I love this game but I hate this game.

Feels so good when you get 2-3 blueprints through to next area.

Makes me want to throw the Switch across the room when you lose 30 cells and all your blueprints due to some random green guy jumping at you.

side note: I feel like blueprints should be permanent as you pick them up.

Just thought I'd share this nugget of info straight from the developer on Reddit moments ago. This is a response to a question about performance improvements coming to the Switch version of the game.

"Heya, we'll be pushing a small patch with fixes for the last remaining "low hanging fruit" that's to say the smaller issues that we've found since we passed certification.

This should include:

  • Music loading times that were causing some slow downs.
  • The camera losing focus during a serious frame drop issue. These are the "freezes" that are compounded by the camera going haywire. The camera will be fixed, the freezes will addressed with the next big patch, however this should make it less painful in the meantime.
  • We'll offer an option to lock the game to 30FPS in the settings.
We've already begun working on completely overhauling the graphics driver for the game. However this is a big job that involves some very technical work that impacts major structural elements of the game. Our tech lead thinks that it will take until at least November to get the patch ready, submit to certification, pass and release it to the public.

Having said that this should allow us to get to a steady 60FPS everywhere and leave enough CPU to avoid the freezes that players are seeing at the moment. We won't know exactly until we advance more on the driver, but we will keep you posted on our progress."

Man, I had an amazing build going and died in a challenge room in High Castle lol. It's so random how much damage spikes do, I hate it. Also, I feel like +, ++ and S items should have a small chance to drop even if you haven't invested thousands of cells into the forge. Would add more variability to runs early on.

Anyway, Wings of the Crow is kinda OP. I love it.

Shin kojima it's defo ok to play on switch

Not at all, man. It can jump here and there, but ultimately it depends on how much of a nitpicker you are. For me it was completely fine, and playing handheld was CLUTCH. Not to mention they're already working on a fix.

Switch is fine. The slowdown only happens when there's a ton of shit exploding or going nuts, and it's not even that bad. Feels like when shit would get real back in classic games.

Especially coming from MegaMan X collection, this is nothing lol.

Thank you! I'll get on that then.

These forge prices are fucking ridiculous. I don't like holding on to cells after a level, it's too stressful. So I barely make any progress with the forge. And I have to decide between that and other upgrades, which are all in the hundreds of cells requirements. I'm getting sick and tired of repeating the same damn levels without any meaningful permanent progression, and getting nowhere near the end. It's also too damn easy to die, and it often feels like regular enemies suddenly randomly hit for 5X their normal damage for no reason. My finger slips in a tight spot and I'm good as dead with no time to heal. This combined with the fact that I've hit a boss wall (until I grind for dozens more hours for real upgrades) is really demotivating.

Agreed. I'd never waste time on this game on my home console. It's a time waster. That's why it's great for the Switch on the train. I can bang my head on the wall for 45 minutes every morning and the same every evening and usually make some progress. It's like a very good cell phone game. I play it when I can't do anything else.

What I did is speedrun through. It's REALLY easy to just dodge everything once you get the hang of it, and getting the timed doors in every stage gives you about 100 cells by the end which you can use on the forge. You can easily pick up scrolls along the way, use gold from the timed doors to upgrade them to "+" level, and once you know how to beat the bosses they're pretty manageable as long as you have some good purple items.

It doesn't take long if you do that, and playing the game to go as fast as possible is really fun.

For anyone new to this game though, Wolf Trap + Turret. Trust me.

Can I skip the credits? It's super long (it has been playing like 10 minutes now) and I could swear the whole thing is looping over and over.

EDIT: Over now. Probably the worst credits I've ever seen; same names and roles repeated over and over.

Unfortunately, the game seems to penalize you harshly for unlocking everything.
There's getting blueprints, and there's unlocking those items. I'm only concerned with acquiring the blueprints for the items I want. There's a long list of items I have blueprints for but I refuse to actually unlock with cells for the very reason you mentioned. I don't want to fuck over my item pool with a ton of shields, grenades, and melee weapons I don't use.

