Fabulous news.

Never played either but backed 3 in the hopes of this happening because of it.

This year is shaping up to be just off the chain.

All of this takes me back to when I visited Japan in 2015, I went to Yokosuka and walked up to Dobuita street, of course didn't look nothing like 30 years earlier when the games are set, still I was tempted to knock at every door, asking randoms for sailors and practicing some moves in a paking lot.
Common sense stopped me from doing all of that, BUT a least I bought a soft drink at a vending machine and drank it all in one gulp

When I think of Shenmue, I think of the christmas I got it. That christmas was the height of japanomania in the US, and I was super caught up in it. I watched bootleg subtitled anime, and that christmas I got a japanese PC Engine Duo and some really japanese games, and shenmue. Shenmue was like this deep wish fulfilment for me, because I was DYING to go to Japan IRL at the time but had absolutely no way to do so. So Shenmue was the very next best thing. That entire christmas break, I honestly felt like I was in japan.

Some special game Shenmue was.

Holy shit, God is fucking Real. Imma goin' to church tomorrow and say "thanks" in person.

I'm fairly certain Shenmue III is 2019 now, which is fine, I've already paid for my PS4 copy in full. Just waiting for it now. This will make that easier. Thanks based SEGA. And God.

Please tell me the QTE was in the barbershop

I too hope this was the barbershop QTE haha

most mind blowing moments ever. I was in Louisana visiting my friend (the only friend IRL I know who is also hyped about shenmue -- he's the dude who I said loved Shenmue I and was into harvest moon) and we were playing super late at night at that part. We must have failed like 30 times. When we finally got it, it was so fucking mind blowing to us. We both went "Whooooooa."

If you haven't played shenmue II, do NOT spoil the barbershop QTE.

So glad Sega is planning to release them on all platforms.

Seems like a fairly basic port this is all I expected and could hope for to be honest!

I'm happy but hopefully at some point a couple of PC modders with a lot of time on their hands will decide to spruce up Yokosuka.

OH fuck, only played the first game up to like the last few chapters on an emulator, but this will be way better. As someone who didnt grow up with this and played shenmue 1 first in like 2016, it definetly holds up. Combat is great and the world is amazingly cozy.

Someone help me out here...I'm not the only one who's likely to play Shenmue 1 with the dub for nostalgia reasons right <_<

It'll certainly bring back fond memories of laughing at the kids' VA with my older brother!

you should say fuck your nostalgia and play the JPN dub. It's way, way better. The English dub for shenmue is horrendous. It actually takes me out of the game.

I know I know, but there's so much goofy campy charm to the awkwardness of the dub! If I'm honest think fits the game's oddball nature, at least in memory it does.

I'll certainly flick between the two anyway, and I do distinctly remember thinking the dub for 2 on Xbox was outright bad...whether that's because it was worse than 1's or my standards increased from age 10 to 12 I'm not sure!

I'm surprised they are even including the English audio.
It's kind of a horrendous embarrassment. Imagine someone playing it in English for the first time now.

I guess it's still a funny joke.

worth explaining why the english dub for Shenmue is so awful -- in normal voice work, you have directors who explain what is going on and help the actors know what they're going through. Sometimes, they see rough outlines of the sequence they are voicing. In some rare examples, they'll have multiple people around so they can actually speak back and forth. Basically, the more you know about what's going on, the better and more natural sounding.

When they recorded the shenmue dub, they sent the actors scripts with all the lines out of order, so they'd record them one at a time, with absolutely no context. They recorded each person individually, and had no director at all to explain to them what was going on. So the voice actors had no idea if the dialog they were having was an argument, a calm conversation, something said while running, etc. Nothing. They were just a list of phrases completely out of context, not even with the surrounding dialog. So the voice actors tried to remain as neutral as possible to keep the voice acting consistent and usable in all contexts.

Which winds up sounding really, really, really fucking bizarre.

The JPN dub is some typical anime sounding dub, so it doesn't really sound natural or anything. But it was also recorded like anime, with a director and context, so it sounds miles better. Characters sound angry when appropriate, calm when appropriate, etc.

The English dub is flat out broken.

Yeah it's pretty bad, but there's something oddly charming about it. I don't know. I think I'll just continue with the English, honestly. In terms of bad dubs, I would say there are those bad in an irritating way, but this is something different. Charmingly bad? I don't know how I would describe it.

