Can any one comment on the TCL S series? Comparing the reviews to the P series it only seems slightly worse and doesn't have a wide color gamut (I have no idea what this means) I don't own any 4K consoles and don't plan on getting one any time soon, and with the costco gift card I've got I'd basically be paying $150 for this TV.

s series isn't going to really have hdr benefits and won't get as bright. from the reviews it seems like a fine tv, but it doesn't have the stuff that make the p series so popular.

Ooof at that gray uniformity. I think I'll stick with my 49x800d until oled at 55" comes in under a grand.

I had looked at the Vizio m but only one hdmi 2.0 pretty much kills it.

It does kind of stink but at the same time I only have 1 thing to plug into it right now for 4k hdr and later if I need to I will just buy a switch. Also the new apps are pretty good.

I've tried I few hdmi 2.0 switches and they all suffer from momentary blackouts. I don't think the switches are quite there yet.

I have a roku premier plus, xbox x, and ps4 pro, so even with 2 hdmi 2.0 inputs I would like 3-4. The roku is fine generally though to just use a 4K 30 input though, but if I'm gonna watch something I'm on amazon with hdr I have to switch it out or just use the tv app. Primarily the roku is a directv now box though. 4 4K inputs works fine generally though even with a PC hooked up, I just don't have hdr on 2 of the inputs which is fine. The Laptop I just run at 1440p. What's weird is the roku has green checks across the board for 4K 30 with hdr and hdcp 2.2 but I get hdcp issues on the non official hdr inputs and then the hdr drops out. Honestly seems like Sony could update the firmware and have all 4 inputs just be the same as it does all work until you run into the hdcp 2.2 check.

I hear you, Id just have to choose what I want to have hdr I guess since I think thats the only thing missing from the others. I wish the smartcast apps included directv now. If it did I wouldnt even need the roku anymore. I can however cast it off of my phone. I just prefer to do everything by remote.

Finally got it set up on Friday and I'm shocked at how good AC: Origins looks on this. I should note I'm playing on the X so that obviously has something to do with it, but this TV handles HDR really well.

Honestly guys, I am not sure what to do. I have read enough reviews, seen the ups and downs here, and I am having a hard time pulling the trigger. TV seems like it is a bit of a screen lottery, which is fine @ $600 but then again, why not just wait a little longer, save up some more and just take the next step to a better tv. I hate making bigger electronics purchases like this. Almost anything else I am okay. But my 1080 Samsung is getting close to 6yo, and I don't want to break the bank. If this could serve as a good 5 year bridge tv until tech gets much cheaper I guess I would be okay. Just not sure it is.

i don't think its really a screen lottery at all. uniformity is a weakness of this tv. its also $600. if you're agonizing this much over what is considered a budget tv...maybe you should just wait.

all of the set's ive personally seen with my own eyes (three of them) look almost identical to this poster here in terms of dark corners, flashlighting with fald off, gray uniformity:

http://www.avsforum.com/forum/166-l...rs-thread-no-price-talk-156.html#post55315624

at this point to me it is what it is.

That helps. Thanks.

I mainly struggle with the decision of whether to go budget or not at all. Sometimes it makes sense and works out and sometimes you're better waiting.

To me I think I am just not sure the next step up is worth the extra ~$300 or so. The line of delineation doesn't seem as clear as it used to be. I think I just need to look at more pics to get a better feel. I wish i had a friend with this so I can really get a feel as to whether it will bug me as it does others.

I fully understand where you're coming from. I struggled quite a bit with whether or not to pull the trigger but ended up doing it since I wanted to get a new TV for my parents living room. I can tell you this from personal experience, I have an LG B6 at my house and spent the weekend using the TCL at my parents house, and I'm not so sure I'll end up shelling out the money for an OLED next time. This TV retails for less than 1/3 than what mine was retailing for at the time and I honestly can't say I can justify spending the money I did.

I'm not going to say the image quality is the same as my OLED but it's not a 1/3 worse either... If you're willing to go through the hassle of returning it if it's not to your liking, I'd say go for it. Just my 2 cents. Word of advice though, you will have to calibrate it to your liking. After I did that, I was very happy with it. Prior to that, not so much.

I have a 2010 Samsung UN55C6500 that has served me well. However, it has light bleed and a few issues that are mildly irritating at most.

