Just saw a video with all the outfits, not spoiling anything, but i loved how the description of the peach bride outfit explicitly states it was custom made for Mario.

Now i can't help but imagine Mario going to a tailor and having to be measured so they can make him a pretty bride gown.

I know the title implies "globe-trotting adventure" but I am really surprised how great they captured that feeling. I'm not very far yet, but I'm pretty pleased with it. I like the Galaxy games better than 64 or Sunshine, so I was worried at first. This game is really great though. Love the reserved ambient music. The huge move set is a bit intimidating, not I'm excited to master it. I do miss the Galaxy "waggle-to-recover-botched-jump" move from Galaxy though.

Alright, so I'd been having a modest amount of fun and enjoying the game, but not really feeling the super high levels of hype it had prerelease, then I got to one level in the Desert themed Kingdom....

The pit beneath the inverted pyramid. Wow. Everything about that, from using the cap to hit the circular laser devices to clear the way, to stacking the goombas for the bonus moon, to the hidden moons elsewhere in the level, to the boss at the end was just great. Best part of the game thus far.

I'm fully onboard now.

I'm having a lot of fun. This is the Mario game I've been withing for about 10 years. Going to have to get good at movement but its been the best since Sunshine. So many moves.

My Amazon order shipped from nearby yesterday now it says "unexpected delay" :(

I haven't gotten a delay message yet but I think I'm in the same boat. I pre-ordered in June and Amazon shipped it out on Wednesday so I thought I was safe. However, Amazon transferred it to the post office this morning and according to the tracking it's just been sitting there since 5 AM. I'ts now 3:40 here and the package pickup desk closes at 5 so.. bummer :(

Ok yeah I think this version of mario is just not for me. I persisted and I'm about 6 worlds through but...I'm just not feeling it. After reading through comment on why people are loving it I've realised why I think. A lot of people are like "wow I've spend so much time in x world! I love it so much to do!"

And "I'm having so much fun in the x world looking for everything!"

See, in previous 3d Mario's, you would never spend so much time in "one level". You would have a theme but then in that theme there would be a lot of individual levels and each one extremely well designed. It helps keep things fresh and the helps the game maintain variety. I was speaking to a friend last night who loves it too and he said "you should go back to the sand kingdom and find all the moons maybe you'll have more fun" the thing is, I don't LIKE the sand kingdom. I haven't actually liked any "world" yet. I appreciate that the stages are extremely open with a lot to find, but I guess that's not what I look for in a mario game at all :/ as it stands in kind of forcing myself to continue with the game. It's extremely polished and it controls like a fucking dream and the Nintendo style and Art are here in full effect. And while I loved what they did to BOTW, I can't say I'm a fan of this "spend hours in one area looking for moons" style of mario. I guess I wanted a mario that focused purely on incredible level design and platforming.

Just finished my first session, really fun so far. After I got enough moons in the Desert Kingdom to proceed,
the game made me choose between either The Lake Kingdom or the Wood Kingdom. I assume you still get to visit the place you didn't choose, right?

Started playing at 14:30 (UK time) and could have been playing from 12:30 if I looked in the letter box (it's outside the house).

Loving it so much so far, but it quite easy at the moment.

Already made it to
New Donk City
and stopped to watch Giant Bomb play Sunshine for a couple of hours.

Only played about an hour last night, but my initial takeaway is definitely that I prefer my Mario games linear. The desert level has way too many stretches of empty area that almost feels like padding...in a bad way...in a Banjo-Tooie sort of way.

In the end I think Super Mario 3D World/Land and the Galaxy titles are going to be my preferred method of Mario.

Just finished first session. 55 moons collected and ready to move on from sand kingdom. This is gonna be up there with my favourite games of all time. It's dangerously close to edging Zelda as my GOTY but only had 4 hours with it so far. So much fun, the freedom of movement the stuff you can do with Cappy the puzzles the hidden locations, romping through prehistoric lands as a t-Rex. Holy fuck. What a game.

This game is phenomenal. I tend to prefer the more focused/linear Mario games but this one pretty much has those moments with some ambitious open-ended level design too.

Can't wait to get off of work.

PS- ResetEra is no longer blocked on my work internet. Do we have a user in our security team? ;)

Any advice before I start the game guys? :)

Have fun!

