Even Polygon seems relatively hesitant to rake Ninja over the coals about it.

Does his attempt to protect his wife and his relationship go further than is really necessary? Probably, but people are willing to give a little leeway to someone that is trying to navigate a community as toxic and unforgiving as Twitch, all the while dealing with newfound celebrity status and wealth.
That's the sad thing about all of this. It feels like there's a real moment for growth, but it's being missed just barely.

"If I stream with a woman, all of these toxic fuckwads will make her life hell, so I just won't stream with women."

No dammit, you're so close!

So your answer is to just keep talking to him in the hopes that he changes, all while he is being shitty and putting his shitty views out there to his huge audience, further giving him more insulation because people will jump at the chance to defend him? That's a better answer than making him feel real consequences for what he says and being forced to change because he is ostracized for being shit? To me, it seems like your philosophy cares more about the person who is "ignorant" than the victims of the ignorance.

When did I ever say he shouldn't face consequences? I just said he's ignorant and should be educated so that he doesn't say ignorant shit anymore.

Educating him on why what he says is wrong, and him changing what he says because of that new knowledge literally prevents more people from becoming victims of ignorant things he says.

This doesn't mean that we shouldn't also provide consequences for his actions, we absolutely should. I think consequences can ALSO come with education.

Is that wrong?

"A Mexican man was rude to me once, I just don't associate with Mexicans now, I have a justification".

And no, I'm not discriminating daily. You don't know shit about me.

Sorry but that's a racial generalisation that wouldn't have an impact on a relationship. It's not the same as a wife not wanting her husband around other women.

You are a human, you discrimnate. I never said you discriminate unfairly but you do it. That's a generalisation that is accurate. Just a semantic point. There's nothing perjorative about it.

Ah, so gender discrimination is fine, racial discrimination is where you draw the line.

"My wife wants me to discriminate" is not a fucking excuse to discriminate. People have their own minds and are capable of making their own decisions. Not only would any theoretical wife saying this be in the wrong, the person following it would be wrong as well.

There is literally no excuse to exclude women from your work on the basis that your shitty fans may start rumours and head cannons. The dude has the whole planet tripping over themselves to suck up to him, I dont understand why the fuck some people here think actual criticism of this shitty view is the end of the world. Don't worry, dude will continue to make millions of dollars, take his shitty award from the shitty Game Awards hype show and face zero consequences for any shit he does.

If he wants to say this bullshit, he can fucking take criticism for it. No one asked him to come out and say this shit, he said it of his own free accord and now we have a bunch of clowns trying to legitimize that it's cool to exclude 50% of the planet for any inane reason.

What are you guys even defending?

No excuse, really.

Thousands upon thousands of trolls were going to be continuously messaging his family members with nasty shit about his relationship, and it's not appropriate to want to protect them from that?

I'm not here just to defend the guy - he's done plenty of other unlikable things - but I take issue with crucifying him over this.

I guess I was under the impression you did not support people going after Boogie or the people who willfully associate with them when you said this:
I don't know why Era has this die hard wish to demonize everyone who might be even relatively associated with someone who says some wack shit. Not to mention that friendships in general are more nuanced, so it's not something that's black and white.

"Best content creator" being a weakling manchild who screams at the camera & can't be seen with women while playing a popular online shoot shoot bang bang game instead of, like, someone like Mark Brown for his deep & insightful Gamer's Toolkit series or something is a big fucking joke and showcases just how big of a trash pile of a show the Game Awards continues to be, despite described intentions of wanting to shape it to be an event celebrating gaming that is to be taken seriously.

Call the police. Don't stream. Get into a relationship with someone who isn't fragile. End the relationship. Ask his girlfriend to visit a therapist. Beef up his cybersecurity. Just off the top of my head.

There are avenues he can take that do not involve discriminating against women.

https://www.resetera.com/threads/ge...about-the-content-creator-award.80739/page-17

It's the same shit we were talking about in this thread, all the same shit down to "discrimination isn't always bad". Every time it comes up, people are desperate to find ways to justify and exonerate the guy, like he has no other option in the world. I'll say the same thing here I said there: It's disappointing and disheartening, especially as a father of a great little girl who loves games, to read the lengths people will go to to clear this guy. Beyond that, I can't imagine being a woman on this forum and feeling like I have a place where I can just hang out and talk about games and offer my opinion on shit knowing that there's this huge contingent that just doesn't give a shit that this guy is to this day openly discriminating against women, and I know y'all have to put up with that constantly, and it sucks, and I wish this place could be better on that front.

