Hope that downtime is being used efficiently. I won't be home for some time anyway...sorry to everyone hoping to hop on now.

Why is it sad?

If you enjoy it, good for you. But the game clearly is very divisive and people who don't like it really don't like it, and figure out that they don't like it fast.

I'm usually on the same wavelength as most of the giant bomb crew and they put it best - " the majority of this game is walking to and from your ship to move objects or items around". The game just feels incredibly shallow and gives no real incentive to continue or any feeling of mystery about what can be found.

I get that the game is about emergent gameplay between groups of players but it feels so, so, so limited when you look at it even in comparison to a single player game like breath of the wild that aims to have emergent "not designed" games play moments created in it's world and sandbox.

I've had way more emergent moments in the betas than I did with BOTW, and that might be one of my top 5 favorite games of all time.

Like I said elsewhere, Rare's made two massive mistakes with this: (I) assuming people will break years--decades?--of habits regarding the need for arbitrary incentives to do stuff in games, and (II) failing to populate the world with enough reasons to break those habits for a vast amount of people. The first is a manner of potentially "reading the room." The second is content. Both are critical mistakes, although one (content) can be remedied over time. The other...I think that ship has sailed, pun intended.

Re: GB, having listened to them for years, it's no surprise that they're not really having fun while say, the Waypoint cast, seems to be having a blast (while also being critical).

No surprise in the least.

Doesn't mean either experience is more valid than the other, just like your bad experience is no more valid than my not bad experience.

Got my sealegs taken care of, and can't wait to get back to the game. Legend status, here I come Yaaaarrr

I'm glad i took the week off for this game. It's been an amazing week for me. Roleplaying in realest possible way.

People are saying that the game is a chatroom. That's not entirely wrong, but its the best goddamn chatroom possible. Made so many friends on live, just by playing and meeting likeminded people. The social aspect of the game can be the best, and it can be the worst at times.

I've nearly doubled my friends list during the course of the alpha/tests/betas and full release. Quite a social experience indeed.

I mean, honestly it needs the maintenance. Anything to get shit fixed faster.

As you said, this game is divisive. It just interests me the lengths people are going to dismiss this game like its killed their dog or something. That review thread is straight up hyperbole, with people claiming they've "seen" everything within a few hours despite no mention of their levels or the fact no one has gotten to legendary status yet. That doesn't excuse the lack of variety when it comes to enemies but those complaining about voyages clearly haven't progressed far because shit is hard right now for my crew with multiple maps, riddles, objectives occurring and at the very minimum three skeleton captains spawning on soul voyages. As well as that we get the lovely "all the islands are void of life!" despite going to every single island and seeing lush environments or barren wastelands but suited to the landscape.

Criticism should always be encouraged in video games as its a form of art that evolves over time and learns from the past to create new, interesting experiences. But seriously some statements are outright false and the fact you can't call people out on that without being told you are a fanboy or to shut up because you aren't jumping on the bandwago of hate/circlejerking is straight bullshit.

Yeah my fault totally, I should do time conversions ever time I look at a server status page. If only it had a banner at to that was maybe green, yellow, or red to indicate I don't know... the status of the server....
Well you said "if only had a server page saying it" it says it tho.

I won't be home from work for another 4+ hours so if they want to extend the downtime a couple hours, I'm good :P jk

Quick Gif from this mornings gadding about. Best I can do since XboxDVR.com isn't updating still.

I hate the water and I got seasick while still in Douglas Harbour going back to Liverpool once, and yet I could spend ages just sailing around in this game

I think they should add some sort of competitive stuff in the game. I don't know what, but it would give more meaning to pvp. They could add a ranking system maybe. Like, if you kill a player or sink his ship, your rank goes up. And you get a % of his gold for killing him. Also, if your rank is at a certain level, you are "wanted" in the world and people can spot your position, if they kill you they get a bigger % of your gold. Just an example of what they could do.

I want to see how many ships I've sunk, how many times I've sunk, stuff like that.

That would be a good start. I think they could implement that pretty quickly.

Finally got around to playing last night with my closest friends. Holy hell am I in love with this game!

Graphically, it's absolutely stunning. The technical wizardry that they've implemented to get the water looking so good just never ceases to amaze me. Otherwise, I was impressed with just how fun it was to make our own adventure while going on a voyage. Everything feels like a fun challenge to work though. Sailing the ship, navigating islands and the sea, and running into other players kept the experience feeling fresh for us.

