Okay, so I just listened to
the Crucible Radio Podcast with News (weapons designer) and Klawdd (Subclass designer) twice and what an incredible interview. If you are salty about anything you read about it via that bullshit reddit post, you owe it to yourself to listen to this. Heck, if you care about D2 at all, you should listen to it. They go into such fascinating detail about the foundational design goals for D2 and the problems that D1 had that it's practically required listening.
One example is going from Random Rolls to Fixed Rolls. In D1, when you described guns, like Eyasluna with Luck in the Chamber, Rifled and Rangefinger, you were mostly talking about perks, not the gun itself. And that is very complicated and generates this perception (true or not) that those perks are required for the gun. And what happens when you get a random perk combo that's OP? It's impossible to balance. Take Eyasluna with Range Finder again. You can't nerf Range Finder, because that nerfs it for every other gun where it's not OP. And you can't nerf Eyasluna's range because then Range Finder becomes
required. Fixed rolls reduces the possible space so things can be tailored specifically to fill different playstyles. It also removes the anxiety of getting the gun you want to drop and then inspecting it to find Grenadier and Exhumed.
But really, you should give it a listen. They talk about so much and it's fascinating. These guys are whip crack smart and it gives me tons of hope for Destiny 2's future.