The sand kingdom has been the exception so far in terms of empty land. All the other worlds I've seen have been way more dense and interesting.

Managed to sneak about an hour of this in throughout the day so far. Gonna take me a while to work these controls into my brain. I keep trying a longjump-capthrow-dive combo to cover horizontal gaps but I'm screwing it up about 40% of the time. I'm sure it'll click in at some point. I think the Galaxy style movement is still a little too ingrained in my head.

Favorite bit so far: the noise Mario makes when he wakes up as the frog. I could listen to that on loop all day.

Played for a bit and got through about three-to-four kingdoms. I would say Sand Kingdom is a bit empty feeling like others have said, but I really like just riding the Jaxi through it, which helps a bit with traveling through it. So far, I like the game and will definitely play more later!

This is my feeling as well. I love the controls, but I think need to adjust to the "Mario Open World".

This game is already nuts. One of the first areas of the early world was layered with multiple secrets and challenges.

And Mario feels sooooo good to jump around with. The moves chain together so effortlessly, and there's so many hidden optional moves.

6 hours ago my package was still in a different state, transferred to Amazon carrier. Unless there's a glitch in tracking I won't be getting it today!

So what's the proper order? Play a world, watch an episode of Stranger Things, play a world... etc?

Have only played about an hour, but WOW. Controls BEAUTIFULLY and it encourages exploration to a wonderful degree.

Only thing I'll say is that it looks a LOT better docked than handheld. That's too bad, as I am primarily a handheld Switch user.

Oh, also, audio - both music and general sound - is SO good.

Was in at midnight last night and played until three in the morning...

Honestly I thought it was kind of a weak start, did anyone else? Wasn't a huge fan of the opening cutscene or area, and I'm not convinced I like Cappy either.

But then you get to the Cascade Kingdom and what the game wants to be becomes immediately clear. A true 'open-level' Mario, way more so than even Mario 64. And it is fun as hell.

I was glad that I went mostly blackout on media because lots of things have been a surprise to me. Most positive, some negative. I had no idea the Cascade Kingdom would come first, for example. Was sure it'd be New Donk City. I think they made a good call there - the Cascade Kingdom was a great opening level with some gorgeous effects. And I had never seen the
Lake Kingdom
at all so that blew me away - it's utterly gorgeous.

On the other hand, I also had no idea that all the cool outfits I had seen weren't power-ups but just costumes. From early PR I thought the whole game was going to be about crazy Mario power-ups (Safari Mario! Snorkel Mario!) but so far (5 kingdoms + 1st major boss beaten) it's really all about the cap and possessing things. And possessing stuff is fun, but it's pretty basic most of the time too. I also wasn't expecting motion controls in any way, and I'm not sure how I feel about that. Last night I was playing in bed (after two hours on the TV) and there was a moon I felt like I couldn't get because I was playing portably. Very strange.

I also kind of wish that they had separated the big objectives from the moon scavenger hunt. Moons are everywhere - everywhere. To the point that finding one doesn't really feel like an achievement, which is a shame. So when you reach the end of a long linear section with a major goal or beat a boss, I'd have liked if there had been a different reward - like the classic power star - to set aside that achievement as something more meaningful. Because moons in this game aren't that dissimilar from blue coins in Mario Sunshine at at times. I was really expecting each of them to follow a dedicated platforming challenge or 'level'. That's just not the case.

Looking forward to spending all weekend playing it, though.

Does anyone know exactly how the midair dive works? Sometimes it just doesn't work for me, ZL + Y in air but Mario just throws Cappy instead. I think it might've been because I wasn't high enough from the ground? I'm not sure.

Nintendo first party releases always come out on Friday (used to be Sundays), so i ALWAYS ship to work.

Speaking of. I brought the switch in to work today so i could pay a little when it arrived. It's amazing how tight the controls are.I never play handheld mode, but i did try it to see what cap throws were limited based on how i hold it, and i struggled with straight down and the 360. split joycon i have no problem at all. it's interesting and unfortunate, but as far as what i played, I've had a blast.

I've never had a problem with it before. Guess I'm gonna go Xenoblade shipped to work then.

No Mario until Monday then..

this game is absurdly good <3

Also I've been playing half handheld, half docked and I really don't mind handheld much. It's worth it for getting extra comfy.
