Got 83 on the jump rope thing twice, but I can't for the life of me get 100. I always end up pressing either a little too early before he lands, or a little too hard and jump too high.

I haven't found the scooter to be much easier because it moves when you jump and it's much longer than Mario, making the jump rope hit it easier..

It's really weird when they talk the Nintendo gibberish.

I guess it fits how uniform and 'off' they look, but I would have preferred them to be fully voice acted. The New Donk NPCs don't have that much dialogue, and the game is one of Nintendo's flagship releases; so it shouldn't be a question of cost.

530 stars. I thought I was going to put this game down and let it just "be in the rotation" sooner than this. I like the idea of having Mario to come back to as a palette cleanser though :(. Haven't started the
extra moon worlds yet though

My second post on the site! So let me waste it by stating the obvious: this game is a MASTERPIECE. Currently working on the post-game content and I see myself playing this for 30 more hours.

This and Breath of the Wild on the same year is like, WOAH.

Ok, entering the

in the Luncheon Kingdom was incredible. Just....wow. I even knew about this before the game launched and it still blew me away.

About to finish the Luncheon Kingdom. Can't wait to see what's next.

Finished with Wooded Kingdom for now. That place gave me light vibes of Nier Automata's Abandoned Factory. The boss also reminded me of Nier. I found less moons here than in the Sand Kingdom. Kinda bugs me. Well i can always return. Next stop Lake Kingdom.

Good to know the reverse jinx theory from the old site has made its way over here. 145 on my next attempt. Whew!

Don't mind me. Just gonna take a quick lunch break on the rooftop.

New Donk City still feels weird. Not a bad type of weird though. It's actually hilarious to me that realistic humans seem every bit as odd of a species for Mario to encounter as talking forks and skeletons do.

That was a highlight for me as well. It's a small but excellent piece of fanservice and foreshadowing.

I really dont mean this as humble brag, but I've got to go back to that jump rope challenge and see what the fuss is about. My very first attempt was 117. But i want to understand all the complaints on it, and see if maybe i just got crazy lucky?

Thought it was weird they gave me 2 moons!

I decided to import the Red Joy-Con's from Japan since the only way to get them in the US is with the Super Mario Switch bundle, and boy am I glad I imported. These are the first joy-cons I've purchased since the system came out and the colors are perfect... so much nicer than the neon set.

I also picked up the Super Mario Odyssey case, but not sure I am going to use it...

Deep Woods is legit the creepiest thing I've seen in a Mario game since the Galaxy giant jellyfish or the hell valley trees. I saw a preview of this area a while ago and the
T-Rex was asleep and capturable so it really made me jump when it started running towards me out of nowhere.

Darker side is so annoying. It's like ten minutes long, and it culminates with their shitty "I dunno lol guess" controls on rotating 2D mario planes with barrels? dhfjdhflsdjfhlsdjfhuenewufndinfsin. I'm so tired of doing the five minutes of snore every single attempt.

Okay, a little story: this friend of mine just told me that Mario's animation whenever he gets a Moon is a combination of his animation in 64 + Sunshine + Galaxy.

When he told me that I was at the 8th/9th(?) kingdom

Snow, and I had JUST gotten a Moon in one of the rooms from the Yeti place, so I jokingly said "In the next 10 seconds when I get another Moon I'll try to notice that". So I got teleported back to the hub area, decided to go up a pole, BAM get another Moon. Told him "I literally got a Moon in 10 seconds, it was so quick I phased out and forgot to pay attention to the animation, but don't worry, 10 more seconds and...." So I literally turn the corner and throw my hat at some snow and BAM another Moon. This time I payed attention to the animation but couldn't really tell. Jumped down, bought the world's costume, went up again and got another Moon

So my point is, the Moons are REALLY given away for absolutely nothing. It's almost Korok Seeds level, if not worse.

Yoshi's house accessible by the painting was such a cool nostalgia trip. Just wish that was one of the places you had to feed Yoshi

So my amiibo three pack showed up today, I had no idea you could spam the heart and invicibility... this can totally trivialize some end game difficulty.

Man, i think i get most of the moons in one kingdom, then only realize i got half of them. I guess i gotta save up on them coins and bank on Toad helping me find them.

Reached the credits and picked up 100 more moons after; I'm still loving this game. I don't think there is any chance I get them all, but it has been fun going back to the various kingdoms and seeking out some of the harder to reach moons. For those who have beaten it, make sure you
talk to toadette multiple times in the castle. I think I had to talk to her 20+ times to get all my achievement moons.

About to leave New Donk City, and I really warmed-up to Odyssey, it's my favorite world so far and I'm starting to see the brilliance of it. The platforming is starting to get interesting. I'm spending so much time with photo mode, you can make some really cool shots.
Can't wait to continue the journey.

Is there a reason why the 2nd and 3rd Goombette don't appear in my game? Should I restart the whole game maybe?

Just about to leave New Donk with 206 moons. Does that sound like a reasonable amount of moons by that point ?

I think I'm coming to agree with the criticism that the game is over saturated with moons. I think I get the design intent; whenever you ask someone what their favorite part of Mario 64 is, they'll usually say something about exploration. I guess having moons everywhere was the developer's way of legitimizing that notion, of rewarding players for doing what they love. I appreciate that to an extent, but at the end of the day, does turning a corner really deserve the exact same reward as completing a difficult platforming challenge? I don't think so.

