So reality has indeed set itself in for me for the Cow Palace show.

This was a New Japan show where Juice Robinson and Jay White had match of the night and I can't help but feel a little put off by that statement.
  • Jay White really had really come into his own and showed great confidence in him which strengthened that match. You could've told me Juice Robinson was born in the Cow Palace parking lot and I would've believed you. He was that over.
  • Why would you ever book Michael Elgin in anything ever when you have Jeff Cobb?
  • Naito in t-shirt mode and no Rainmaker was a bummer for me the more I think about it but that's par for the course when you sell that many tickets. It was house show work for them and I just have to deal with it. Especially since it was clear that the gaijin's were the stars that night.
  • I thought the ladder and table spots for Cody and Omega somewhat made me think those elements served as a bit of a crutch for Cody's in-ring style which arguably isn't at the level of standards of a New Japan main event. So the need for a ladder superplex was just a spot to satiate the crowd who were definitely not getting an Okada/Omega caliber match. That let me down a bit.
  • I didn't think anything out of the ordinary was looming as soon as Hiromu took THAT BUMP. It was horrific but I personally thought he looked ok. But that ending definitely felt like an audible.
  • Josh Barnett was the largest man to ever step into that ring that night. Next to Haku.
  • You could see JR's hat from space.
Overall I was generally happy with what I got; but I wouldn't travel across the country for it. The Long Beach show had a better main event, CP had the better overall show.

The optimist in me hopes they come back with a bigger and better card rather than just sticking to Long Beach. Because I want to be 40 minutes away from a New Japan show damn it!

From everything I heard it wasn't. They went through all their final spots as planned as far as I've heard.

Conversely this show basically convinced me that I'd travel anywhere again card unseen (and not bitch ahead of time) again because there wasn't a single match I was disappointed by... even Naito and Okada in not peak mode.

I saw Hirmou land on his head and didn't believe it happened because they just kept going like he didn't just land on his fucking head so I just thought he's a genetic freak and he's not normal.

Maybe he'll be like another genetic freak Brock Lesnar and never do a spot that could fuck up his neck again.

Yeah by all means I'm super happy you enjoyed yourself; I'm not much of a traveler myself. It was the atmosphere that carried the night. God bless that public high school auditorium on steroids Cow Palace. May it forever live on because there's serious talks about tearing it down because there's only so much Mega Church Sermons and gun shows the Bay Area market can help sustain.

Well on one hand Hiromu was able to finish the match and is conscious and talking right now so that's promising. On the other hand people don't collapse backstage for no reason.

I'm not much of a religious type but how many altars do I have to pray to in order to get Jeff Cobb on the G-1 instead of Elgin?

I'm so glad that the update about Hiromu sounds positive... my partner came with me to the Cow Palace show, and she has anxiety just watching events live at home because of the risk of injury. She's been watching regularly with me for about a year, so this was her first ever live wrestling event. Hiromu is one of her absolute favorites too. It's been a weird day having had such an incredible time but seeing the news about his injury right as we were finally going to bed last night and checking our phones for an update on his status constantly since then.

Get well, you incredible wildman...

This is one of those things that someone is going to have to step in one of these days.
Dragon Lee wrestled like 4 matches in 48 hours, he had no business being in there like that, not wrestling that style.
With talent doing cross promotion work, this is going to be a thing more and more and I understand that it is a money thing and you have to go while you can go but during Mania weekend in New Orleans some people did 6-8 matches over that weekend.
God damn.
Just going to keep monitoring reports and hope for the best.
Edit: as far as the ending I think it was the way it was planned to but I think you could tell when Hiromu was holding the ropes to stand up right after and Dragon Lee did not really know what to do and kicked his arms off of the ropes I think something was said to let him know.
The Time Bomb was the finish but you could tell he could barely finish it.
The bad ass walked his ass back up the aisle turning to pop the crowd before going through the curtain...

Interesting to consider Ricochet couldn't wrestle in LB last year but Cobb could this year. Could just speak to leaving LU on friendlier terms or times just changing.

Also sidenote I don't think it's a coincidence that as soon as White ditched the low rent The Cleaner cosplay that he came into his own.

His red gear was fucking dope.

Jay White really came into his own with the Finlay match and Juice was the perfect babyface for him. Compare his reactions there vs Hangman Page.

Big step for him now is to make that character work across different matchups, because the Juice matchup was a perfect storm. G1 experience will be invaluable.

I don't think Cobb has left LU, has he? I think it's just been agreed you can do whatever you want after they're done with filming.

Saw the show today. Thoughts:

That Hiromu spot was terrible but I did think he was still fine given he got back up. Hope he's fine and wrestles a little safer.

The Cody/Kenny match was disappointing, but with context it's fine. I became a Kenny fan through his matches with Okada; most of his feuds can't compare to that. Also, I'd be shocked if even one match on Extreme Rules next weekend is as good. So, y'know...levels to this.