It's a symptom of gaming community/press, it's a popularity contest. The nominees are selected by press and the winner by press and public vote. Keighley has made an effort of promoting inclusiveness with the show (which hardly anyone seems to care about) and isn't denying anyone opportunities. But he doesn't control the media and gaming community. The industry is also involved in the show and absolutely no one pulled away because of Ninja. Nintendo didn't take a stance, Sony didn't take a stance, Microsoft didn't take a stance. They were all fine with having Ninja nominated for an award. So don't put this just on the show. Everyone at the show were giving their silent acceptance, at audience and on stage.

I agree, Mark Brown definitely deserves recognition that he sadly doesn't get. Nor does he get enough eyeballs on his great work, because gaming community.

If you can "demonize" Boogie and educate him at the same time, why can't you for people who associate with him? If you agree he should be demonized because of his views, I don't get why you wouldn't want to do that to all vectors of those views that would enable/spread them.

Era and other progressive places are overly viscious toward him. Even if his reasoning is shitty or its a let down, and it is, he has his reasons and it's not coming from a place of hate. He wants to protect himself and his marriage. There's nothing wrong with that. You can infer whatever you want about his relationship but the thing is it's his to deal with. We are in no place to criticize. Dude is living his life and he's not mandated to do anything.

Would it be great if he was a leader in his field and elevated women by streaming with them? Absolutely.
Does his reasoning for not doing so kinda suck? Absolutely.

But I cannot hate him because it's his life to live. These are his decisions to make. This spotlight was thrust upon him for being good at what he does, no more, no less.

These purity tests are going to leave nobody happy. Humans have flaws.

Being friends with someone does not enable or spread their views on that basis alone, does it? And If so, how?

In this instance, these are people with large platforms. Geoff sent a public tweet inviting Boogie to the awards. Geoff elected to let Ninja be present to take an award and make a speech. They were recognized in an official capacity publicly, and gained legitimacy. This is a tacit endorsement of these individuals. He chose to potentially lead people to them, and in a favorable light.

Let's go back to the well of... 2 pages ago.
His wife is not jealous and didn't ask for this. It's all HIS decision and it's not even based on what she wants.

How many times will I have to repeat myself
But I cannot hate him because it's his life to live. These are his decisions to make. This spotlight was thrust upon him for being good at what he does, no more, no less.
That's your justification for discrimination? "It's his life, can't hate on that"? Shit, if that's the bar I guess anyone can do anything and ya can't say shit.
These purity tests are going to leave nobody happy. Humans have flaws.
Yes, humans have flaws. Humans also have the capability to do something about them. We don't just throw up our hands and say "Pobody's Nerfect" and everything is cool.

And also, if you consider not discriminating against women as a high bar to clear for your version of a "purity test", I can't imagine there's anyone you'd ever decry.

How do you feel companies not pulling from the show, isn't that giving acceptance? Should companies like MS, Nintendo and Sony have pulled away because they knew Ninja was nominated and present at the show (easy to guess he was winning too). They were fine sharing the stage. And they are part of the shows advisory board. I bet Keighley would have rather chosen Sony to participate than Ninja, if they just demanded it. Or even adviced against his invitation. It's bit weird to me how hard people are going after Keighley specifically and ignoring everything else that is just as relevant, makes it seem like it would be something personal.

Is there any level of demand of basic human decency that won't make people uncomfortable? Not mocking minorities is too much to ask. Not saying slurs is too much to ask. Not associating with Neo-Nazis and their allies is too much to ask. Not making products to appeal to pedophilia is too much to ask. Okay, so every one of these is a slippery slope that will lead to worse happening, but once we've settled for this stuff how far do we have left to sink?

That's all? Why are you so hard on Keighley but seemingly give them a pass. Keighley has power and pull in the industry, but console platform holders are juggernauts (as are the other publishers) and part of the show and creating it. It's a collaboration. They aren't as dependant on Keighley as Keighley is on them.

I didn't give them a pass, I said they should have spoken up and also I would have supported them pulling out. I can't fight every battle on every front. Also, from the TGA site:

The Advisory Board is not involved in the selection of award nominees or winners, and learns the results of jury voting at the same time as the general public.

If you want to go after them on here like I've gone after Geoff, you absolutely should!

Your marriage isn't in a very good place if just appearing in a stream with a woman (not even in the same physical space, I assume?) and some dumb memes/rumormongering from idiot fans with no actual proof or knowledge of any infidelity other than the appearance on said stream can shake it up so much that you stop interacting with women altogether.

