I was caught by surprise with its difficulty spike.
The termite soldier as random encounter is nasty for earlier scenario and the Hive Queen boss took me about 30+ turns.
Lost 2 of my goons and close to losing the 3rd, but managed to spark couple of techs, so all is good.
I suppose 7 heroes scenarios are much more difficult than this?

I've only played about this far before, so I'm not sure. I tried Robocquet before and it was rough, but what I've read is that the Hive Queen is comparably rough.

Are Sparks random? I remember hearing people talk about getting a few over a couple hours, but on my 3rd battle a character Sparked.

EDIT: While writing, another character Sparked the Parry ability. Is it only "main" characters that Spark infrequently?

Also, does New Game+ keep the battle rank or does it go back to 0?
Kind of a late answer, but yes, it goes back to 0.

So I want to talk about this for a couple hours now, but maintenance happened.

This game has continued the trend of me like a game but having a serious problem. Then finding out that my problem didn't really exist so I end up loving it. The only game I've played this year where I did have a serious perceived problem that hurt my experience was BOTW. I wish they would have told you that dashing breaks formation and that run count to the enemy level up. Other then that this is my second favorite SaGa game. Of course I only play Frontier 1 and 2, but 1 is one of my favorite PlayStation games. Frontier 2, not so much. Don't hate it, Don't love it. Got further in it though.

Weird question maybe, but this is something that matters to me in JRPGs. Can you change the on screen character when running around the world?

Your on screen character is your current emperor.
However, since you can always choose your emperor, I guess practically you do choose your on screen sprite.

The hive queen is actually as tough as some of the most powerful heroes early on. Also, several heroes have a way of cheesing through their level, while you have to go through the hive to get the Queen, and the fix soldiers are very annoying. But you got one of the more interesting classes for your troubles !
No, not the archer guy, he sucks .

I suppose you meant:
Moleman. I tried to recruit him to replace 1 of my goons, but seems like need to wait for generation to pass first.

I'm in a bind now. It feels like my skills and spells level progress very slowly. Might be because I've been trying my best not to fight.
I'm at 2nd emperor after Gerard (Leon - Gerard - Topaz - Agatha(current)), but my spell global level hover only around 10-12. Hp is around 200-300.
Am I still considered early game or mid? I haven't tried any of the hero scenario.

Other annoyance is just like RS3, the equipment description in this game is an absolute ass.
I'm pretty sure the def value shown is only for 1 type of damage, whereas in this game there are 4 types of physical damage (slash, blunt, pierce, projectile).
Not to mention elemental resistance (heat, cold, electric, etc.).
My characters got absolutely demolished by that Hive Queen's mace.

You are still very early in the game with those HP totals. Some tech sparking is tied to battle count so you won't even have a chance of sparking them until later with higher weapon levels.

The displayed Defense value is only for Slashing damage. The only way that I know of getting concrete infomation about equipment/items is through datamined resources like this spreadsheet or this fansite. Equipped shields add to your displayed defense, but don't actually unless the shield block animation procs in combat. Shield blocking only works when using one handed weapons too.

You tend to get forced generation skips by completing every 2-3 scenarios varying based on your battle count. RS2 isn't as strict about overgrinding/battling like RS/RS: Minstrel Song in terms of missing content, but it's still important not to grind too much early in the game before you have access to higher tier equipment. An early exception is the Cumberland succession crisis scenario. The Cumberland scenario autofails if you leave the Cumberland region at any point before completing the scenario.

There's much more about scenarios and game mechanics in this excellent FAQ/Walkthrough.

Yes! I love him. Not because he's particularly powerful, it's just that the idea of hiring him makes me smile.
Plus, I don't like the Earth magic specialist, so the mole is useful to power-level through the very slow first levels in Earth magic. If you manage to reach the 4th Earth spell early, a third of the game gets hilariously trivialized.
Honestly, if you managed to beat the hive queen, you'll be fine in most maps. Maybe try to liberate the south-west quarter of the map? The regions there are not too hard, and have interesting perks. The island north-east as well, if you find a way to reach it.
The most difficult area is more or less the south-east, roughly.

To give you a rough idea of where you are in term of power level, the maximum skill level is 50, and you're "good enough to go kill the final boss" at around 40.

Just wondering: is there a limit to generations? What triggers the final emperor/empress, and is that a point of no return where failure means game over rather than a generation skip?

