So it baffles me that Netflix is so readily available on so many devices, even some rather obscure, old or dead platforms like the Wii, WiiU and Vita. The Wii isnt even capable of streaming in HD and yet it somehow has Netflix! The Switch outsold the entire lifetime sales of the Vita in like a year and yet the latter has a Netflix app while the former still, after 16 very successful months in the wild, has yet to receive this.

How come? Do we know whats behind this? I remember reading a Reggie interview basically saying "ask Netflix" but then Netflix said something like "ask Nintendo" and how they were lacking something from them to unlock something to be able to develop said app. Supposedly. Is the Switch even capable of supporting these kinds of apps? Because Im beginning to think it may not.

I would very much appreciate this app on my Switch for trips where I plan to take my console and not having to carry a laptop or a tablet to stream shit.

And while they're at it a Youtube app would also be greatly appreciated. I mean c'mon!

EDIT: I forgot Netflix is even on 3DS for fuck's sake! Nintendo has no excuse!

They say "ask Netflix" but I feel like with the absence of basically every other streaming service on the device there has to be some blame on Nintendo, honestly.

Nintendo doesn't want to pay Netflix to build/have it on their platform and Netflix doesn't want to pay Nintendo to be on their platform.

They both are doing fine on their own so they don't think they need each other. Now they are in a game of chicken.

Netflix wants Nintendo to pay them to do it, Nintendo says they can do it on their own. So no one does nothing, and we suffer as a result.

Something something only games something why do you need it just use your phone something something stop complaining something it's on everything else why have it here something

That last "point" always grinds my gears. Like yeah, it's on everything else, so why isn't it on my Switch?

It's very apparent that Nintendo doesn't want [Hulu competition] on the device.

Tinfoil hat redaction.

It's especially weird cause Hulu is on there no problem. As is that I've Japanese streaming site(though that one Nintendo at least owns a minority stake in)

Bullshit. The Nintendo Switch is competing for backpack space with iPads and tablets everywhere. They need to give us more reasons to shun the tablet in favor of a Switch. Being able to stream Netflix and/or Youtube is a great way to do just that!

Nintendo doesnt care and that's pretty lame imo.

While we're at it, we're also missing : Themes, wallpapers, web browser, YouTube, Spotify/literally any music app, Twitch, a video recording feature that works on more than a handful of games.

I blame Nintendo, im sure if they wanted it on, they pester netflix and be able to get it on quickly.
I wouldent be surprised if there is already a version of netflix that could work on switch with just a few tweaks.

Amazon is there, so it's not this, and I'm pretty sure that Netflix is available on the shield too, right?

It's clearly a case of neither parts caring. Nintendo is know for those things, why you sound so surprised?

I don't get why you all need it on another device. While it would be for sure nice, I have no urge to have it on the Switch.
Because if Im traveling I dont feel like having to pack an additional screen to stream shit so it'll be either one or the other. Nintendo is competing for our entertainment with all sorts of devices, not just Xbox and Playstation. Give me a another reason to pack a Switch and leave my iPad behind!

my assumption:
Nintendo said "ask netflix" because Nintendo doesn't care about having multimedia features on the switch right now.

Netflix said "ask nintendo" because when nintendo doesn't care about being a multimedia platform, netflix doesn't see a reason to try and craft the market on its own. and if they've moved on to "exploring the possibilities" phase of PR answers, then I guess they're at the point where they're eyeballing the userbase to see when it's worth it to start caring.

Believe it or not, people have different needs than you. My Switch is in my bedroom which is connected to a non smart TV. Also, if I'm traveling, I'd rather not carry multiple devices for different uses. Having something to play my games and watch Netflix(and Amazon Prime, HBO, Hulu, etc), all on the same device would be ideal.

Is there really a lot of people using their console to stream netflix ?
You cant be this aloof! Yes! Look, when Im home I have many ways to stream Netflix (Smart TV, PS4, PS3, Chromecast in another tv, etc) but if I'm travelling or just taking my Switch out of my house the easiest way would be on said console. People dont always feel like traveling with two screens all the time you know!

And no, streaming Netflix on my fucking phone is not an acceptable option.

Here's a theory: Up until now, on all the listed platforms, the exact audience of a Netflix app was immediately known. Nintendo didn't charge for online services, so however many Wii/WiiU/N3DS owners there were, Netflix had a pretty good idea of how many potential users it was working with.

Enter the Switch. Its online environment is an unknown quantity. Nintendo may or may not have shared details on the services arrangement with its partners, but at the end of the day it's entirely up in the air exactly how many people end up actually paying for NSO access. And Netflix wants to know how many people will actually use the services, before it commits to another Nintendo platform after the WiiU did as it did.

I wish there was a way to quantify how many users of Netflix would hypothetically use the Switch as their primary means of accessing the service.

Sure, I would like Netflix on the Switch but it would probably be like, the 4th in priority in terms of devices I would access it on.

I don't believe online subscriptions are required to access the Netflix app on consoles
