I haven't seen anyone bring this up, but is there a reason the original Wii U controls are just not even an option? My muscle memory is all thrown off.

Like, you can't have an option to have Y be roll and pick up barrels/grab things, while having ground pound be on the triggers.

What....am I missing something??
I'm using Y/X to roll and ground pound. The triggers are for grabbing things. You can have it the opposite too if you want. Not sure if this is what you're asking.

Games looks sharp on the big screen. Think the art style is a downgrade compared to the SNES games though

That were not the original Wii U controls I'm afraid...

Okay, downloading! Always wanted to pick it up for Wii U but just never did. What a bloody good decision that was!

I've ground out DKC2 and Crash 1 this year, bring this fucker on!

The game sure feels more tender and emotionally intelligent with Funky in the mix. Such a caring and supportive dude. There's a lot of whackness in the world, but Funky lets me know I'm his main monkey, the banana slamma.

The bonus stages stand out even more than ever as boring flow breakers. It is a shame they couldn't make them level specific and unique like DKC2. It's the one glaring flaw in an otherwise 10/10 game for me. Worth every cent of $60.

Now that you can take it anywhere, this game might just be too good. That time attack mode is gonna be getting a lot of use.

I'm also actually finding Funky a bit tough to get used to due to how slow his hovering is. Seems like it's probably best to not have to use it at all, which is more than plausible considering the rest of his skills.

In the Wii U version Y was used to run, roll, and pick up/grab things. The triggers were used for ground pound.

You can flip the controls around on this version, but neither of the two options matches the Wii U original. It's baffling.

Sorry, you're definitely remembering incorrectly, roll was always tied to the same button as ground pound.

I've always tried to figure out why they did things this way, in the end I can only reason the following
- An easy way to get items for the kids/not so good players who need them (but then why do we have the shop?)
- Something that works more with co-op in mind
- They felt like they'd done enough with the main levels, cut us some slack maaaan

Still even factoring in the box room banana collectathon you'd think they could have more variety basing them around the levels mechanics within the same visual template, perhaps it's because they tend to drip numerous banana nabbing sections into the levels themselves, in any case though it's the one mark I have against this game and one of the reasons DKC2 is still an arguable choice as best DKC for me.

I remember using L and R to ground pound and break out of the jet in the intro, hit bosses, etc.

And in the same control scheme, picking things up with Y, just like the SNES games.

Maybe the part I'm misremembering is using L/R to roll, and I'm remembering it as Y like on SNES. I looked up the Wii U controls, and the dpad controls are what I remember them being, with the one exception being it says L/R were used to roll and ground pound.

Video Games
The name of the game is "Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze" - feel free to do whatever after the "|OT|," but we'd like to keep game titles correct.

Obviously it's your guys' forum and all but I really really really strongly disagree with this decision here. The searchability wasn't affected by the playful title and I feel unnecessarily restrained in my creativity (as silly as some might think it is) since we're having a fun thread title for a fun game that didn't negatively impact the information value because the missing part of the title was included in the subtitle (I did a test with another game title + random word combo and the search worked perfectly). What's more, it actually kinda messes up the whole concept I was going for with this thread (all Funky Kong everything) and how it then plays into the subtitle. I hope you can tell that kicking up this much dust over it means it really bothers me and I honestly feel the title change was not justified. This isn't marketing or a database/wiki, the title was easily recognizable and it was totally in line with the tone of how the game is being presented. If someone butchered a title to the extent of unrecognizably or made some offensive joke, I'd understand but not here. I'd really appreciate it if you changed it back to what it was originally. Search works just fine (try it!) and nobody will be confused. Don't be nofunallowed.jpg ... this isn't something in need of top-level decision.

Thanks.

What was the original title?
Funky Kong Country. Rest was the same.

was the Funky reverse cover real? please tell me it was real

Took me a while to get used to the controls, but I think I've got the hang of them now.

David Wise did the soundtrack right? It's bloody amazing.

Is there 2 player co op? Can someone else be diddy while I'm D.K.?
All three of these are literally one of the first few things in the OP's opening info table. You really should take a 3 second glance at those at least.

I was half right. The alt controls are what I was looking for, they were just slightly off from what I remember. When I actually used them it came back and it was right.

I reached World 3 and one choice they made completely baffles me:

Why the hell did they leave the remix of the Bramble Scramble song for a rocket barrel level? It lasts like 6 seconds. And then you unlock a secret level called Bramble Scramble and they don't use that song? Whaaaat?

Anyways I'm loving this game and all the reworks of classic DKC1 songs. Would love to see a reference or two to DKC2 and yes, even 3, though.

I'm sure Wise knows that most of his fans consider that his magnum opus and he seemed to tease it throughout the game. He puts it on the pedestal it deserves eventually.

I caved. Had to get it again. Played up to 2-1. I forget a lot, so I am going to just go through the game organically and then go back and try and collect everything again as Funky. I liked Odyssey a lot and I know these aren't necessarily the same genre (2D platformer and 3D platformer) but this game pulls me in much easier than Odyssey did.

The Danger Zone
Obligatory post in this OT to say FUCK the key level and FUCK whoever made it.

Hope they step on a lego. Such a blemish on otherwise fantastic water levels.

Funky Kong is so fucking good, and this is the one and only time I've ever played a non-racing game and actually tried to do the time attack mode. This is so fun, especially since I didn't watch any footage of Funky Kong before hand. Dat moment when you come off the water slide and start surfing in the first level instead of diving into it made me shit my pants in excitement.

So damn good.

brazil, unfortunately
I got the game 20hs ago and played it for over 8hs in this period.
Never had a Wii U never saw more than 10min os this game on Youtube.
This is the best game I've ever played on a long time. For me this is the second best game available on the Switch, only behind Zelda BotW. I'm completely in love with this beauty, gonna finish the game and then go back to 100% it.

One of the best feeling is when you find those cleverly hidden nooks and crannies on your own. The way some of these are disguised is genius.

Okay, I don't post at Era much, but I gotta participate in this OT because goodness if I don't love this game and David Wise's musical therapy. What talents we've got that've produced this gem.

I've got a long history with the DK series and it used to be my favourite Nintendo franchise before Splatoon dethroned it, and I have so much nostalgia for the Country series. Retro is the Studio for picking the series and pouring their best into it, because really why would they waste their talent on any other franchise. I've missed Returns on the Wii (that E3 reveal was so Hype) but got it on the 3DS day 1 (which wasn't ideal but I gotta had to experience it). As a WiiUless scrub the only way I thought I could experience TF was through streams and playthroughs, which sadly have spoiled a lot of the special moments (3-1, where can I get a memory reset so that I can experience this level on my own?). I've watched so many streams and with each one, I felt more compelled to get the game and play it myself. A relative bought a Wii U in 2016 and I bought a copy digitally. Sadly though, I've only reached level 4 before someone decided to delete my file to download Mario Kart 8. My greatest wish for the Switch was a TF port, and here we are today, proudly holding my own physical copy and waiting to experience this game (properly) again.

Sometimes, I think to myself how a game about an ape's adventure to horde bananas manage to make me feel emotions and impress me on so many levels. Why am I emotionally bonded to this Kong ape and his friends. Why does a screenshot or a speedrun video bring out a smile out of me. And not to mention David Wise's wisely composed tunes.

I shall now pop my copy in the switch and will continue loggin my story with this game

Who's using the funky side of the reversible cover?

I'm not :P I love the original cast so much Funky's got some provin' to do.

So jealous of all of you playing this for the first time.

Also jealous of all of you playing this on Switch in general! UPS misrouted my package and I have no idea when it'll arrive.