I'm still early days, got sucked into other games this weekend. But I'm excited to get back to this.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe defeating 4 heroes + Ksnizzie (at the beginning) is what triggers the final generation. Up to that point I believe you can die and inherit to your heart's content.

I believe there is (was?) also a finite pool of heroes and it can be exhausted to the point of being forced into the last emperor with more than 2 heroes alive, but it's something stupid like 255 per hero.
Nothing anyone playing normally should worry about, even if you're really terrible (either as in "a terrible player" or "a terrible person that sends all their emperors die in the Luton Plains until you get the guy you want). It's only a value that's relevant for dataminers.

gah, I've been getting schooled by random trap chests. I'm enjoying it so far though, just wished the sprites had a little bit of movement (kinda like SaGa Frontier).

I really hope we get a SaGa Frontier remaster at some point with all the cut content (Fuse's story, deleted scenes etc). Don't care if I have to pay $30-40 for that one.

Some advice :

It doesn't matter much who you pick as an emperor as you inherit all the skills level from the previous one. You can get some formation from the new classes by speaking to the formation trainer in Avalon's castle as a new class emperor.

Build the Magic Research center early on and spam magic. Some of the fusion spells will make the big bosses much easier and you need level 15-25 in respective elements to unlock them and money and a generation skip. Morever the final spell of each element are really OP especially water as you can break the game with it.

Get the University early on and talk to the dean in the top right corner inside to attract more students. You have to pass a test which the answers are around the university and the game. Check your revenue too as it's a question. After you pass you can find the tactician inside which is a powerful spell casters that comes with 3 elemental proficiency.

You can recover 1 LP by drinking Anima Draught. You get one for free each generation in the stash or you by more from the witch in the Witch's cave next to Atlanticus (mermaid town). It's 10 000 each so you have to run back and forth between your castle and here to refill your cash each time.

The best waza to have early one is the sword waza Airwave. If you can spark that early on then the game will be much easier. It deals damage according to the enemy current HP so you can actually kill some of the easier heroes with it and the most annoying bosses with high HP. It will deal 2000-4000 damage on a first turn if enemies have 10 000 + HP.

The Labyrinth of memories is the extra dungeon from the mobile version. You can get the 2 bonus classes here. You can access it as soon as you can reach Atlanticus. It's right next to it. It's really easy to get the Ninja early on as she's in the sections after the low rank monsters. Moreover the fight here don't increase your battle ranks so you can try to learn some of the weapons exclusive waza here.

Be careful as you skip generations because it will add heroes extra forms after a while if you don't kill them quickly. They tend to go from 1 to as much as 4 forms if you skip too much.

Dumb question since I totally forgot how it works, how do you learn magic? I know there are spells you have to research in the University, but are there spells you learn simply by using magic, or does that only increase the level of your Magic and you have to buy/research the magic at the University?

All of the spells are unlocked there according to your level in each elements. So level up a bunch of elements and ask them to teach you magic and more will be added to their list in each room. Levels requirement vary by elements with the last spell usually requiring 25+. For fusion spells you need to have the required elements and talk to the fusion researcher in the room you want and have the money.

Ah ok, that's right. It's been a while and I'm currently waiting on the University to be built. Thanks.

Got to the second forced generation last night and got the magic institute built and all, feels good.

I find the inheritance mechanic for skills quite great, but boy do I wish there was a more streamlined way to build your characters' skill/spell setd after starting a new generation. Having to select every old skill and new spell one by one takes way more time than it should.

By the way do skills and spells have different lists? As in, can I have the maximum number of skills in a characters (I think it's 8?) AND the max number of spells at the same time? If so, cool.

They have different lists, but you generally don't want to have the max number of non-magical skills because it will prevent you from sparking more.

Got lucky enough to purchase this game thanks to some eShop credit in a contest I won, and I'm really excited and nervous. I'm a huge fan of Final Fantasy 2 on the NES/PS1 but apparently this game doesn't like it if you grind? How so? I'm kinda confused, if the game doesn't want me to keep using my skills and stats over and over to improve them. Wouldn't that mean I can't take down bosses if I go straight to them with as little encounters as possible?

The deal is that there is an internal counter that tracks your encounters (since running away counts) that scales up the enemies at regular intervals.

It's not that the game doesn't want you to fight/grind. It just doesn't want you to dwell on weak enemies.

