Opeth is working on a new album for 1st quarter 2019. "More energetic" than the last three. They've got like 12 songs written and are hoping for 15.

I can only hope it has some weight to it, and is a hell of a lot better than Sorceress. But it would be hard not to be.

I haven't been able to like Opeth since Watershed. I've tried every album since then and just not liked how they sounded. If the new one is more energetic, maybe I'll enjoy it who knows.

Ironically. I think Pale Communion and Heritage are great. Sorceress and Watershed are the ones I don't like. But i want metal Opeth back just as much as everyone else.

New Immortal is that good? I was a bit disappointed with the last one, but I loved At the Hearts of Winter (of course), Damned in Black and even Sons of Northern Darkness. Battles in the North is OK but I rarely listen to it, only when I'm in a particular mood. Should I bother with it then?

Looking forward to it, never preordered an album though, cannot see why I would need to unless it is some limited colored vinyl or some shit
Yeah theyve got some colored vinyl/shirt bundles up for preorder. If I didn't have so much other (equally unimportant) stuff to buy Id pu the trigger right now.

Im not really an Immortal fan, but I took to the album immediately, I was playing it in the background without really thinking about it but it kept drawing my attention which doesnt even really happen with most music i play in similar situations.

Give it a spin or two. I was nicely surprised.

So.. anyone excited for the new Disturbed album coming in 2018? I know a lot of people in the metal community don't like them but personally they're the only band from that era that I've always followed and liked

I don't really follow metal these days as much as I just listen to the metal I've always liked but I was really looking for the new Orphaned Land album and it just didn't grab me the way Mabool and OrWarrior did..

Back in the day, I loved Disturbed. Sickness and Believe both got some heavy play by me, but as they got more popular and dudes vox got strained, I fell off their bandwagon. Newer stuff has been so watered down and I've played the old stuff too much. So Disturbed, for me, is one of those band's that had a moment which has passed.

While ranting on new albums, the new Godsmack was a letdown. They fully embraced mainstream and ditched their angry roots. So I'm done with them. Still love their older material, but this new melodic direction isn't for me.

The new Immortal is nothing anyone hasn't heard before a million times, it's just another album.

Given that its been 9 years since All Shall Fall and we've also had the departure of Abbath, I think it's a small miracle we got an album this quintessentially Immortal. People weren't sure Demonaz would even be able to play guitar on this, much less sing.

It's pure Immortal and that's exactly what it should be. It harkens back to the era of their music I love most.

I like a lot of the stuff they put on that B-sides album they put out and some of their best songs in their last 2 albums were exclusive to the 'deluxe version'.
Their last 2 albums were not great as albums, but had a couple of really solid songs I like to listen to.
I wish they would mix up their song structure more than anything, tbh.

The Sickness is indeed my favorite tho. The shit Draiman was able to pull off with his voice in that album is amazing and I think overall that album is still pretty unique to this day, which is funny since it's very basic musically speaking.

BTW, any recommendations for someone who really likes Vulgar Display era of Pantera?

You won't find an equal to Pantera much less their Vulgar era. At least I haven't. I see recommended band's that are supposed to be similar but the music tends to be simpler and vocals too harsh for my liking. They had a chemistry that just hasn't been duplicated from what I can tell.

Song of the day.

Morbid Angel - Angel of Disease

Not much to say about this one other than its one of the best death metal songs of all time.

Ridiculous drumming, great solos and the song builds so well.

Enjoy.

Keep the thread swimming in OSDM.

What does everyone think about also having an Album of the Week or a Daily Album spotlight like we do for songs?

Infernal Coil announced that their debut LP comes out on September 14 on Profound Lore and released a track from it:

"Brutal, unrelenting, transcendental ashen death metal" featuring Blake Connally from Dead in the Dirt, one of the best grindcore/powerviolence bands of the last decade.

this is extremely my shit

Part 2 of Automata may be even worse than coma ecliptic (and I generally am ok with heavier bands going more prog). But this is just....why?

Hoping the new obscura album doesn't disappoint at least.

Pale Communion is mostly good, but Heritage is just some hot turd. Boring and bland. About the new album, I'm not optimistic. Akerfeldt likes to rehash 70s' prog without any creativity. If I want to listen to 70s' prog, I will listen to King Crimson, Camel, Yes, and etc, not Opeth.