No one forces him into the spotlight or to remain in it. He himself has nurtured such toxic fanbase and he should rather try to get the toxic side of it to fuck off rather than bow down to the toxic shitstains of humanity & exclude all women from his "profession".

All of this makes him very undeserving of any kind of recognition as any kind of good content creator. His content has created a fanbase so toxic that it is hostile to women. How is that worth celebrating in what aims to be a serious game award ceremony?

Keighley is a corporate shill. He pays lip service to inclusivity but when push comes to shove, he does nothing.

They could improve the situation by changing the rules. Keighley should have enough pull about the show to stop a nomination like Ninja even happening.

Like I said, I did not give them a pass, and I cannot fight every battle on every front, please read my comments. What do you want, a list of people involved that I disavow? Is this some sort of "no ethical consumption under capitalism" thing, can't shop for groceries because the store carries Nestle products? It's Keighley's show. It's his call to make who he has on it. I've chosen to focus my efforts in that direction, and I'm sorry if that is not good enough for you.

I must be explaining my position in a weird way.

Yes, Boogie is confident in his beliefs and his research. He knows what he says.

What I am saying is that his beliefs and his research is rooted in ignorance, which is why when he says wack shit, you're like "holy fuck this dude is dumb"

That's my point. He's dumb because he doesn't understand the reality.

His perception =/= the reality

I'm not arguing whether or not he knows what he's saying, I'm saying he doesn't know that what he believes in is rooted in ignorance.

Please stop babying and making excuses for bigots. After a certain point, ignorance is a choice. We're not living in the Middle Ages, the entirety of humanity's knowledge is in your pocket. Boogers doesn't live in a small village in the middle of the mountains with no contact to the outside world. Dude lives and works on the internet. It's willful ignorance at best. It's certainly contempt and hatred. And on top of the bigotry there's the other shit with the sister and the ex-wife that has nothing to do with racial issues. Boogers is a little shit. That's all. Some people are just shit and no amount of goodwill and rationalization will make them better people. In the meantime, people affected by the hate that people like him spread have to face said hate on a daily basis and listen to their supposed allies grandstanding on how enlightenment will someday reach these poor misguided bigots. Fuck that. They should be shut down, not coddled.

It's not another battle, it's this same battle. It's on the same front. And you are picking a fight with one man for some reason, rather than the whole platoon. I find it really weird. He has media to choose the nominees and public and media to choose the winner. It's not his role to pick winners. Though he was the one who had him as a presenter and the advisory board agreed to this. They're in the same boat.

Symptomatic of the entire industry.

Like it or not, it'll be years, perhaps decades at this pace, until the people famous enough to present the awards and to win the awards -be it esports, content creator, or director- are predominantly people who would be disturbed by having a fanbase that spouts off slurs and hateful language, or straight-up refusing the stream with women.

I fucking hate it and my love for the industry has diminished overall.

I don't claim to be clean though. I watched TGA.

I find the hate for Keighley overblown in this case

Yes, he did invite Ninja and gave him a prominent role in the show, and the tweet to Boogie was uncalled for, but there were also numerous examples of the show highlighting diversity. They showed off programming camps for young girls, highlighted disabled gamers in a positive manner, and gave an award to SonicFox and didn't immediately boot him off the stage when he started getting too "real" (which I can imagine a lot of bigots would've appreciated).

Was it perfect? Of course not. But I'd like to think we could at least respect the good efforts made in some respects and not just immediately call for his head because of some missteps.

Isn't the whole deal of TGA that it's the result of hard work of Keighley? The previous such award thing was canceled and he decided to start his own awards show. This is his child.

What official capacity are they in the show in, other than showing a trailer there? I'm not sure if it would be a good look if big corporations started choosing nominees, even if the cause is good. This shit needs to happen through the people who arrange this whole crapola show.

On top of all else wrong with the VGAs, there's also this. Instead of awarding and promoting creators actually creating detailed and thorough content that elevates the medium, we're left with stunted manchildren whose claim to fame is pressing buttons real good.

Yeah Keighley is the "face" of the show and it's his initiative. But it's also a collaboration with publishers (and media), they communicate with each other before and after the show. They show up on stage, they advertise on the show and provide entertainment for the show. They endorse the show. "The Game Awards advisory helps guide and advance the mission of The Game Awards." They have the clout to guide Ninja out of the building. They aren't at the mercy of Keighley, he doesn't run the industry or the media.

