Given the zoom in the shot, the shakiness, and the general framing, my assumption is that within the context of the movie it's video footage, not a straight up "flashback". So that may give a clue as to how they'll work this shot in, unless Bayona and co. are going a very different stylistic direction for this movie, lol.
Movie opens with a court case right? Maybe some sort of video documentation being presented in support of the animals or something?
