It sounds like McDaniels was on the fence to begin with, and the Pats didn't start talking to him until after the Superbowl, and he must have heard some things that were enough to convince him to stay.

Its a real crappy situation for Indy and other coaches who could have potentially got the position but ended up signing elsewhere (kris richard). I'm not sure I really can blame the guy for having a heart change though. Technically he never did sign a contract and nothing is final until its final. Good luck to him getting another HC offer though after pulling something like that.

McDaniels should announce on Twitter that he was never really going to the Colts, it was a Tide commercial

From Reiss' article, it doesn't seem like he's interested in ever leaving the New England area again. Even if that means he stays an offensive coordinator for years to come. Didn't like the effect it had on his family when he went to Denver and St. Louis.

But still... don't accept the job and disturb the lives of your would-have-been assistants in the first damn place.

Does Nick Foles get a Gold Jacket for ending Belichick's career in New England?

The Colts are keeping all the coordinators that McDaniels hired. So whoever ends up as the head coach doesn't even get their own staff.

McDaniels was sitting in Indy hiring assistants and then decided to bail with a phone call from Kraft.

I would love to know if McDaniels was in contact with his assistants throughout the weeks and what kind of conversations they were having. No one actuall knows what was exactly talked about between him and his future staff. It seems kind of silly that people would have already started the moving process before anything was official. It would be incredibly crappy if he was like "go ahead and start the moving process, ill see you in a few weeks".

1) it is such a lazy take to say that no team will ever want to touch Josh McDaniels again. If a team needs a coach and if Josh is willing to go elsewhere then a team will give him an interview. This isn't some joe shmo. Josh McDaniels was the hottest coaching prospect on the market due to his success in New England. It's a bad look, but teams aren't going to ignore him just because he left the colts at the alter. His resume with the Patriots is too good for that.

2) but none of that matters. Josh McDaniels will be the next head coach of the New England Patriots after Belichick. It is all but confirmed. He does not leave a potential job without having some sort of assurance that he is the next guy.

Are you forgetting that McDaniels was already a HC once and it was a disaster. That combined with this makes him untouchable to any FO that isn't the Patriots. And I have no idea why anyone would want to be the next Patriots HC

To be fair, I think Brady can make anyone look like the hottest next future coach of a franchise. Don't get me wrong, he is good at being an OC, but lets not pretend like Brady isn't a huge part of his success.

I'm hearing rumors of Belichick to the Colts.

Exactly. You never want to be the guy following a legend, you want to be the guy who followed the guy who followed a legend

Give it a couple of years and everyone will forget. Like Sanjuro said, it's not like he revealed genuine character issues like kneeling during the anthem.

Fucking hell, this is such a mess. Yet more proof that you can never trust a Patriot.

I am well aware of Josh's time in Denver. If teams were so concerned about that then why are they interviewing him now? If a team thinks they have a shot at getting McDaniels in the future they're going to give him an interview.

But again that doesn't matter. He will be the next head coach in New England.

There is absolutely something more to this story than simply Kraft offering McDaniels more money.

There is no possible way some shit didn't go down in Indy.

Because they thought he might have learned something in the time since.

He clearly hasn't.

He was young and there's a chance he's matured and changed his ways. Now FOs everywhere will see he hasn't
Exactly. You never want to be the guy following a legend, you want to be the guy who followed the guy who followed a legend
There's that, and also with the prospect of BB, Brady, and Gronk all retiring in the next few years, the rest of the Pats roster is a mess. So you're following a legend with nothing to work with

They prob offer McDaniels the Pats HC job in 2020, when Belichick runs with Trump.

Not that it will matter since I strongly believe he will take over in NE, but if McDaniels ever gets a job with another team in the next 2-3 years I will never let any of you with your lazy takes hear the end of it.

I'm glad I have tomorrow off, time to crack some beers and soak away the pain...

I wasn't even big on McDaniels but then I came around to it after I saw what he was doing for Brady at 40.

Colts are a dumpster fire. Absolutely no respect.
