Thanks for that. More specifically, the guys that trigger Slugger Majima are just out of that path beside a car on the right as you move onto Schichifuku St. Also, the guys who trigger Mad Dog Majima are just outside Mach Bowl. Pretty sure the one or Millennium Tower triggers Thug Majima, although I could be wrong.
Glad you found him. Also glad that my directions were somewhat accurate, was doing all that from memory!

So... like many others I have started this series with Yakuza 0. Poured 100 hours into it completing as much as possible. I just finished Kiwami as well. I felt it was a much weaker game overall but the story was fantastic and the new characters are instant favorites. I am interested in playing more but I will be starting medical school next year so I don't think I can wait for Kiwami 2 to come out and then still play 2-6 chronologically. I wanted to see if I can get some insight from Yakuza veterans to help me decide how to tackle the rest of the series. My understanding is that Yakuza 2 is essential due to a strong story but the PS2 game does not hold up well. I have Yakuza 4 & 5 through PS+. So I suppose these are my options:

1) Emulate Yakuza 2 on PS2. Play 3, 4, 5, and 6. Go back to Kiwami 2 when that finally comes out. This is probably not realistic within a year due to serious burnout.
2) Skip 2 and 3. Watch the recap in 4. Play 4, 5, and 6. Eventually go back to Kiwami 2 when time allows. I can probably squeeze in 3 games in a year. The concern is any spoilers from skipping 2 and then going back to Kiwami 2.
3) Just wait for Kiwami 2 and play it. Read up on main events from 3-5 and skip them, then play Yakuza 6 whenever time allows. I am leaning towards this the most as it makes sense, it leaves room for any "Kiwami 3" or "remastered collection" announcements, but I am itching to play more already and I just beat Kiwami.

I guess the main concern is going back to Kiwami 2 after playing other games and how much that will spoil. I like Haruka a lot so I kind of want to see her story through as she grows up. I am sure Sega has noticed all the new fans the series has earned with 0 and Kiwami so I am sure Kiwami 2 will come out stateside eventually but people estimate a year at least? I also considered just playing Kiwami 2 with a guide but I am not sure how quickly those guides are made.. I never played a Japanese game with a guide.

Any thoughts will be greatly appreciated. Thanks everyone

Guides won't come out quick. Japanese wiki's pop up quick but that's just for completion list stuff so you will still need to look up a proper English FAQ if you want to follow the story. The story should remain the same since it looks like Kiwami 2 uses 2's cinematics as a base, so finding an English PS2 playthrough will let you follow the story. I'm also hopeful that Youtube user Salty Yen will do another playthrough on Youtube or Twitch (Sega is incredibly sensitive about story stuff being shown on Youtube around release). He translates as he plays, not as good as an official translation as his English isn't as good, but he offers some interesting insights regarding Japanese trivia in the games (such as the food you can eat, side stories, to trivia about the wrestlers that appear in the games).

Technically though 2 is loved mainly due to its main baddie. Some plot points are set into motion on this one but nothing that you can't quickly catch up from in 3 or 4 via catch up vids. If you can emulate 2 via PC (pr just play it on a PS2) that's your best bet to play it right now. The game works well via emulation and it'll let you experience the story and fights in real time, which is 100% better than watching a recap vid or lets play on Youtube. The game still plays fine today, especially via PC since load times between fights are eliminated, the controls, fighting etc. are superior to 1's in a great many ways. Lock on is way tighter, tons of heat moves were added and the fighting feels overall refined. There is a ton of stuff to unlock in terms of your character/fighting style (especially if your aiming to fight the Amon Clan).

Otherwise you could just skip to 3, 4 or 5 and just watch recaps of the other games. I'd recommend against skipping any games, just because I love them all and each have their strong points. Assuming your not looking to start 6 as soon as its released just take your time and work through each game at your own pace. Stories are 20ish hours each apart from 5 which is probably closer to 30 (focusing only on story) since its so darn big (add an extra 100 hours onto that if your going for the 100%!). However you could technically catch 2 and 3 in catch ups and then do story runs on 4 and 5 to be pretty caught up to 6 if you want to play 6 at launch.

Hope that makes sense!

