More than Power Moons, I wish I had a tool to tell me where purple coins were. I'm missing 3 in one kingdom and it's killing me.

In before 'buy the Bowser Amiibo'.

I love how Mario holds his arms out when you run really fast. If only you could get a Tanooki suit and fly...

I love photo mode. If only the output was better. Can you upload to SD cards if you have one? Uploading to FB degrades the quality, or else some of these images would make great phone wallpapers...

By the end of the week videos for all purple coins will probably be online and some of the earlier worlds do have text lists which will alleviate the issue for me.

Try going through the path to the lighthouse backwards.

Cool I'll give that a try

I think I kind of figured out part of the issue I have with Mario Odyssey -

836
Moons in Mario Odyssey
240
Blue Coins in Mario Sunshine

So, there are more than
3 times
as many Moons in Mario Odyssey as there are Blue Coins in Mario Sunshine.
Even accounting for instances where multiple moons are gotten at once, that means getting Moons in Mario Odyssey has less "feel" to it in terms of magnitude to getting Blue Coins in Mario Sunshine (and even getting Blue Coins in Mario Sunshine didn't feel very special).

So add me to the completed list then, at least seeing the credits anyway, and add me as well to the I'm sure many people who can't say enough good things to say about the game. I said there wasn't anything that took my breath away in this game a couple of pages ago but that ending definitely did, not sure if I'd go so far as to say it was the best ending to a game ever like Metro Gamecentral did but I'd say it's certainly up there.

150 moons collected I'm now looking forward to jumping back in on a regular basis to try at least to get the rest.

10/10 yup.

Aaaaand done!

Well, with the main story. My impression after that is that it was tons of fun, but too easy, and the way it's laid out (with just one or two main "quests" in each kingdom) makes the game feel pretty short if you don't consciously decide to stay in each kingdom longer than you're "supposed to". But of course, "beating" this game is sort of only the beginning, it feels like. Then there's EVERYTHING ELSE left to do.

And man, that post-game area... I love you, Nintendo.

Maybe only "criticism" of the game is that the post-game is... overwhelming to say the least. Only 330~ moons to go!

Just finished the main game. What a wild ride that ending was. I grinned so hard as soon as
the Sonic-level buttrock started playing. Smashing through everything as Bowser while that played was just perfect.

Time to tackle the post-game!

So more than one moon can only be gotten post game in the kingdoms, right? The kingdoms I've finished with the hints still have like 5-8 moons left

I've been very "oh, neat" on the HD rumble but getting in the water in the seaside kingdom and feeling the rumble while having earphones on and hearing the sfx made me really appreciate the atmosphere I got from that. damn

The comparison between moons and korok seeds is really starting to grate on me for some reason haha. On some level it does make sense, the two games came out fairly close together, there are similar numbers of both collectables, and they encourage exploration, true. But moons are everything in Odyssey. They're the reason you explore, platform, and puzzle solve. Korok seeds are an optional little thing that you're just supposed to grab as you go. They're a small part of the open world experience that feeds into the gameplay loop pretty well, but you're not supposed to go for all of em--they even kind of stop paying off after a while. So of course moons are in a different league, they serve two different purposes for the most part.

Yeah, as someone who paid no almost no attention to Korok seeds in BOTW (I ended up with less than 100 despite playing for around 90 hours), I am absolutely obsessed with finding moons in Odyssey. If we are going to go with a BOTW comparison, they're probably closer to shrines -- and even then shrines are not as essential to the overall gameplay loop as moons are in Odyssey.

Going through each level in postgame. Just did Tostarena. Honestly think this might be the greatest 3d Mario level of all time. Everything about it is perfect, from the visuals (totally unique take on a desert level) to the way the different discrete areas are arranged with clusters of challenges and moons, to the Jaxi system of getting around... everything about it is amazing.

I've got about 78 moons there now and let me tell you it starts getting difficult to find the last few.

One thing that bugs me about the game is that some of the moons are essentially impossible to find without a hint. The secret moon in 'The Invisible Maze' in Tostarena, for example, is something I looked for for 20 minutes and could not find, despite being in a sequence of three tiny rooms. When I got the hint it was immediately obvious, but it didn't make me feel like 'Oh, THAT was it!', it made me say, 'Wow, that was pure bullshit.'

Very few moons are like this, but it's a shame that some are.

Just before endgame spoilers.

Bowser's Castle is fucking BEAUTIFUL. Jesus christ the art design. We don't really need ridiculously powerful hardware when games look like this. Same for Breath of the Wild. They just kill it on the visuals. I'm in awe.

