Hey--
Dunno if you saw the news over the last 24 hours, but Patreon's planning on changing the way it does Processing Fees.
Right now, every time you pay us, Patreon takes 5 percent of that money and we pay between 7 and 15 percent in Processing Fees. Basically, it means that we're not getting the full amount you pledge, and that's totally cool as Patreon's a business and needs to make money, too.
This week, it was announced that Patreon's planning on changing that policy so that you cover the Processing Fees. On December 18th, Patreon will take a flat 5 percent cut of our earnings and pass a 2.9 percent and $0.35 service fee on to you. (Here's the full rundown:
https://patreon.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/115005631963)
We're, of course, cool with Patreon getting paid -- we love the site, the people, and the opportunities it's given us -- but we're really not happy with the 2.9 percent and $0.35 service fee falling on your shoulders.
Yes, this setup ends with us getting a better revenue split, but we don't want to complicate things for you. A $1 pledge is now $1.38, and a $5 pledge is now $5.50. Sure, that doesn't sound like much, but we know how many of you give only what you can. We don't want you paying more than you want to pay. We'd rather cover that for you and you have the simplicity of saying $1 or $5.
So, two things:
1) We're asking Patreon to reconsider this change. We'd rather pay the fluctuating processing fee than ask our audience to do it for us.
2) If everything changes on December 18th, we'll take it into account for our annual Kinda Funny Day in January (man, it's been three years) when we announce our usual changes, new shows, and plans for the new year. We will make sure sticking around is worth it.
The sky's not falling and we're not mad at a great site that's given us everything, but we felt we had to say something.