Just not a fan of pinning it all on one person, when so many are actually involved. Makes it seem a bit that people want someone to attack rather than looking and recognizing where the problem lies. The root of the problem isn't Keighley, he's just one man treated as a scapegoat.

Funny how the slippery slope only slides one way also.

I never see these people preoccupied with what will happen if we keep normalizing hate speech. Now there's a very slippery slope. But not for them, their skin is safe.

Word!
Although I still didn't really catch up on this whole sister and wife stuff, but even without knowing about this, there's enough proof that he's a shitbag.

Are you fucking serious? This dude is not the first or the last human being to be bothered by internet trolls. Why the fuck are you treating this grown ass man like a sensitive little snowflake that needs to hide from women for his own well being?
Yall are fucking clowning if you believe this bullshit.

There is no excuse for this shit. Stop excusing this sexist clown. And real takk, you are defending him, you are not fooling anyone.

The real truth of the matter is that Ninja should clean up his fanbase instead of placating them. But he hasn't done that because many are subscribers and his monthly income. If the situation in your chat is so dire that you can't even bring in a woman, how can you live with that? Where is your moderation staff?

He has the influence to make change. Instead of wielding his power in this lane, he turns his back on it and with that those who he could uplift.

No, this one situation doesn't define his entire existence. But if a group of people is left starving, would you ask them to instead look at all of the other good the person with the food is doing in the world, if he refuses offer them a plate?

Also, women feel slighted. You can''t tell them their feeling are wrong. We have to listen before we can help.

That's all? Why are you so hard on Keighley but seemingly give them a pass. Keighley has power and pull in the industry, but console platform holders are juggernauts (as are the other publishers) and part of the show and creating it. It's a collaboration. They aren't as dependant on Keighley as Keighley is on them.

A few posts of yours reek of trying to get certain people to admit hypocrisy as if it changes the overall situation where Ninja isn't being misogynistic. Acting like not raking Sony or Microsoft or Nintendo over the coals for Ninja's own actions as opposed to saying it's fucking bullshit that he's acting this way somehow takes away from the argument is dumb. Stop it.

This is actually a great point I didn't consider.
It's a terrible point.

Inviting someone to an industry event is not a tacit endorsement of every aspect of that person's being, and approval for all behaviour past, present and future.

It's real easy to get hyped up over a couple of tweets when your only "relationship" with a person is what you read about them on the internet. Thankfully any reasonable person will take more than that into account when judging an actual person's character.

How else do you think every single other streamer who streams with women handles this made up situation? Oh right, by not giving into toxic trolls and alt right scum bags and just doing the right thing. HE also never said it was about protecting them from harassment, thats what we call gaslighting. He said he didn't want to deal with the rumors of possible flirting.

It's a terrible point.

What are you talking about? If an organization publicly invites any high profile figure to their event, it's always understood that that person will represent the values of the organization.

It's not unreasonable at all for the public at large to view Geoff's public invitation to Boogie as an endorsement of Boogie and that Boogie's values line up with TGA's. This is how it works when you enter the public spotlight. Every action you take and every relationship you hold with other people is judged and weighed and people form opinions based on this. This is why every celebrity is surrounded by a team of PR agents to spin stories that best represent their clients.

Sure, you may think it's stupid that the public at large forms opinions based on who hangs out with who, but it's a well known phenomenon and to dismiss it as not being important in a case like Geoff and Boogie's is a refusal to acknowledge how society works and high profiled figures are judged in 2018

Even though I have stopped posting I have been reading and I saw something that shows the literal damage Ninja is doing and casts a not so nice look on it or the poster who said it.

The poster Jem (now banned) in their race to justify this a few pages back in one of their last posts when continuously shown proof Ninja's statement that he did this on his own and stated it was not his wife responded with....

...SHE DIDNT NEED TO, HE MADE THE DECISION FOR HER.

If you cannot see how what ninja is doing with this combined with things like this said in his defense is damaging and misogynistic as hell I can only cry for you.

As to "to protect from a toxic fan base" where do you think that toxicity comes from, and does not his decision reinforce and reward the toxicity?

Only way it ever changes is if streamers in his position fight those mindsets and not only does this not but it reinforces it. Where do people think systematic discrimination comes from?

Some food for thought...

This is nonsensical.

How do you reconcile both Amal Clooney and Mel Gibson being invited to the Oscars?
Did John Bailey personally welcome them with open arms on a public platform like Twitter? No.

Being present at an event is not the same as the person running the whole thing opening their arms to welcome them on a social media platform that explicitly signals to the public that the guy in charge of the event is friendly with someone like Mel Gibson.