For example, I don't see the point in using a root grenade over a stun grenade. The magnetic grenade seems like a fun item, but I'm not sure how useful it is against bosses. Shields just don't fit into my playstyle. And why is there an ice crossbow AND an ice bow? The ice bow seems better, right?

I think if you're running 3 boss cells and the game is still too easy, then maybe unlocking every item can add some challenge. But for me, using bad weapons isn't fun.

Dead Cells was my last try at "run-based" games. ...And I'll probably never touch a "run-based" game again (for the most part I don't, recently tried a few on game pass)

It looks great, has great atmosphere, and slick controls. But for someone that sucks at action games, lack of progression (in Nioh I'd just grind to be way over-levelled) and unable to retry bosses (I did beat Super Meat Boy and Hyper Light Drifter, thanks to instant restarts/ lenient checkpoints) means I'll never see most of the game.

Got it on Xbox so I can't even cheat engine my way through to see level/boss designs.

So far, I've been not unlocking some of the swords/shields/bows that seem not appealing to me. Is there any advantage to just unlocking everything?

Well, some things you can't unlock without unlocking a certain number of things. So, for instance if you want Gold III, then you have to unlock 10 blueprints (or something).

You don't think you'll get better with practice? The game is meant to be hard. One reason it's so great is that it requires player skill to increase over time along with grinding for more power. You aren't just filling a bar to the point where you can brute force your way further into the game.

Yea I unlocked a few weapons early on for that, but I've found if I only unlock the weapons I want, I'm still able to access the upgrades I want as well. I'll probably unlock more stuff later, but for now, I really like having a higher chance to get the frost blast and ice bow.

Can you give some tips on starting this sort of playstyle? So far I've only been inching my way through levels killing everything. With the randomness of level design, how do you find the scrolls in the level quickly enough to then find the exit in time for the doors? Also, don't some enemies drop scrolls too, so if I run past everything won't I miss those as well?

I've been trying to find a video breaking down level design or routes and haven't been successful yet.

The way I do it is I just run and dodge. You'll come across scrolls in the level as you try and find the exit. Sure you'll miss some, and yes enemies drop them, but you really only need to think about survival when doing a speedrun like this, not your damage. After a while, the ones you come across naturally will equate to good damage anyway. Not to mention you also get one (or two) behind every timed door. Prioritize leveling up tactics/purple because they'll be way more helpful when you DO get surrounded, or when you DO have to go through enemies.

You're not running it this way to beat the game (though when I finally beat it, it was what I was doing haha), you're running it to get cells and blueprints, and because it's really fun to play this way :) So don't worry about missing too much. Over time, you'll start getting better stuff as you do it, and eventually you'll be naturally fast, and you'll be finding better stuff. I prioritized upgrading the quality of my drops (you unlock that once you beat the second boss I believe), tactic items, the potion, and getting the random starting weapons.

This ended up killing the increasing feeling of repetitiveness because the challenge was no longer killing enemies, it was running past them and seeing how fast and fluid I could go through levels.

It might not be for everyone, but I love playing this way.

Thanks for the tips. I was devastated last night dying 4 feet from the final boss door last night with a rare blueprint in hand. With how rarely I get the last level and the .4% drop chance, that shield is likely gone forever. Blah

I've been running total glass cannon builds with tactics, but I just get melted later on. I'm wondering if I should go for more of a tactics/survival combo.

Edit: also any level specific tips for speed running? Do you go down any of the lower levels in th promenade for instance?

What does this even mean.

A game is a game. All games are technically time wasters.

I could play Dead Cells for 5 hours at home no problem.

