--- ORIGINAL POST ---

Playtonic have just updated their website with the first image of the upcoming "64-bit mode" update for Yooka-Laylee.

It's a work-in-progress, but should give some indication of what they're going for. What do you reckon?

I'm confused about this. It just looks like a blurry screenshot of the game...is that what they're going for?

Seems like they just scaled back some variables.
They would need to change much more than that for it to look like an N64 game.
Everything needs to be much more lowpoly, maybe change the renderer resolution down, maybe half the framerate and change the post processing.
As others said, why that bloom?

Wouldn't they basically need to re-make the entirety of the game's assets to make this work? Seems like a goal that was a little too ambitious.

No N64 game looked like that. Why even bother if they aren't going to do it right?

Aww ... that's too colorful, vibrant and detailed to be a N64 look. Not authentic at all ... I'm disappointed because I was actually excited about this feature.

Took me a minute to realise I wasn't just looking at a low-quality image of the normal game. Needs to be made much more in-line with how N64 games looked.

I agree that this looks like PS2.

Needs lower textures, blockier models and landscape, fog and low fps (but we can't judge that in a screenshot). Also, no bloom.

To be honest, I actually just thought this tonic was going to affect the player and nothing else

I was wondering why such a simple thing as an alt costume was taking so long lol

There's no way this was ever going to work without redoing the geometry of the entire game.

Uh.

They should probably release a video of this because that screen shot looks nothing like an N64 game more like an image that was edited to look blurry.

That just looks like they turned down the settings and cranked up the vaseline.

Models and textures would need to be redone completely to do this properly.

At least maybe my pc will be able to run the game :p.

Anyway, hopefully by work in progress they mean they're still remaking the assets.

Ugh. This just looks wrong. It looks like a defective game where LOD has stopped working. Playtonic continues to disappoint...

Despite not really liking Yooka-Laylee I was really looking forward to seeing this mode.

It looks terrible. As already said, it looks like a PS2 game. Nowhere near N64.

I don't get it, they have worked on N64 games, they should see this does not invoke the aestehtics of an N64 game. Definitely much closer to PS2. Shame, I would have liked a low poly N64-style second playthrough of Yooka. To me this looks like lower res textures applied to the same models.

I actually really loved Yooka Laylee, and I was looking forward to replaying the game with this filter and all the new updates that have been added since launch. But uh... this looks awful, this isn't an Nintendo 64 game, it's a blurry version of the game set to "low settings". It doesn't even look like they tried replicating a 64 game.
