The game won't be for everyone. With the Metal Gear name attached (and all the politics that happened) it's going to be criticized heavily. I get it.
I'm not here for politics, though. I'm here to talk about a game that I, myself, find pretty damn fun so I disagree with everything Kotaku said.
You start slow. You have 1 area near your base where sheep will eventually redrawn. That's your source of food, and water. It might be dirty water and raw meat but you take what you can.
Eventually, you'll have your campfire which can purify those things for you and let you gain more points towards hunger/thirst.
So now I have clean food/water. I'll venture out and discover new areas. Or I'll come across a place that has more animals to hunt. Ok, so now I have 2-3 places I can gather food and keep a bigger supply with me.
I'm configuring my base now and I see I can now grow vegetables as well as keep a water tank. Granted, these give you a certain amount after a certain amount of time. It may not be the best form of gaining food/water but it's a guarantee.
Slowly but surely, you'll find ways to help make the ticking down of your hunger/thirst more manageable.
I don't agree that the game holds your hand. Maybe they are still playing the tutorial? Once you get the oxygen tank, you can freely move around the map. You might even get lost in the Mist, coming across new areas with containers that have new gear. So that part I'm a little confused about.
Clumsy systems might be in reference to the UI. I agree they could have handled things better. What really sucks is not being able to choose how many of something you want to craft. Let's say I want 10 pieces of iron..I have to go one by one instead of giving me the option to just choose 10 from the start. You can do this with ammo, though. Weird decision.
I can't speak for co-op yet since I haven't tried. Can someone comment on the bullet sponges they are talking about? I think it's just a matter of upgrading your equipment/skills. Maybe they were low level?
As I said, the game won't be for everyone. If you love it? Awesome. That's how I feel. Between the survival aspect and getting gear, it's been pretty addictive. If you don't like it? That's perfectly fine. You have your reasons.
I don't blame people for disliking it after the beta and being wary about a purchase. The beta was too confusing and overwhelming.
