As someone who likes Defenders and Painkiller......this sounds like those? Huh. Neat.

If it was played by any other band I wouldn't give a fuck but you feed it through the Painkiller sound and I'm like "heeeey alright!"

Alright, finally made it through this year's songs of the day. I'm caught up. All good stuff. New Summoning is good, mellow in a lot of ways but I liked it.

I really like Summoning's new album (With Doom We Came), it's similar in style to Old Mornings Dawn and that is also kind of disappointing to me. Although I like it I wanted an album more like Minas Morgul, I didn't really want a new album to follow their previous one in similar style so soon.

Song of the day

First of, sorry for the late song of the day entry but I didn't have a chance to post until now.

Anyways, todays song is Broken Mirror by Trees of Eternity. It's slow, heavy and melancholic, but also beautiful.

Trees of Eternity was a side project by Juha Raivio from Swallow the Sun and features Aleah Starbridge on vocals. They only released a demo called Black Ocean and one full length album, Hour of the Nightingale, before Aleah sadly succumbed to cancer.

My wife is listening to the Summoning and says "it's more Summoning".

She's a firm believer that Dol Guldur is their best album.

Today is the 15 year anniversary of Children of Bodom - Hate Crew Deathroll, and of me playing air-guitar to the keyboard parts.
Spotify-link

Truly the best album they have ever made, yes, even better than "Follow the Reaper".
They haven't made a better album since then, but we'll always have Paris and Needled 24/7.

Songwise I prefer Hatebreeder but Hate Crew Deathroll really did difine they're sound.

I really don't listen CoB nowadays but I still have massive respect for them and how they influenced my taste of music as a kid.

Triple corpse hammerfall is still maybe my all time favorite CoB song.

The first two CoB were good. Solid guitarwork all around. The 3rd one is listenable but mediocre. Can't stand anything else they've done.

And now I feel old.

Song of the Day
I'm late but my excuse was watching Wolverine and daughter tear shit up in Logan. Sorry... For today I've elected to go with a tune off Darkthrone's Soulside Journey. We've got some big words here, Iconoclasm Sweeps Cappadocia, but shoving that aside the music is what draws me in to this one. Very early on there is a bass run that sounds like an early Maiden piece and then the song goes complete ape shit before settling off into a slow groove. This tune winds back and forth between groove and brutal assault. If you've never heard this give it a whirl.

New Summoning album is alright not bad I like it but extremely "you get exactly what you would expect"

On the topic of CoB. I still like their stuff but their early albums were definitely the best. Pretty big influence on my musical taste and part in getting me into melodeath

Like for many others, CoB was my gateway to melodeath. I think I was 12 or something when I started listening to them.

I like the first four albums plus Tokyo Warhearts. Hate Crew Deathroll was definitely a shift in their sound but I still enjoyed it.

They're ok. I liked Follow The Reaper when I first started out with Death Metal, but every time I go back to it....fuck it's boring. Formulaic beyond belief.

The Lost in Vegas guys did a Danzig tune and reminded me that I own Danzig cd's lol. Fired up Lucifuge for the first time in probably a decade. Forgot how much I loved this album.

Edit: How the God's Kill is still decent but holy shit I forgot how bad Danzig 4 was.

First two albums are amazing. How the Gods Kill is alright, but was ultimately forgettable.

ALSO:

Decapitated maintained their innocence throughout the legal proceedings with their lawyer Steven Graham noting "the original officer who took the complaint from the accuser stated, 'I do not have probable cause that a rape occurred.'" Graham also stated "The accuser has a documented history of providing false information to the police dating back to 2014."

I think I remember a few people in this thread (back at the old place) claiming they would never listen to Decapitated again when they were arrested.

Anyone care to revisit their thoughts on this?

Seems to me like they have been treated pretty harshly by the police and by the metal community.

Song of the Day

Ultra Silvam - Crooked Horned Prophet

First song on their self-titled demo and one of my favorite releases of 2017. I couldn't find a video of just this one song, so enjoy the whole demo!

It's crossover monday y'all
The best

Tam still sounds fucking killer too, apparently they did a one off reunion show (not sure if there's any videos). Wish they'd do more

Check out the guitarist's new band Warwound. Has Rat from the Varukers on vocals. Their album has a cover of The Closing Irony with Tam and Rat sharing vocal duties. Rules

Saw my favorite black metal band this weekend, Arizmenda, along with the rest of the BTC. Such a great show.
anyone who says Arizmenda is their favorite black metal band is a gentleman and a scholar in my book. I came down from San Jose to catch the BTC show two years ago, got the home dub version of the Beneath This Reality of Flesh MC. It was a real pleasure to get the latest one for Christmas that same year too, on CD no less. Stillbirth will probably always be my favorite Arizmenda but the latest two have grown on me to the point that they might be 2 and 3. There is no other band like Arizmenda.

They just get better with each release. Every time I've see them live they have the best energy among the BTC. So chaotic and raw, especially the lead singer. My personal favorite is still Within the Vacuum of Infinity, but Stillbirth is very close behind.

they were definitely amazing live, but the smoke machine guy kinda went overboard lol. BHL really surprised me live. The guy's vocals are the closest thing to a rabid fucking dog I have ever heard from a human being. Word is they're putting out an LP finally, can't wait for that. But I also hope to hear more from Axeman, Volahn, and Dolorvotre.

Sorry for not really answering your question, but I always really liked better the EP, Sounds of Decay (by Katatonia too of course, imo the best material they have), with Akerfeldt's vocals. Renkse's vocals in this album are a bit too clumsy for me. He got better after that.

The new Summoning is extremely good and i am glad they continue to put out quality music. I get the ''its more of Old Morning's Dawn'' but that was probably their best album so no complaints from me. I also love how you can hear how their synthesizers and other technology gets better on every album.

Akerfeldt did vocals on Brave Murder Day. He also did growls on Sounds of Decay.

Buf Renkse did the clean vocals, for the first time in the band if I'm not mistaken, and he was not very good then. He got a lot better in later albums.

I prefer the sound and growl focus on Sounds of Decay by far.

edit: Well I'm listening to BMD right now and I thought I remembered a lot more clean vocals than it has. Yeah I still prefer the EP (that is also in the remastered edition of BMD as bonus tracks it seems). While the style is pretty much the same, I think the songs are better overall, as is the production.

Late to the CoB talk but they always managed to project a sense of intense energy in alot of their early work. Like Needled 24/7 :)

On a different note, seeing clean vocals being mentioned got me thinking about Roy Khan. I wish he'd join a band again. Kamelot's album The Black Halo is, in my opinion, power metal perfection.

Sivyj Yar - Distant Haze was Rising

Russians really know their atmospheric black metal. Sivyj Yar's last 2 albums are phenomenal stuff.

I know it's been repeated over and over but With Doom We Come is so honking good.

The standouts for me are Tar-Calion and ESPECIALLY Mirklands.

Eyehategod finally made it into Canada and put on an awesome show last night with Corrosion of Conformity. Here's a classic:

Anyone listening to Tamerlan Empire (Australia, Symphonic BM)?

https://metalhellrecords.bandcamp.com/album/age-of-ascendancy

26348-l.jpg

Tamerlan Empire is symphonic BM that incorporates middle eastern melodies and instruments, which isn't really a novel concept, but they do it really, really well. This is the best middle eastern metal I've heard since Orphaned Land's ORwarrioR and before that Melechesh's Sphynx, on top of them being one of the more exciting new symphonic BM bands out there.

Great month for Symphonic BM with this and Zel Agganor (Bal-Sagoth fans need to check them out if you haven't already).
