I've never played RE2, just Remake, 4, and currently 7 I've never heard of Mr. X, so im assuming he's only ever been in RE 2?

I only ask because they have shown a good bit of him, almost like I should know who he is.

Basically, is it a spoiler for me to see him in the trailer?

He's more of a monster than a character, Mr.X is more of a nickname. He and some of his variations have made a few appearances in the side games.

It's as ''spoilery'' as showing Jack being an enemy in 7 trailers I suppose. Perhaps even less so since REmake 2 scraps the original scenario system where Mr.X had more of an impact.

Mr. X is a Tyrant model (T-102), and one of the most reoccurring enemies in the series. He first appeared in Resident Evil 2, yes. His model also makes a cameo in RE3, and he also appears in Resident Evil Survivor, Resident Evil Umbrella and Darkside Chronicles, Resident Evil Operation Raccoon City, Resident Evil Damnation, Resident Evil Outbreak File 1 & 2, and semi-variations also appear in some of these games as well as Resident Evil: Dead Aim.

He's essentially a more 'human' form of the Tyrant from REmake as you played that one, he looks similar to the REmake Tyrant, just dressed-up and his abilities are a bit different. Outside of Zombies, Lickers, and Hunters, he'd probably be the fourth more reoccurring monster in the series, and he was essentially a prototype for Nemesis in RE3, being a reoccuring stalking force in B scenarios in RE2. Since REmake 2 doesn't have A/B scenarios, him appearing isn't much of a spoiler since he'll basically probably be a bigger stalking enemy in REmake 2 in one of/both the campaigns.

I'd love the level design of RE3make to have interconnected areas like Dark Souls 1. That way we can finally explore Racoon City. I also think it would be cool if we can start in Jill's apartment which can work similar to the Firelink Shrine.

Was everyone else as angry as I was after watching Resident Evil Apocalypse? That movie's treatment of Nemesis fucking pissed me off. If there's one Resident Evil enemy I wanted a movie to get right it's Nemesis. I didn't think the movie was that terrible but I just remember walking out so damn angry at what they'd done to Nemesis. Knowing Nemesis was in the movie had me so damn excited going in.

I had already adjusted my expectations to "stooooopid" after the first movie, so my friends and I walked out of the theatre laughing our ass off at the kung fu battle with the Nemesis.

I love Resident Evil Apocalypse. One of my favourite ''bad'' movies. Sorry mate.

Yeah, he looked the part, sounded alright not gonna complain. Then they put him in an illegible fist fight, he gets his butt whooped and starts crying. Which is no different than Bane crying, ergo they shouldn't be crying.

This series has a long history of scrapped versions, partially due to how they evaluate things and have a lot of creative freedom. For the record, REmake 2 was not scrapped, though the team did decide to rework stuff, but this is closer to what they did with RE7's final version. RE7's opening hour was scrapped and redone at one point, in a similar fashion the Raccoon City segments of REmake 2 were scrapped and redone at some point. This isn't a whole scrapping/rework, more a... Normal game development rework. The reason for RE7's and REmake 2's openings redone is a similar reason though they're very different in content, the team thinks the beginning of the game being memorable is important, and in both cases they thought they could do better than what was nearing completion, so redid it to up the quality.

OG RE2's Raccoon City section was reworked too. The trial edition only allowed to run to the RPD through the corridor that was blocked by the white van in the retail release.

RE7 was majorly redone (the original concept was a third-person game set in a fictional European water city based on Venice which featured RE6-esque combat and a water-based virus, including an increased environmental focus and water-based weapons, and crucial 'choice' moments sorta' like RE3/a TellTale game where time would slow down and you had to make a crucial choice that's affect your path through a level/the story).

I never heard this before. Outside of the 'moral choice' stuff, that sounds like it could have been a lot of fun, since I love RE6's combat. It's just that the campaigns were often poorly designed. Probably would have preferred it to what we got in 7, tbh.

REmake 2 will be an even bigger success. What do you do then?

Also RE7 didn't sell as well as the third person action games. I think first person is done.
The single-player horror title RE7 didn't sell as well as the two co-op action games that have both been out for many more years and on many more platforms? Say it isn't so!

This is also just sort of brushing aside that it's still in the top five best-selling RE games in the series. And also already sold 5+ million.

