate with military action?