Evil and Sanada vs. TYB? Awesome. Reminds me of when the Revival was having these classics with American Alpha and DiY and someone asked Matt and Nick how they felt; they laughed and said "We do matches of that level all the time" . I thought it was such cocky BS I was seriously turned off. But watching them over the last year or so, their floor really does seem to be "really good", and thats crazy.

I was so hype to see Juice get the win. Good for him. Hope he holds it to WK or longer.

I'm not sure how I feel about the Tongans leaving the Bullet Club. From a story perspective it makes perfect sense because all this strife was foolish. But I'm also noticing all the brown people are effectively " kicked out" lmao. Also why they beat down Chase and Yujiro?? They been cool the whole time! Chase was an honorary Tongan haha.

I'm down for Kenny vs Tama tho. Who knows, they might have better chemistry than Kenny and Cody in-ring.

Overall, good PPV. But I'm behind on my 500 matches count by a ton so I'll prolly start the RevPro show soon.

He was also feeding off of a nuclear hot crowd, the real test is keeping this up with a more subdued Japanese audience.

Yeah Tama is staking his claim as the OG BC and as such they are firing Elite and their buddies from BC. It's a good simple story. Fale has been out of the spotlight for a while so I'm keen to see how he slots into the whole thing.

I very much expect them to grab and hold the NEVER trio titles as the first shot at The Elite first chance.

I really thought he was dead after the way he took it... I saw the struggle to lift him up and knew the chances of something going wrong just increased. It was obviously not a kayfabe struggle... just abort the move at that point guys :\

moving forward I'd like to see Tama Tonga put in the effort in this G1. He has such a great grasp of his character/mannerisms and can be a charming little dickhead heel the way some other samoan in another company should be, and he can have GOOD matches, but never anything tremendous even against S+ rank opponents.

really looking forward to the key Fale G1 matches that always way over deliver. those are some of my favorites. hopefully with the shape he's in right now he'll be able to hustle more.

You have such animus for the Bad Boy.

I have always been on the "Tama Tonga is not actually secretly great" side of things.

Even in those 2014/15 summers where everyone was clamoring for him to get a shot.

It doesn't help that his greatest accomplishment is leading a tag team where the gimmick is that they both think saying "fuck" a lot makes them cool.

I would like to be able to suggest to NJPW's new western executive to increase NJPWWorld stream to at least 720p. 540 is agonizing :\

Decided to finally give TJPW a shot, as you fuckers keep going on about it :p

I like Yuu the best so far, Itoh as well. Sakazaki was a bit botchy, but shows a lot of promise and I enjoyed Saki-sami's weird faction. Gimme some recommendations, please and thank you.
Like Jazz said the 5/3 Korakuen Hall show is amazing and worth watching in its entirety, especially the English version if you're new.

Here's my current list of recommendations for this year up till the Tokyo Princess Cup, * in front is what I consider must-see:
1/4:
*Danshoku Dino vs Maki Ito
*MiraClians (Shoko Nakajima & Yuka Sakazaki) vs Mizuki & Riho
*Miyu Yamashita vs Reika Saiki

1/7:
Hyper Misao vs Shoko Nakajima (comedy match)

2/3:
*MiraClians (Shoko Nakajima & Yuka Sakazaki) vs NEO Biishiki-gun (Azusa Christie & Sakisama)

3/3:
Nodoka-Oneesan & Yuu vs NEO Biishiki-gun (Azusa Christie & Sakisama)

3/10:
*Miyu Yamashita vs Maho Kurone

3/21:
Hyper Misao vs Yuka Sakazaki (comedy match)
NEO Biishiki-gun (Azusa Christie & Sakisama) vs Marika Kobashi & Miyu Yamashita

4/7:
Shoko Nakajima vs Maki Ito vs Nodoko Oneesan
Dragon Bombers (Maho Kurone & Rika Tatsumi) vs Hyper Misao & Priscilla Kelly
*Miyu Yamashita vs Marika Kobashi

4/8:
Shoko Nakajima vs Priscilla Kelly
Reika Saiki vs Marika Kobashi
Miyu Yamashita & Yuka Sakazaki vs Dragon Bombers (Maho Kurone & Rika Tatsumi)

4/15:
*Maho Kurone & Rika Tatsumi & Maki Ito vs Miyu Yamashita & Marika Kobashi & Reika Saiki

5/3:
*Literally every match after the first two and even those aren't bad. Hyper Misao vs Jun Kasai is the best TJPW match of the year.

5/5:
Su Yung vs Maho Kurone

5/19:
Yuka Sakazaki vs Nodoko Oneesan
*Ito Respect Army (Maki Ito & Mizuki) vs Muscle JK Strikers (Marika Kobashi & Reika Saiki)

I will admit to loling at them announcing that Juice will get DQed if he uses the cast when other matches have constant interference and weapon usage that goes completely unchecked.

tumblr_ox4i1nxIdW1qcztrfo2_400.gif

I'll never understand how Kobashi's career didn't end right here.

Legendry.

Remember Joe v Kobashi in ROH

Kobashi nailed Joe with a brutal suplex just before the clothesline finish. Dropped him right on his head.