What's worse to me is the compression on the audio files, which was a necessity at the time to fit onto the tiny Dreamcast discs. Unfortunately, I don't think they are going to be giving us uncompressed audio either way...

Can't wait to routinely disappoint by not buying him a capsule toy every day without fail :'D

If saves transfer, it's really worth it to buy toy capsules in Shenmue I.

At the beginning of Shenmue II, when all your stuff gets stolen, you can sell your old toy capsules from Shenmue I for quick cash. It's the difference between starting the game absolutely penniless, and starting with a sizable chunk of money. Having money early on can skip some segments intended to have you grind up your money to stay at a hotel, and can also let you buy some moves in Hong Kong way early on

Looks like next to no enhancements as expected, they aren't going to invest much in such a project. I wonder if the alternate control scheme does anything beyond normalize things like right stick = camera etc. Hopefully it only messes with the wandering as I doubt they could rebalance new controls for the fighting for such a low effort port. Still in obviously, it should beat emulating it, especially given dual audio.

There is a chance the uncompressed audio still exists. They didn't get either Ryo voice actor to come back and record new lines in Sonic Racing, yet all the dialog was from Shenmue and uncompressed. So it seems the original, uncompressed audio still exists.

I think there's less than some people would want but more than some people think there is. At the moment we know of the following features for the versions:

-They will be HD on PS4 & Xbox One.
-They will have PC Graphic Options on PC.
-The game features a new interface/UI.
-A new more modern control scheme is an option.
-There's some kind of 'time-travel' system which is not detailed yet what they mean, but could potentially aid one big issue in Shenmue 1 especially.

That's all that's confirmed for now, there might be more done as well, but there is evidence they are doing more than just straight porting at least.

That would be excellent if so. It was one of the downsides of the game. They put so much effort on visual presentation, that the audio had to suffer because of disc size. The music is beautiful as well, and even that got compressed. I'm crossing my fingers they restore the audio quality.

I mean, that's all in the video and announcement, I know, lol. And some of that is part of "straight porting" like the higher resolution/settings. New UI could be that too if it's functionally the same but just in higher resolution/with the corresponding system buttons instead of Dreamcast's and the data the VMU showed put on screen instead. We'll see.

Holy fucking shit. I never got to play this back in the day and couldn't go back to it later because my Dreamcast broke. I am beyond excited for this, especially after backing Shenmue 3. I hope it holds up in some fashion.

The boxart though? It's great for fans but the models look pretty plastic, is that really gonna appeal to anyone other than fans?

I have the Shenmue arranged LP

I'm not an audiophile (I actually have bad ears) but DAMN does the LP sound way clearer than the DC versions. Beautiful, beautiful album. I've had it playing all evening long over here.

Amazing announcement, but very disappointed that they haven't done anything 'special' for the re-release, like better textures, maybe revamped lighting? And the aspect ratio almost looks stretched in the trailer, like the laziest port ever. Thanks Sega, but this is nothing more than a cash-grab riding the coattails of the Shenmue 3 hype.

Would've been nice if they were Yakuza caliber remasters/remakes but this is still better than nothing since I never had a chance to properly play these games before. I'm sure the PC community will have custom high res textures and stuff out real fast as well.

Aye, I remember that w/Shenmue 2 on DC being in the UK. Felt bad hearing later that US folk who imported the PAL version couldn't transfer their saves from the US version of 1.

Think I'm right in saying the Xbox version just gave you a load of toys right from the off?

Wouldn't have it any other way <3

Honestly, my fondness for Shenmue is of it being this weird mix of humble sincerity + vanity project + cinematic aspirations + schlocky storyline & presentation, the goofy dub only enhances that potent mix for me.

Pretty much. They started you off with a bunch of rare, complete collections. Having a complete collection nets you like 2x to 3x the individual costs. So they just basically started you with a ton of cash. They also unlocked virtually every move from Shenmue I and had them all powered way up.

Which I guess is better than flat out locking you out of stuff, but it really made Shenmue I less special. Building a character -- including his cash reserves and move list -- then playing him in Shenmue II is way cooler.

I hope they work some way to transfer these stats into Shenmue III, too.

Good shit. I bought a Dreamcast to play it but the price of the 2nd game was a bit high and I decided to hold out for an HD remake.

Totally certain that the US physical release will be retailer exclusive, probably GameStop. I can't see SEGA being confident enough to stock multiple retailers with physical copies, especially if you can just download the two games from PSN. It'd be awesome if I'm wrong though.
