I'm on an Asian movie thing as of late. Any good recent movie recommendations? Rewatched the vengeance trilogy today and still as good as ever. Also the film "confessions" and "your name" were both great!

Have you ever considered attractive women from other races?

It seems to me that you're only looking at one group of people and hence limiting your options.

Yes, race, height, wealth and sometimes people are more aware of social status that they are willing to let on.

My parents didn't force anything on me but I was told I have good hand eye coordination / reflexes when I was young and thus I got into sports via badminton and later tennis which on hindsight at late 20s is a good choice I subconsciously made in my formative years.

If I have kids in America I would rather steer him into break dance or bands music than your typical piano classes, anything social and popular is good.

You're taller than me. I've never put down my height on my dating profile, and I've never had women ask me how tall I am. Maybe they already presumed I'm not super tall because I'm Asian! Once they meet you in person and you have good chemistry, they don't care. And if they do, good riddance. Just focus on the things you can change about yourself and not what you can't, otherwise your defeatist attitude will be what's holding you back and not your actual height.

Being 5'7 is not the reason you've only been on one date. The way you blame your height made it sound like you were 5' or something.

5'5" myself, so I feel your pain. People are really superficial, no matter what anyone claims to say or whatnot, 99% of it is them lying to themselves to make themselves feel better. :-p (then again, I'm not emotionally ready to date currently, so its w/e to me at the moment)

Does anyone have any recommendations for decent loose leaf tea I can buy online, particularly oolong? I'd buy now and then from Teavana but they closed the store near me. I tried some other tea shop nearby but nothing smelled quite right.

Ten Ren teas are generally good. My mom looked the fancy, really expensive ones, but I have no idea what those are called. There is one where the whole jar is silver, though.

Just got back from a week in Melbourne, which is not in Asia, but which does claim to have some Asian things in it, like "the world's oldest Chinatown" (San Francisco's similar claim was apparently forfeited by earthquake). Place was in full-on Lunar New Year / Year of the Dog mode. For instance, the casino had a fancy zodiac animal display in the lobby:
lanterns on the ceiling:

Each one also had a horoscope description nearby, but I didn't take any pictures.

Also, once we found it existed, we had to make a bee line for the nearest branch of a Malaysian restaurant called Pappa Rich, where I had some very nice chicken rice and a drink I get each time I go there, a mix of lime, lychee, crushed ice, and icecream. It's really really sweet, but nice and refreshing. (the doorbell in the pic below is how you get the staff attention when you're ready to order)

I went to Pappa Rich once in Socal. It was pretty good, but didn't last because it was kind of expensive and I imagine most people there don't know how to eat Malaysian food.

NBC will probably post their Olympic programs onto Youtube sometime in the future. Nice of USA Today to highlight the US figure skating team Asian Americans in particular.

I'm a fan of Ten Ren's teas. Particularly the Kings Teas, i usually get the 913 or the 313.

I think you can find some on amazon.

Yuzuru Hanyu is my crush <3

Speaking of height in dating, does it actually matter? I've never had any issues (No I'm not one of those guys who are 5'10 and consider themselves short, far from it, I'm 5'4).

5'6 here. Never been a problem in my experience, but I'm long out of the game and really only hung out with Asians. I'm nothing special in the looks department, but I was in really good shape, had an attractive personality to more than a few, and a pleasant singing voice. I always had more luck with meeting people through meeting friends of friends though.

I'm extremely short, but I try my best not to let it get to me. 5'1" at best, 5'3" dude here. Never tried online dating though. I've been out of the game for a while now so..... Yeah.

lol thanks i saw you in that thread too, i actually got out of bed to do a huge rebuttal because it was 4:30 AM in Australia and I woke up and was just scrolling on my phone.

I actually tend to gravitate towards girls that are taller than me (Which is not hard at all at my height).

Online dating, never tried and don't plan to, to be honest with my baby face and height I fulfil like a "shotacon" fantasy as my last girlfriend would have said, not something I can really get across online.

Looks do matter but above all else, your personality is the thing that will get you a relationship. I've found this to be true 90% of the time.

Hey dudes: can I ask haircut advice?

I have porcupine asian hair. My hair sticks out in the direction it grows out of. It's pointy and stubborn. As a result, my sides get long real fast and they just stick out.

How do you deal with porcupine hair type? What do you tell the barber? Help.

I have like the complete opposite problem in that I have curly hair lol

Do you use any products? If you're keeping some length (especially up top), wax is great for control and style.

Fauxhawk is probably the way to go. My hair also sticks out on the sides and top and always bothers me. What sucks is that the hair in front lies flat. I have to grow the front out and use glue-like products to pull it back. The hair immediately behind the front always threatens to push that down so it's a struggle.

I've found that I have to explain my process clearly to your barber to make sure that they blend the corners well into the sides otherwise I can get either a pineapple or pinhead effect. Also, it helps to not let them wash my hair, as my hair is completely different afterwards.

My hair process is a continual ordeal. I moved recently and have no set barber. Just the other day I tried setting up an appointment and they never got back to me. I drove around to 4 local places I yelped and they were either closed or had long wait times. I gave up and just let my wife trim the sides so that I could wait another week or two.

Wait, Pappa Rich is expensive in the US? It seems fairly reasonably priced for Australian standards :|

The Sydney Opera House put up ticket prices for the Kingdom Hearts concert... Yikes, now that is expensive :(

I was talking about Justin Chon's last film, Gook, a while back and it's now on Netflix. So if y'all are interested in that movie, go watch it on Netflix. Haven't had the chance to see it yet but will try to soon.

Drama film based on the LA Riots. It also stars David So and if you like him you'll probably like the movie.

Just got done watching 'Gook' and it's not that bad of a film. It's relatable, funny, and the pacing is decent. Sure it may get corny and cheesy at times, but it gets the job done.

I don't necessarily feel that it reveals too much about the issues between the problems minorities faced in regards to each other. It has glimpses of it, but doesn't dive too much into it. The message is there and can be heard throughout the film, but it stops there.

It is a solid attempt at a more serious movie for Justin Chon and I'm fairly optimistic that he can make more movies like this in the future.

I've good good things about Columbus, another movie about the Asian-American experience, starring John Cho. It's actually on Netflix right now.

i guess 5'7'' is about 171cm or so?

had dinner with the family yesterday, waiter was the most hilariously over-familiar 50ish old chinese guy i'd ever seen, he's like (all in canto of couse) "Do you want the san choi bao or the noodles with the peking duck? What am I saying of course you want the san choi bao it's so much better". dude didn't even bother standing to take our order, pulled up a chair from another table and just plonked himself down at the table like he was part of the family lmao
