So, back in the days of the original Xbox, and the first few years of the Xbox 360, there was this common sentiment or meme or whatever you want to call it that the Xbox line of consoles was basically the successor to the Sega line. Memes were made about it, sites such as Kotaku and 1Up wrote articles about that, and a lot of the personnel from Sega of America even got on to the Xbox team.

The close relationship between Microsoft and Sega, the possibility of MS acquiring Sega, and Dreamcast backward compatibility on the Xbox, were all matters that further fed this perception, I am sure. And for a while, it wasn't without merit. Xbox employed a similar style of branding, focused on similar kinds of games, catered to the same kind of market, and got the weird wacky Japanese support Sega had had, especially on the first Xbox.

My question is, in today's day and age, do you still view the Xbox line of consoles as the successor to Sega consoles? Why or why not?

Some people did when it was originally released it was a MS console and MS powered the dreamcast or something like that.

Way before memes LOL

If I'm not mistaken I believe the Xbox originally was supposed to be a new Sega or vice versa and one of them turned it down. It was real not a meme lol

The Sega consoles have no spiritual successor. The Dreamcast was a great machine that didn't deserve its fate, but there's no reason to see it as an Xbox predecessor even if for nothing else than the perception of the companies in the Japanese public.

I think the Sega-Xbox association ended with 360. That said, if there was a new Sega console it would be similar to 360 and One but only because MS set the standard for modern console design.

It would be tight to see another 2nd party partnership between the two. More Panzer Dragoon and Jet Set Radio.

I did in the OG Xbox days due to Smile.Bit - it's why I got an OG Xbox after the Dreamcast died rather than a PS2 or GameCube, actually - but not at this point.

Nah, Xbox has its own identity. I never viewed the platform in any way similar to Sega.

Only hardcore Sega fanboys ever considered the Xbox to be a successor. Laughable really, when Sega were multiplatform.

I bought an original Xbox to get that Sega support and never regretted it, but to think Xbox by Microsofts hand is anything like Sega is a joke. One put out defining games that for some of us defined the hobby in a special way, the other plays it as safe as possible trying to juice as much out of each title they can with almost no creative spirit behind their titles, and anytime someone under their wing tries to create greatness they tend to be snuffed out by MS in some way or another. Unless i'm missing the Banjo Nuts and Bolts, Viva Pinatas and Blue Dragons of the Xbox One generation.

Rare was MS biggest chance at having a neighbor of the Nintendo/Sega style, and they turned them into a Kinect/Avatar studio for a decade.

Kkkkkkkinda, but it's a sensation that waned over time of course. There was a flurry of releases that definitely felt more distinctly Dreamcasty on the Xbox originally. Jet Set Radio Future, Gunvalkyrie, Crazy Taxi 3, Panzer Dragoon Orta and so on cemented it as the platform for that particular Dreamcast "indie" vibe of Sega games, while Gamecube and Playstation got the more tried and true stuff like Virtua Fighter and Sonic games. I actually finished Orta properly for the first time just a couple of weeks ago thanks to it going BC, and it's brought this notion back into my mind quite recently.

The Xbox One feels a lot like a combination of Saturn and Dreamcast in that its woes were initially Microsoft's own fault. And then, much like the Dreamcast, it quickly saw a lot of quality releases that never really found the traction they deserved because its reputation was so damaged at that point. You also have the more direct correlation because Microsoft worked with Sega on the Dreamcast, and the controller is still very much born from the lineage of NiGHTS -> Dreamcast pads.

So... I guess yes and no. To younger folks it's probably not there at all.

Maybe it felt like that in the beginning but over time it lost that identity and became its own thing.
The wacky japanese titles are more likely to come to the 2 current japanese consoles (or more like the consoles popular in japan, which Xbox is not)

Eh, OG Xbox, yes. In my head, it still is a grand Sega successor -- a lot of really great exclusive Sega games or Sega-published games were Xbox exclusive. I had plenty of fun playing Halo LANs with friends prior to getting my own Xbox, but it wasn't a must-have console for me until JSRF launched.

The 360 and beyond, though? Nah. The legacy stopped with OG Xbox. Sega spread out a lot more after their OG Xbox stuff seemingly failed to find a sustainable audience.

No, but I used to. We didn't really have PlayStation growing up, we had Sega and Nintendo. After the Dreamcast fizzled out we got the original Xbox.

What do you mean "still"? Never thought that. Hell, lots and lots of modern Sega games that you can't even get on Xbox.

I never did, and honestly I never even realized that some folks did in the first place. I must not have been on the net much back when the Xbox launched. I think my net time was like 70% Save Farscape's website and 30% GameFAQs guides...

At first, yeah. I was a big fan of DC at the time and when Sega left the business it seemed like MS came in a filled the void. The controller was similar (memory card slots, button placement), it had a focus on online play, and it carried on some similar franchises

Now though, the platforms are much more similar, most games come out on everything and the feature sets are pretty similar.

No, but there was definately an affiliation between the companies in the early days, which was why we got things like Shenmue 2, Panzer Dragoon, Jet Set Radio Future , Sega GT, Crazy Taxi 3, House of the Dead III, Outrun 2 and Toejam and Earl.

I never did.

Looking back in hindsight I see why some did.

I looked at Sony because of the rise of PlayStation and the death of Sega consoles happening together. And the only competitor to Nintendo was Sega, then it was Sony before MS came in the picture.

Yeah, like there was even a thread on how many people thought of the OG Xbox as the spiritual successor to Dreamcast on NeoGAF not three years ago lol.
Like, it wasn't an uncommon sentiment.

I don't think this was ever the perception, aside from the minor stuff around the Xbox OG launch. Windows CE being used for some Dreamcast games was a joke, the only games that took advantage of it had horrendous loading times. I think Sega Swirl is one of the few I can remember, although I do believe it powered the web browser also. Then there was the Sega exclusives on Xbox like JSR Future, Panzer Dragoon, Crazy Taxi 3, Otogi, etc. But I don't know if these ever made a splash outside the hardcore crowd.

I always thought it was a weird loose association that never really turned into anything. Sega was probably hurting for cash around this time and MS needed some Japanese exclusives. That's likely about it.

The OG Xbox basically is the Dreamcast 2.

But that dies right there.

360 and XBONE have it's own identity

It have almost been true during those og Xbox days, with that Dreamcast BC that almost almost came true, the Chihiro arcade board and those 10 exclusive games, but that's it.
Microsoft consoles since the X360 have had nothing in common with Sega ones, and also their few exclusives are all elsewere.
If there are still some of those Sega fans thinking that Xbox consoles can be somehow considered Sega ones' spiritual successors then they're pretty crazy and delusional.

Have you ever wondered why the OG Xbox is so big? If you open it up theres two Dreamcasts inside. The X stands for Sega X Microsoft. Ever wondered why the xbox duke has a similar shape and style to the Dreamcast controller? Yep it;s basically a piece of black plastic and a Dreamcast controller is inside.

HL3 confirmed.