Yeah, it's happened to me too :(

The only reason I upgraded survival was for the health upgrades, so I can't really speak to that. When I got to the last level (castle), I'd use tactics and dodging, I wouldn't never go head to head with those dudes. I tend to try and get a Wolf Trap and a Turret (double-cross-o-matic is a fave), use the mutation to lower the cooldown (which gets further lowered as you upgrade tactics with scrolls) and I'd just constantly be throwing both those down and using a bow to attack from a distance, or literally just running away lol. Pretty much the same way I beat the bosses, though you're able to go up close and attack from behind when they're stuck in a wolf trap.

Don't overlook brutality though. You can easily reach max damage reduction while still doing a ton of melee damage and having grenades every 5 seconds. It forced you closer but you have far more leeway thanks to not being glass.

Eh tactics can get -50% damage with amulet and either hokuto's bow or ice bow, it's fine. You should never take a hit even in the castle with a tactics build, just throw your turrets and hide

I beat him without shields last night.

Hokuto's Bow
Wolf Trap
Double-Cross-O-Matic
A fucking good melee item
DODGING.

And a LOT of scrolls put into tactics, and the mutation that reduces cooldown, and the one that increases your DPS when near a deployed item. Also, you just gotta learn how to dodge his stuff.

Yeah I've had no trouble dodging 99% of stuff so far but I can never seem to be able to consistently with HOTK

All in on bruta or tactics. If bruta double nade and a good weapon, if tactics double turret + ice bow or hokuto, preferably both.

Yeah, I need to stop choosing the wrong one just to get the higher health bonus like a sucker.

Just takes time. It's a LOT easier with the Wolf Trap as it reduces his movement by a lot, but he really only has a few attacks. You're not looking for the attack itself to dodge, you're looking for the tell right before he attacks.

It took me a good 10 times of fighting him to get it down, but once you do, it's a matter of patience. I kept dying because I'd get excited and go in for a kill, but really you just gotta let the tactics do their thing.

Can't stress enough how good Wolf Trap and a Turret are as a combo. Hokuto's Bow was what sealed the deal for me I think. Thing is just unreal. But again, gotta be patient.

I felt wolf trap isn't that useful vs hotk, double damage turret (heavy + crossbow, or crossbow + sinew or just double crossbow) works well too. He's not THAT tanky.
Heal during minion phases.

Ice blast or ice bow is very OP vs him

Really? I found it to be really useful because it DOES trap him to let you get your melee attacks in. While my melee wasn't incredibly strong (I had a gold dagger that did PRETTY good damage), it helped. It also just helped the turret do damage while I wasn't taking any.

Agreed though, heal during minion phases.

Okay I got the run down to the first boss pretty well, and you're right you do pick up a lot of scrolls along the way.

I may farm this a bit to get cells for the 3rd hp flask. I still have only bought the ice bow blueprint, any recommendations for things that go well with the tactics builds? I have the Hokuto's Bow blueprint.. Still haven't gotten the double bow turret to drop yet, though.

firebomb, crusher/cross bow o matic, hokuto´s bow or frost blast

make sure he is burning all the time, if you have hokuto´s bow keep the debuff on him, if frost blast use it with a "burning" modifier(just reforge till you get it). frost blast also makes the add phase easier

I never use shield. Im a big fan of traps or ice/flame grenades. Also when he summons enemies, I kill the ones on the top first . I found that helps me stay out of the spikes.

I had an amazing run last night, I had an accessory that made me invisible after 5 seconds of not attacking, and the next attack does 150% damage, I had the shotgun crossbow (whatever its called) and I had gold magnetic grenade and crusher. It was going SO well.
Then I was careless and got taken out by a single one of those tiny teleporting sword guys on clocktower :( I was literally able to throw down my combo and kill a huge group of enemies in like 3 seconds flat. Magnetic grenade pulls them in and sets them on fire, crusher does double damage on burning enemies.

I apparently started to be able to run

I was getting x2 damage done to me

But there was no explanation what these status effects do, I just had to guess and experiment

I'm going to assume the answer to this is whatever my preferred controller is or if I care about trophies vs achievements but is there any reason to buy this on Xbox One X over PS4 Pro or the other way around?