I have yet to listen to it. If this is true, big ehhhh. Was thinking of going to Summer Slaughter primarily for Entheos, Allegaeon, Born of Osiris and BTBAM. Rethinking those plans since it requires traveling. I wish I caught the Colors tour last year.

You are probably the first person to get me pumped to listen to the album, never though of this, Demonaz gave us Pure Holcaust hmmm, it's the only one i care for honestly. Interesting.

If this the rest of the record is up to par with this track it will easily be one of my favourite this year. Beastly!

Holy shit. That's what happened to Blake Connally? I loved the album Dead in the Dirt put out, I blasted that for weeks, but they never put anything else out. This sounds great, can't wait for this LP.

Behemoth just had a listening party for their new album in a church somewhere. You can hear clips of it on his Instagram story (Nergal69). Sounds like all of my favorite parts of The Satanist. Really need that album/tour announcement and pre order.

I disagree fervent with this.

I think they did themselves a disservice by splitting the two parts, but together Automata might end up my 3rd favorite of theirs behind Parallax II and Great Misdirect.

PII > Misdirect > Automata > Colors > Coma > Alaska > The Silent Circus > BTBAM

I think Pale Communion is one of the best albums they've got. Watershed was great. Heritage was odd at first but the tour for that album was probably the best time I've seen them live and it grew on me since then. Sorceress wasn't too bad, and I feel like I inexplicably listened to it a ton more than I might logically place it for quality. I'm excited to hear what they do next.

Man, so much new music to listen to today. Starting off with the new Deafheaven album. So far, so good. I was pretty unfamiliar with them but I like their brand of black-ish metal. Next up will be the new Obscura, followed by Automata II and finally some new Skeletonwitch. Spotify doesn't have the whole new album it appears. Should be a hell of a Friday the 13th!

Song of the Day:

Anaal Nathrakh - Forging Towards the Sunset

This is one of their most listened songs on Spotify, and for good reason. It has plenty of the chaos, and disparate elements that makes their sound so distinct, but it is at the same time so damn catchy. The chorus alone is bordering on power metal cheese-levels, and you just can't help yourself screaming along to "FORGING TOWARDS THE SUNSET!!!".
Have a great weekend.

Such a great song. Love Anaal Nathrakh.

On another note, holy hell, how have I not heard of Rebel Wizard before? This stuff absolutely slays. Blackened traditional heavy metal at it's finest. First song I heard from them is from their upcoming album and it is incredible. Going to go back through their discography for sure.

I don't understand why people ever doubted Immortal without Abbath. Demonaz is the one that gave us Pure Holocaust riffs.

For me it was a combination of things. The biggest being I just wasn't sure he'd be able to physically play. I didn't realize he had had surgery until I read an interview within the last few weeks. Not sure if it was common knowledge before that, but I certainly had no idea.

I think at the time of the split Abbath said he was going to do a new album, as did Demonaz and Horgh. Iirc, they said they were going to do it themselves and not replace Abbath. Within like a year (I think) Abbath had dropped his album and started touring and Immortal had been pretty quiet. That was largely due to them having to write entirely new material and them just wanting to buckle down and get shit done. But at the time, I wasn't sure they were actually serious. Then they released the tracklist and I was like, "I'm pretty sure some of these song titles are reused." Side note, Mighty Ravendark is one of the best tracks on the album and maybe one of my favorite Immortal songs ever, so shows what I know.

Once they released that first single though, I realized I was being pretty foolish having doubts. It was aggressive and full of energy and purely Immortal. I feel bad for having doubts as well, since when you compare Immortal's new work with Abbath's it seems pretty clear that the soul of Immortal is with Demonaz. Abbath's record sounds like what would come after All Shall Fall, which is fine, but it's moving more away from the kind of black metal I like. This new Immortal album though, is this wonderful return to form. It captures the soul of their music so perfectly that I almost can't believe it's a new album.

So yeah, I had doubts and I feel bad for it. Those guys are clearly still extremely passionate and they made an incredible album. I hope decide to tour and I'm lucky enough to see them play.