How does the game determine when a magic level up?
I noticed I always get tech points at the end of a battle.
Does the point go to all elemental class that a character use in that particular battle? Or is it split?
Generally to increase spell level, do I use all elemental available to a character or should I just focus on 1 elemental/battle?
Does the elemental level catch up if I start training lower level against tougher enemies?
Sorry for the barrage of questions :(

I'm at the Cumberland scenario, and seem to be in a bit of a bind, and wonder if there is an alternative solution here.

I went through the "normal" route (picking Sofia when prompted to pick the heir for Harold), and got to the tunnel. I beat the Duneworm boss, but one of my warriors lost all his LP and so I was down to four party members.

At this point, if I go back to Avalon to regroup, and then come back, Toma is sitting on the throne, I cannot get into Saifreet's tower, and apparently (according to a Japanese wiki) I can't get the Holy Order as a class. Not a huge fan of this outcome.

I do have a couple earlier saves, although they are all in Cumberland. So the other option appears to be going back to a save before I completed the tunnel, go back to Avalon (after my character has perished so I can grab a fresh guy), and then come back, and follow the second route where George and Thomas are dead. Does this result in scenario completion if I follow this path through?

Are you sure you can't get the Holy Order in that case? I thought they were always there, and in your case you'd just end up in their "bad end" scenario (which still gets resolved in your favour even though it doesn't make sense time-wise).
I think simply generation jumping would reset the quest to the "bad end" version.
If you simply leave, hire some random guy, and then go back, how does Sofia's town look like? Is she there? Is she hiding?

EDIT: Not sure whether that bad situation has been fixed in the remake or if you can still permanently screw Cumberland up. In any case, the scenario where everyone is dead still ends up with both Holy Orders joining you.

The presentation of battles is somehow confusing at first; I have a hard time seing which of my characters I am giving commands to. An indicator above the active character would have been nice !

The character that turns on themselves and then raises their leg is the one you're giving an order to. If they're standing, they haven't received an order yet.

It's safe to say they are working on a remake of RS3. We don't know anything else, contents, platform, language, or release date.
We don't even know if they'll keep the same style or decide that they'd rather make it look like the FF6 mobile remake.

Apologies if this has been posted, but is there a newbie guide to this game?

For example, in Vagrant Story if you go in blind you're likely to suffer, but if you just know the basics of how weapon upgrades work, you can have a great time with the game.

I've played Saga Scarlet Grace and enjoyed it but it was incredibly long.

You should check it out, it has some explanation on basics of the game.

Also have to add this for people confused about generation mechanics: Wiki

Thanks for the reply!

With that save, I went back to Cumberland and both George and Sofia were in their places and said something relatively generic.
This was the "warning text" that I saw in the Japanese FAQ:
ゲオルグが情勢が落ち着き次第サイフリートを追うと言っているように、
ここを攻略前にカンバーランドから出ると、ゲオルグらが独自に解決したようで、
サイフリートの砦に入れなくなり、カンバーランドを支配下にできないので注意
ホーリーオーダーも仲間になりません。

In any case, I'm working through the "bad" flow now and hopefully will be able to put this behind me.

Jason Schrier has a new interview with Akitoshi Kawazu, which does touch upon SaGa Frontier, among other games in the series (obviously RS2 as well).

There is somewhat of a spoiler in the title to the article, but I doubt people care at this point, since it's a strange ending to one of the 7 characters in that game.

Some of his answers are really honest and make me lol

Schreier: Do you ever want to return to Final Fantasy? If you could make a new Final Fantasy game, what would it look like?

Kawazu: If there is ever a time when no one is around to develop Final Fantasy, then I feel like I would have no choice but to work on it. That said, it would be best if a situation like that never occurs, and it is also highly unlikely to occur. As such, there's no need to think about what it would look like.

Schreier: How do you feel about Legend of Legacy and The Alliance Alive, games that are sort of spiritual successors to the SaGa series?

Kawazu: It's easier to play games (rather than creating them), so should more games along the lines of what I'm thinking get released, all I'd have to do is play those games every day. But, that day has yet to arrive.

Also this makes me sad. We are pretty much guaranteed to never get Scarlet Grace in English if sales of RS2 is the barometer

Schreier: SaGa Scarlet Grace never made it to the West - do you plan to ever bring it here?

Kawazu: I would like to make this decision after monitoring the situation of Romancing SaGa 2 in the overseas market. Of course, I would like to if I could.