With that in mind, I decided to bring my wife to Best Buy to show her the LG B7A and TCL P605. I spent about 10 minutes going back and forth between the sets and was truly impressed with the TCL. Like others have mentioned, the blacks are impressive on the LG. However, they're not worth the extra price, IMO. I'm going to be very satisfied spending a non-budget breaking $600 on a solid set that is a big visual upgrade compared to my Samsung.

I bought the TCL over 3 weeks ago and couldn't be happier with the TV, great upgrade over the Samsung 6300 series I had before. It does have some small DSE effect on the top left corner but only noticeable on a complete black screen, not while playing a game or watching a movie. My idea was to get a budget TV as a transition while all the HDMI formats, HDR, OLED, etc are a standard and fully accesible for everybody. But as of now, Im super happy with the TV.

Ordered from Amazon on December 5 and still no movement. Support told me it will be here Thursday, they had to import it from another distribution center.

can you elaborate on the differences you noticed most between the 6300 and the tcl? in particular, can you compare the contrast/brightness and the difference that the tcl's hdr makes?

A friend bought a 65" TCL 4k with HDR and quite frankly, maybe it's just a bad TV, but the black levels were absolute shit and some weird yellow coloring or light bleed on all 4 corners especially visible on white screens and HDR didn't do anything for me at all.

Is the 55" that much better?

that's the s series, it's completely different. it doesn't even have hdr benefits.

I here where your coming from. I thought a 4k tv was outside my budget until I saw the thread about this tv at the old place. I much like you, did a bunch of research, reads all of the reviews I could find, calibration guides, comparison charts, everything. I finally decided to bite the bullet and buy the tv from best buy. When it arrived I was super excited got it all set up and started firing up games. Everything looked incredible until I started to play the witness. I noticed dark blotches in the corners and grey streaks throughout the center. The witness has large areas of similar colors and a relatively slow pace that really brought the dirty screen effect to my attention. I was distraught. 85% of the time the t.v. looked incredible but with certain games it just looked like garbage.

Eventually my friend helped convince me to exchange it, I was worried that I would get another shitty screen and was contemplating just sticking with what I had because what if the other screen is worse. So a week later best buy delivers another tv at no additional cost to me and it's much better. I still have dark corners and every so often there's a video that will look a little rough but the upgrade is 100% worth it in my opinion. I upgraded from a 1080p plasma in case you were curious.

Also just wanted to add that the built in roku is low key one of the best part of the tv for me. Its so nice being able to fire up netflix or youtube without having to use my ps4.

What do you mean it doesn't have hdr benefits? It's an hdr tv. We had it set up so when hdr content was available it would notify on screen

The S series is "technically" hdr capable. But just barely.

It's in no way comparable to what HDR looks like on a Vizio P or M series for example

it supports hdr but doesn't have a wide color gamut or get any brighter than sdr. plus it doesn't have local dimming. you can't really get into the hdr game at the price of the s-series.

Yeah, that definitely hasn't been my personal experience. Not sure if, as the other poster stated above, it's part of the S series. I have the TCL 55p605 and the black levels are really good. I also don't see anything around the edges.

The S series has HDR as well but apparently it's not the same according to various articles I've read. Very subpar according to Rtings.

Yep mine has been holiday themed for the past few days. Didn't do anything it just auto switched from a the twin peaks theme I was using.

You guys have featured themes enabled. You can turn it off using settings, themes, custom settings.

I personally like it but I can see how it might be annoying.

Anybody got any tips for installing bias lighting on this TV? I haven't really done it before. I've seen some pictures where they put it right on the edge of the tv and some where they put it around the middle.

What do people identify as TVs "in this range" from other manufacturers? Even if they are more expensive, for example. What's the sony midrange equivalent?

I recently used the Ikea led strips along the edge lip on the TV and the strips fit like they were made for it.

Any way to get a TCL in the UK? Or any good cheap alternatives with good specs?

You'll be using a TV for a very very long time, probably longer than your current gen console, it is just better to be future proof (at least for a couple years).

This TV is the real deal and is apparently selling like hotcakes. A budget TV performing as well as a mid range set while having the lowest input lag of every 4K HDR tv. It's the perfect X/PS Pro TV.

Yeah I'm the only issues I have is the motion lower refresh rate and it's not the best at handling lower resolutions. 4k content and all HDR content looks gorgeous though. Horizon looked incredible even on a regular ps4

I'm 6'3 and was able to bring it from the car inside. Only problem was getting it into the car. I'm driving a small sedan and had to take it out of the box.

yeah i have a 4 door accord and i don't think it's going to fit in there. i can borrow someone's care but it's going to be a pain in the ass if i need to exchange it.