On your other points:
Kiwami 2 has no English announcement yet, and with 6 coming in March I doubt it'll be released in the first half of the year. Probably the later half of the year (August maybe?) so you'll probably be waiting a while for any Kiwami 2 English release. I'm doubting we'll get any remaster announcements until at least September next year (Tokyo Game Show) since the team always announces new Yakuza stuff around this time and to a Japanese audience (so don't expect anything from E3). Also, I'm guessing any big new Yakuza announcement game wise next year will be for a brand new chapter in the series that takes place after 6, staring the new character Ichiban as they've revealed the new main character and that a new console game is coming, but that's it. Any remasters are probably fairly way down the list, so I wouldn't hold out hope for those coming any time soon!

You are really a great thread contributor, Shadowman. Appreciate it.
No prob, I just love the series! Plus talking about the series is about the only thing stopping me from restarting Kenzan or 4 at the moment while I wait for Kiwami 2 to be released in a couple of weeks. At least I'll have the demo to tide me over in a couple of days time (or blow my hype through the roof!)

I really appreciate the advice shadowman. After reading your post I realized that skipping any of these games will only lead to regret in the future. I think I will go ahead and pick up Yakuza 2 and emulate it on PC and see how I feel about it after a few hours. If I decide to stop I'll just carry on with 3-6 at my own pace and come back to Kiwami 2 when that comes around.

I had another question that I just thought of. I noticed in Kiwami that many of the sidestories felt pretty dated.. and much lower quality than the ones in 0. You could tell which sidestories were new additions and which were old.. with the old ones mostly involving being conned or jumped. How do the sidestories hold up in the other entries? Particularly 2 and 3 since those are the ones I will be looking to play in the near future.

Relique you'll never run out of Yakuza games, so just play as many as you can realistically fit in to your time schedule but you may as well play 2 if you have the time.

I just picked up Kiwami again after about a month off. I'm only up to meeting Haruka and you can really tell the game has PS2 roots. The mission has me go to a convenience store to get dog food and water and then go to donkey to get a paper plate to progress the story.

Yup. It has the atmosphere and expected storytelling of a PS2 game as well, imo. Just wait until the chapter where you have to run errands for other people's kids.

So far, I think the cut scenes have been pretty good and well ahead of the gameplay which feels more dated than the story. I wonder if they are using the same script or if they refreshed it, because the Japanese voice actors did record their lines again. Not that I would know as I don't speak Japanese. That the localization seems to be at the quality of Yakuza 0 helps a lot.

Not that I really mind about the gameplay, just thought its interesting how gameplay has progressed throughout the years.

Whenever you feel Kiwami is too dated, imagine doing whatever side story you're doing at the moment except with a fixed camera, mini loading times between streets and without quest markers.

The script is identical in cutscenes, though there's some new stuff in there (like the scene in which Majima repeatedly hits Kiryu in the face with an umbrella, and the Nishikiyama flashbacks).

Oh boy i remember those days.

A couple of times the game would leave you on your own and you'd have find the trigger point on the map to continue the story.

Fixed camera and load times between streets was easily the most frustrating part about emulating 2. It was so disorienting, resulted in me just beelining the story and not touching the side content (it can wait for K2, I reckon).

As the games continue on the side stories continue to improve as the team finds their footing. I'll be honest, I don't remember all of 2's side stories, bar a few special ones. The ones I do remember though are all very good and one especially remains a classic within the series still to this day. 3's I have fond memories of - they started to brand out and do some more complicated side stories that span across several chapters (and in some instances, across both cities). You have stuff like the Tuna fund, a Phoenix Wright styled "whodunit" mystery and trial to solve and some hilarious Akimoto side stories (but you only get the Akimoto stuff if you play the Japanese version, it was cut out of the English release). And then 4 goes ahead and starts giving the characters even more in depth side stories, then 5 gives you the "Another Drama" modes... basically the more the series went on the better this stuff gets.

I'm gonna stream the whole demo. 12h to go?
Cool, post a link here as I'll probably be still at work when the demo goes live, so I'll give it a watch.