I really need to go back and play Galaxy/Galaxy 2 after this to compare the different Mario styles properly. My favorite parts of the game are the little mini-challenges when you go into a pipe or well or whatever. Finding that extra hidden moon in each one is so satisfying.

It's obvious that the visual design of this game came from Nintendo's artists saying 'Do we really have to do a Desert level, Water level, Lava level all over again? Can't we do something NEW?' And they took every single staple of Mario worlds and totally reinvented them in some amazing and outrageous ways. And the one that you mentioned there is one of the best. Would LOVE that style to be applied to the track based around that area in the next Mario Kart, if you get what I'm saying.

Made a vid about my thoughts! - but if you don't have 8 minutes to spare: I think it's very very very good, and feels like it's own thing over being a 64 remake.

I have yet to finish the story part but I am so anxious to get to the post-game section. Reading comments around had gotten my hype level up a notch or two. Anyone around thinking the post game content isn't that much special?

So I've decided to not move on from planet to planet than backtrack unless I'm forced to by the game and I may have to it seems. The first world has 25 moons but I can only find 19 even asking the explorer to purchase more doesn't work. Is it a must to travel back after gaining some new ability or item?? Or is it possibly to get every start on each planet in order?

Man, come on.

This Dark Souls-y kingdom is insanely cool looking, like by far my favorite visually - and it's literally just a boss?

Super disappointing tbh

400+ moons. Really enjoying the game so far. Relaxing to drop in, grab a couple of moons, and then put the game down.

I'm surprised by the lack of Sunshine or Galaxy references, to be honest. Lots of references to 64 and the original though.

You can't get all moons on the first try.

At the risk of sounding like that kid off Miiverse, I love the water effects in this game. Looks so beautiful. I don't even hate the underwater sections which is generally rare.

Chalk that up as another one of these things that Nintendo just seem to know what they're doing with.

I think that was the right decision tbh. That's not really the kind of enviroment I'd be looking forward to explore in a Mario game. But it was nice for a quick and surprising "What the hell is this!?" boss encounter.

I've got a Switch this week with Zelda and Mario.
I've started with Mario. The New York inspired world was amazing
and that festival omg!
while others were more classic Mario stuff.
Overall a great platform game so far.

This is pretty much me, everyone is saying it's the best ever post game section, even better than what they offered in all the 3d marios....even 3d land and the game properly starts when you finish it so i'm dying too see it.

The water sections keep messing me up. With everything else controlling like Mario 64, I want the swimming to work the same way, but it doesn't. :(

The game has been a joy so far. My only worry right now is the post-game taking all of my time, so many moons left behind in past levels.

I think I'm quite close to the end now, but there might be few more levels left.

A guy in NDC: "One of the greatest of all time is playing in the theatre right now!"
Ok, let´s check it out...Wow. Even after beating the game I´m still getting surprised every now and then. It feels like the end of the game is totally random, beating the game means nothing, there´s still too much content to keep playing for many more hours.

Hello there, that's my first post on Era ! That's great to finally be able to discuss with people I have read posts for quite some time. Haven't posted on a gaming board for years too and I feel quite rusty but what a better thread to start than the one about a new Mario game?

Whatever this game is really good, nowhere near as mind-blowing as BOTW though imo because it is basically Mario 64 -3 and not another big reinvention (like BOTW, Galaxy or 3D Land/World) but it's a delight to play that's for sure. I'm also more fond of 3D Mario games focusing solely on platforming but that will probably come soon enough. At this point Nintendo should create different teams for each different kinds of 3D Marios in order to release them more often. That's the kind of things I hope will become possible thanks to the fact they are now focusing on one platform.

What a game this is. I wasn't excited to get to New Donk as i'd seen it so frequently. I was wrong. It's absolutely incredible. I never want this game to end.

Finished the game a few hours ago and I definitely enjoyed it. I never really go into Mario games hoping for difficulty, so I was pretty satisfied. A lot of stuff from beginning to end made me have a grin.

I definitely will be going after the Power Moons, if only because they have better importance unlike Korok Seeds which I can't imagine collecting. Not to mention that some Power Stars have some challenges to reaching them. You have a list in Odyssey, so finding out what Power Moons have yet to be collected is less of a strain in my opinion. Besides, I can see this as the equivalent to Green Stars in Galaxy 2.

Also, I'm impressed by the Switch's battery for this game. It drains far less than playing BOTW.