The way Banjo-Kazooie handled this dilemma was having a bunch of different collectibles, some of which had a unique purpose. It encouraged exploration while not undermining the value of the Jiggies. Here, other than the purple coins, all the game rewards you with are moons. Diversifying the amount of collectibles would have done a lot of good for this game imo, of establishing different 'tiers' of collectible.

I don't think that having more kinds of collectibles is the answer here honestly, there's already 3 kinds, wouldn't want to go into DK64 territory. But yeah, they went a bit overboard with the moons, most are clever and fun, but I could have done without ones like the 100x rope jump, it's annoying and takes me back to Canary Mary from Banjo-Tooie. They should have just removed some of the moons, there would have still been plenty.

Even with assist mode, sometimes it's frustrating. I had my parents play in co-op mode, and most of the time, my dad would have the camera looking down at the floor half the time. Still pleasantly surprised that they managed to beat the golden chain chomp at the top though, after about an hour.

I'm not getting the moon complaints people are making in here. I finished the game with around 260 moons and I felt that they were spaced out enough for me to not feel like I was just stumbling into them. More often than not those spots that I'd think contained a moon actually contained coins or something. Perhaps I just like exploring and collecting stuff though.

You can also tap Amiibos and they will mark a moon on your map after 5 minutes. You can send three of them out at once, after they return you can send them out again without any kind of cooldown. I never payed that greedy Toad a coin.

I saw a lot of people on here that didn't even beat the game with as many moons lol, so you're definitely good. I finished with 360 moons and it was more than enough. You can always come back after beating the game anyway.

I finished the main story and did some post-game. I have I think 397 moons. I guess I liked it, but didn't love it. About what I expected since I generally prefer my Mario games (and platformers in general for that matter) to be linear. Here are some random thoughts:

Good
-The moveset is incredible and fun to play with.
-The platforming levels (largely outside the main hubs) are really great. There are some fun platforming challenges in the open areas too.
-Cool transitions from 3D to 2D.
-Possessions that allow for unique platforming like the woodpecker-esque bird.
-The fact that the story revolves around Bowser stealing stuff for the wedding. Also I just love the piranha plant bouquet.
-The atmosphere in the Cap Kingdom is really cool. Some other really great kingdom themes too. I was a little concerned about some of the more realistic aesthetics in this game before playing it, but it didn't really bother me much in practice. I like the variety of locales and how some feel unique compared to usual Mario stuff.
-
The festival was wonderful. The music, the DK throwback, etc. Just awesome.
-
The final boss fight was okay, but the section where you possessed Bowser was surprising and incredible.
-
The Mushroom Kingdom/Peach's Castle level is really cool. Stuff like looking up at the sun in the castle is just a really neat touch.
-Lots of cool fan service stuff with all the outfits and so on.

Meh to Bad Stuff
-More focused on exploration/secret-finding than challenging platforming.
-Overall a bit too easy on the main storyline (haven't done all the post game stuff).
-Some of these moons just aren't fun or rewarding to get. You just sort of get them. And it isn't just me wanting more platforming ones, even just by exploration/secret moon standards, some of these just aren't any good.
-Too much dead space in some of the kingdoms.
-I don't like how they handled the motion controls. I'm not against them in general, but given the Switch's hybrid nature having some of these moves mapped to them seems like a bad call because they just don't work in handheld form. Given that so many actions have two buttons dedicated to them, I'm not sure why they didn't just use some of them either. A bit of a headscratcher.
-Wasn't crazy about the Broodal designs, but that is kind of minor.

I had a lot of fun with this and am going to continue to go after more moons. Not sure I will go for all of them as I said, some of these just aren't that fun for me to get. I'm hoping the extra kingdoms you unlock are cool as I haven't explored them yet.

Beat the game and have started a decent chunk of the postgame. It's definitely an excellent game, but I'd agree that there are wayyyyyyy too many moons to the point that they barely feel significant. I also find myself really missing the more focused platforming challenges of the Galaxy games and 3D World--there've been a few of those challenge rooms that almost scratched that itch, but I don't know, they've largely felt more basic and less creative than much of the zany shit that Galaxy and 3D World threw at me practically nonstop.

The capture mechanic, though, was a ton of fun and by far the standout of the game for me. I wish they had leaned into its weirdness a little more in some regards--there were a couple of capturable objects in the Metro Kingdom which would've been HILARIOUS to have actually been able to control, namely the
taxi cab and the regular-ass human being, which respectively were just used as a teleport to a sub-area and an RC car minigame. Let me drive around New Donk City as a mustached taxi, dammit!

I also loved how diverse the different kingdoms were--my non-spoilery favorites were the Wooded, Lost, and Luncheon Kingdoms. I think Nintendo did a great job of making the game feel like a globe-trotting adventure with all sorts of exotic locales. Some of the maps were a bit smaller and more cramped than I would've expected--Fossil Falls, for example, feels like a mediocre 3D World map without much to explore off the beaten path. Same thing with Lake Lamode and Shiveria, among a few others. I don't think those kingdoms had enough environmental variety to justify the amount of moons in them. On the other hand, maps like New Donk City made great use of verticality in a comparatively small map to hide all sorts of secrets, so I felt like that one worked better.

Overall, Odyssey hasn't dethroned the Galaxy games as the best Mario experiences for me, but it's still a top-tier game, and at the very least the best of the exploratory 3D Marios. I'm excited to see what the rest of the postgame has in store.

Just finished the Festival in New Donk City. That was cool.

Do the later worlds have more traditional platforming? Or is the rest of the game more exploration and secret finding? Aside from a few small instances, it's been a cakewalk so far.