Makes you wonder how much money and free promotion they got from Sony due to the VR exclusivity.

Also makes me wonder if Sony approached them at all with VR in mind or what happened.

well if REmake 2 is going to sell even better that means Action RE is dead because REmake 2 isnt an action game even if its third person. Its closer to RE7 than RE6.

Which would be fine by me as long as the action stuff stays gone and it stays purely survival horror.

Fine by me, I want a true mix. RE2 should be that. The series has always been big on action, RE2 has tons of it, it just used to suck. There is no reason for action to suck now.

This is what I never understand. The only true survival horror that I ever felt for this series was the first game. RE2 start to become more action ( hence the comment from Hideki Kamiya who is the director of RE2 that he didn't like horror game ), then even more obvious in RE3. From that point it was basically action game with survival horror theme. So please don't pretend like old school RE never give you tons of ammo and guns before RE4. It only had more limitation due to smaller inventory spaces and the enemy don't drop ammo. I mean the mercernaries ( which has became its own game on 3DS ) was even started from RE3 ... Just because Leon cannot summer salt the enemy doesn't mean the game is not action.

Can anyone confirm or even speculate on whether or not this game will bring back The Mercenaries mode? Please?
I think the game will probably have something similar as a post completion game mode. Maybe not mercenaries, but it'll have something. RE7 had a pretty cool wave based survival mode. I could see something similar making it in here.

The main area that the horror and tension came from in RE1, 2, and 3 were the camera angles and claustrophobicness of the environments, and the game was no where near as actiony as recent titles so come off it.

Thanks for the replies guys. What is Battle Mode supposed to be exactly? Similar to Mercs?

Extreme Battle (which is what Dark_Chris is referring to with 'Battle Mode') is an extra game mode you can unlock in some versions of Resident Evil 2 that is an early version of what would later become The Mercenaries. Extreme Battle is very similar to The Mercenaries in that you start with just Leon and Claire and go through areas from the main game while killing enemies. The difference with Extreme Battle is that you have to obtain four Anti-Virus bombs that can be found in the precinct. The bombs then have to be planted around the Umbrella Train to eliminate the zombie threat on the surface. You complete the stage by entering the train. The Anti Virus Bombs are scattered around specific police station areas (found only in these locations). A bomb found in a certain place in one game may not appear again in the same area in the next game.

There are three levels of difficulty in Extreme Battle; Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3, Level 1 being the easiest and Level 3 being the hardest. Level 1 is the default level and upon completion unlocks Level 2 and Ada as a playable character. Completing Level 2 unlocks Level 3 and Chris as a playable character (yes Chris is in RE2, something I didn't even know about until a couple of months ago). Leon, Claire, Ada and Chris all have different weapons and have minor differences between them (such as health, run speed etc.).

Hopefully that covers Extreme Battle. It has many similarities to The Mercenaries game mode used in later Resident Evil games but with more objectives besides 'kill everything you see'. Personally speaking, I'd be surprised if we got the exact same Extreme Battle that the original RE2 had. I'm expecting something more similar to the modern-day Mercenaries.

Thank you for that explanation, very informative Scotia. All I play is Mercs, in fact I'm still addicted to RE5 10 years later, so if this remake has a mode similar to that then I'm game ;)

I'm not digging some of the character redesigns. Leon/Marvin are good. But they don't really stray from their old looks too much. Whilst I sort of like Claire, I was hoping for pink shorts. Hate Sherry's new uniform and Mr X's hat.

I don't mind them changing the look of the characters every time, I'm used to it, but that Leon looks even more like Leo Dicaprio than Code Veronica's Steve.

The original Mercenaries mode was in RE3 and and extreme battle in RE2 before that. They were great fun without any of the melee stuff from later games.
Didn't knew about it being in 3, was it like extreme battle mode in 2 though, because that wasn't mainly based around combat.

But yea, I guess I can see them bringing it back, but it'll probably be more like RE2 mode and not just about combat like in the newer games, since for survival horror RE games, fun combat isn't that high on the priority list.

3 was a time attack mode where you unlocked new characters, weapons and so on. You got time back for killing enemies and rescuing random people through out the city while also racing against the clock to get to the end.
