Yup. Sega must know that kind of stuff will be snagged.

Even if it's some kind of Limited Edition slipcase with a Steelbook and Mini-Artbook for an extra $20.

Okay there's something I have to get off my chest... I love Shenmue. It's clunky as Fuk. It felt kind of dated when it launched. It has terrible voice acting, and the story is trite.

But it made the first living breathing world I'd ever seen in a game. Seasons, weather, people with routines, cupboards to go through, doors to attempt to open, phone numbers to dial, forklifts to drive, crates to move, kittens to feed, toys to collect, 80s Sega games to play, karate to learn, fathers to avenge... someday.

I loved the games. I killed the disc drive in my Dreamcast on Shenmue.

I'm shocked that Sega finally considered it worth the effort and money. Glad, but shocked.

It's gonna be an experience to play this in Japanese. On some level I'll miss the English VAs, but I imagine it'll be better in the long run.

Technically this is Shenmue III news, but I don't think it deserves its own thread and I figured you lot might want to know.

Masaya Matsukaze - Ryo's Japanese voice actor - is gearing up to resume the role.

This is on the back of Ryo's English VA, Corey Marshall, saying that the current plan is for him to record in late May. I figure the English and Japanese dubs are going to be recording concurrently in Tokyo and LA fairly soon, if that date holds.

I can't wait to hear the first few voice samples of Corey in Shenmue III.

Should this align with face animation implementation? Are we seeing the end of the road? :D

A little look at the updated interface on the Steam version:

img-20180415-wa0001i3urd.jpg

I will buy this (probably the Steam version) as I only ever had Shenmue II for the Xbox and never played Shenmue I.

But I hope that they remake these two games a bit like how they upgraded the graphics in Yakuza: Kiwami, maybe using the tech in Shenmue III (is it Unreal engine?).

Shenmue III isn't being developed or released by Sega. Never going to get that kind of upgrade.

Well at 39,99$ (Canada here) at least it's decently priced for two games. Whether or not they're good well i'll have to find out.

It will never happen.
Never say never, although I do agree that SEGA likely don't have access to the art and tech created for III, and even if they did remakes aren't going to be made "easily".

This is the wrong conversation to have anyway. If I & II and III both do well enough in sales, it might open the door to IV being made under SEGA's roof.

Ehhhh, I thought that too but then I remembered the Yakuza 1 & 2 HD collection that preceded Kiwami. Of course, Yakuza is a pet series of SEGA that gets special treatment, but money (and fans) talk. If this collection makes enough for SEGA and fans shout loud enough, it might happen someday. Although the series' future is more important than going back to rebuild its past at this juncture, so IV and a potential V would have to come first.

Basically, I just don't think the door is closed. At least not forever.

So what has the discussion been like about how they have finally managed to get this to happen.

As far as we were aware there was numerous licensing issues they needed to resolve, not just in game visible things, but back end tech.

Was this just folklore?

Why didn't they use the Yakuza Kiwami engine to upgrade the visuals the same way they did with Yakuza 1 and 2?

The tech licencing story was never substantiated outside the GAF post it originated from. It hit the blog circuit, and went around enough times that it gained a weird amount of false credibility despite no forthcoming details, extra clarification, or people going on the record to back it up.

Fans couldn't really dig up anything about the issue, and it never really matched Yu Suzuki's comments about the creation of Shenmue where they would largely, or entirely, write their own code for the engine.

I believed it at first, but eventually it just didn't seem like it held up to scrutiny. If it *was* a thing we might hear about it eventually, but I'm guessing not.

Because Kiwami is an actual remake, and SEGA are not going to shell out the money to rebuild both these games that way.

Reading the OP, is the PC the only version getting improved textures/graphical options? They not upgrading the PS4/XBO versions the same way?

So many reasons. Firstly, remaking both Shenmue games in the Yakuza engine would cost more than creating a Yakuza game, and spending the equivalent of a Japanese AAA budget on Shenmue simply isn't going to happen -- not until the series has proven itself in the modern market.

Secondly, who would make it? Yakuza runs on proprietary tech created by the Yakuza team for the Yakuza games. Japanese companies being as conservative as they are, I doubt they would hand over their tech to another studio, especially one in another country (the Shenmue HD developers are based in the UK). They would have to do it themselves, and they're not going to put the Yakuza cash cow on hold to make Shenmue.

Is the time skip feature actually confirmed? I'm seeing a lot of people talking about time skip being added to Shenmue 1 as if it's fact, but I can't see anywhere where this is officially being mentioned...

Digging that redrawn HUD element in the Shenmue 1 fight scene. Looks a lot better than in the original.

Once they've got the shadows sorted in both games and applied an anti-aliasing solution, these will look pretty sweet.