I know that the overall design of the game is going to be hit or miss, but it was absolutely a hit for me! I can't remember the last time I was so in love with an online game like this. I've been thinking about it ever since last night.

Already have that one from the last stream. Its pretty cool in game. Nice to see them giving people another chance to get it.

Speaking of Mixer. They have those 24/7 chicken dinner etc.. streams for pubg and fortnite. Wonder if they will do something similar for SOT. Show all ship encounters or something.

I thought the server downtime was supposed to be over by now? This is becoming quite an issue as it's impacting the video I'm working on. :(

So, I finally got around to playing the release game last night, after having decent time with the betas. Knowing full well they're planning to fix the performance hitches in the X version, though in its current state, makes me a little nauseous. Keep in mind, I didn't have my headset, but know my way around the game well enough to communicate without.

I finally got out of the opening, and the screen just faded to black while I started to hear voices over the chat who proceeded to make fun of my gamertag, curse me out, and before my screen lit back up with gameplay again they had locked me in the brig. After berating my character's look for several minutes, they sank the ship and continued to berate me as it sank with me still lock in a freaking cage below deck. Now, I'm 28 years old, and have been gaming my whole life and playing online since I was 10, and I know "people are mean" in online gaming, but I'm absolutely baffled that this kind of scenario could be anyone's first experience with the game. Maybe I'm missing something.

I turned the game off. Don't know if I'm going back to it.

Edit: Also, seeing Dark1x speak about it above me here, I finally got to play it last night because the servers were down every time I had a chance to play since release.

I turned the game off. Don't know if I'm going back to it.

That happened to me on the first night and I quit out. It properly put me off then. But then last night I dragged myself back in and found a great crew, spent 3 hours exploring with them and it all finally clicked for me. It's definitely worth persevering.

I finally did a 'riddle' quest last night. Found it in a book on an island.

Loved it. The clues were fun, very satisfying feedback when you successfully completed a piece of the riddle. Gave me an excuse to travel around the island.

Really wish they employed those more regularly or consistently, maybe as a quest type for one of the factions. I could just be unlucky and never find them.

They apparently get more common the higher rep you get in the gold hoarders.

The riddles were one my favorite parts of the alpha and beta. Only seen 2 so far.

But there are some hard ones out there. I think they should have mixed more into the lower levels for the release build.

They are pretty great, i wish they make more complex ones going forward.
The X marks, the spot maps are great for lvl 1-5 but after that they can get quite tiring.

Haven't personally found a book yet with a quest, but I'm sure I'll stumbe upon them at some point.

By the way, this happened to me yesterday.

I believe it's some weird server issue, and not a bug, since at the end of that second video I got booted off the server, and couldn't reconnect for a while. Last night I've also had my sloop turn over and sink out of the blue. I don't think it's been leaking, I checked for leaks a couple of times, and I couldn't find any that haven't been boarded up. At first I thought it was the Kraken, but there was no sign of it anywhere around. Has anyone had anything similar happen to them?

For your first issue, that's usually what happens when the server you're on closes. Either ship goes into water like that or flies up into the air. It's pretty interesting when it happens (how alpha/betas closed at times :p )

Second issue, yours seems to be a small leak / rain / or if you had someone put a crying chest on your ship w/o you knowing. However, I've seen once where we loaded as a 3 man crew new into a game and when we came out, our ship was upside down... went over to it and it took 30 seconds or so before it started to sink itself. Had to mermaid to new ship, so nothing major but still weird glitch.

Few ideas to improve the game:

Get something for compelteing the voyage (partial reward), get rest at turn in so even if you fail getting back to port it's not wasted
On rank up give you a random item skin, still get gold but at least will give you something to shoot for early in game

I might give it another run, it's just that finding the time to commit to an online session is difficult. Thanks for this though. Just have to get lucky with a better crew.

Gosh this game...so much time just sunk into staring into the beautiful world.

Do we have any stories from people doing level 35-50 ish missions? I'm curious to see if the voyages get any more elaborate at a higher level, or if it's still the same simple tri-cycle of find treasure/capture animals/kill skeletons.

I don't think the game has enough at the moment to interest me enough into grinding towards the legendary status, but it will still be fun to jump into every now and again in the future when a new update is released, and I'll slowly but surely make my way towards that legendary status over a long period of time.

I kind of hope they add a few incentives to play solo as things take longer to do, like holding 2 items or chests instead of one, just things that make it a little easier for us to do.