So I just finished my first Yakuza, which was 3 as it was a Christmas gift from a friend a couple years ago. This Black Friday, I'm planning to get a PS4 Pro (since I have a 4K TV now) and am looking forward to playing 0, and 6 and Kiwami (and Kiwami 2 when it gets localized) eventually.

However...am I making a mistake if I sell my PS3 Slim to help pay for that PS4 Pro? Am I missing anything by skipping 4 and 5 now in hopes of them getting remastered for PS4 or another platform down the line?

Who knows if they are really going to get a remaster.
I wouldn't sell it.

As a relatively new fan (I played my first one 3 years ago), I actually don't think the order matters too much in the grand scheme of things. The order I played in was:

1. Yakuza 4
2. Yakuza 3
3. Yakuza 5 (stopped halfway through Saejima's segment and still have to finish it)
4. Yakuza 0
5. Yakuza Kiwami

4 is definitely a high point in the series and worked fine for me as an introduction to the world.

They should start uploading things on PSN store in 30 mins, anytime is good for the demo release, and it's almost sure it will be out in the next 4 hours. Check it out men :D

It's 1:30am right here...why I'm staying up for a f*cking demo lol...

just bought Yakuza 0 and Kiwami from the PSN sale. Really looking forward to getting into this series.

Congratulations for the good purchase and welcome to the community!

Yeah sometimes I speed it up with X, but I think some dialogue scenes go on far too long. I really love everything else about it though, so it's not ruining the game for me or anything, just wish I could play it for longer stretches without getting worn out lol.
been meaning ask how are you liking it so far, did you get used to the text dialogue? if you stopped definately try to muscle through it as it gets good. the beginning can be slow.

honestly this review is 30 minutes but it's pretty accurate. i think you'll agree with his negatives and positives.

I'm on chapter 6 now I think. I've been going really slow with it, but I've been really enjoying it. All the mini-games are so much fun, I did the dancing for the first time and that was good, but I found it hard to begin with lol.

And yeah, I remember watching Angry Joe's review of it earlier this year. I'll probably watch it again after I finish it to see what I agree with and disagree with.

Downloading the demo now. Nothing quite like the feeling of being able to play the first hour or two of Kiwami 2, then having to go back to my shitty emulated Yakuza 2 to continue the story. Lol.

Nice, will download now.

Do we know for sure it'll be a portion of the story and not just some free roaming?

I've only read that its part of chapter 2. No idea if you can do much if any of the story. Strongly doubt we get the awesome boss battle at the end of this chapter, but there is enough cool side stuff to do in the demo to keep me occupied. Can't wait to play it in a few hours :)

The demo runs great on regular PS4. I expected constant dips and screen tearing all over but it's been fairly smooth.

Combat feels quite fluid and smooth as well for being 30FPS, that's a relief. And man fighting to Outlaw's Lullaby again is the best, looks like they left it as is? Not complaining.

Awesome news. Glad to hear that it sounds like a step up from 6 performance wise.

This demo looks absolutely superb, Sotenbori is gorgeous. The combat isn't as bad as I thought it would be, it packs a punch and is fun enough. Heat actions look really nice.

So I'm getting and planning to platinum Kiwami, any missable or tips I should know? There's no concrete guide in the net I could follow.

Only possibly missable (or insanely grindy) trophies/requirements for the 100% list is the weapons and armour. You need 100 weapons and 80 pieces of armour. You get them from weapon vendors, the pawn shop, the fighting arena, lockers, choosing certain options in side stories and some mini games (gambling stuff). Its pretty easy to get enough, you just need lots of money (sell previous weapons to afford new ones) and don't pick the jokey/silly responses in side stories (which can cause you to get lesser rewards in some instances) and you should be fine.

Both Kiwami and 0 are on sale on the NA PS Storw. Felt it was nice to alert those making their way through 0 and wish to jump into Kiwami after (or vice versa)

Ah, btw if you want to change the camera settings but you can't understand Japanese:

the setting are:
視点操作(縦)for vertical setting in third person
視点操作(横)for orizzontal setting in third person
主観モード視点操作(縦)for vertical setting in first person
and 主観モード視点操作(横)for orizzontal setting in first person

you can set them on 逆 inverted or 順 normal
