Yeah I can see this taking off, if yall split your family plan with 7 folks that's $4.50 a year split between the 8 of you. I think some of yall can handle that. Hell buy multiple years, everyone chip in $20.
Splitting $35 among randoms is a bit much. We have two Switches. This is a megaton for my family as we expect to buy three more this year.

They're starting with 20 NES and games and adding more as time goes. What will they do with SNES, N64 games though?

Still a big shame they're sticking to the app. It would've been fine as an option for those who can't/didn't want to use headsets but they really should allow voice chat through the console itself too. I mean, we know it can do it.
Yep. Except reports say the quality is terrible (haven't had the opportunity to try it myself).

Then again, the one time I used the app the quality was terrible on there too.

So, unless I'm missing something, the only way to get chat and game audio in the same headset is still that goofy daisy chain situation that became a meme last year?

Ouch. I rarely play online with voice chat so it doesn't hurt me. Still, it's pretty incredible that they delayed the whole thing a year just to leave it relegated to meme status. Games like Fortnite on Switch look waayyyy less appealing for the mass market now unless they're going to surprise people by allowing a Discord app on system or something.

I'm kind of mixed on this overall. It seems fine mostly, but the fact that basic functionality is still locked on the phone app is abysmal. Hope VC isn't dead. I still have hope that will return in some form that isn't those classic consoles.

I still find it crazy that it seems like they will be offering these "classic" games along with this service yet won't be offering them to be bought ala cart on the eshop. There's no way they actually do that right?

– Which games require Nintendo Switch Online to access online play?
– Nintendo Switch games such Splatoon™ 2, ARMS™, Mario Kart™ 8 Deluxe, Mario Tennis™ Aces, and Sushi Striker™: The Way of Sushido, will require a Nintendo Switch Online membership, but other games will vary

If this ends up meaning most or all 3rd party games don't require online pass to be mandatory. Oh boy...

I still don't understand why people are up in arms about voice chat. Is it really that essential to the online play experience to have random tweens yell slurs at you?

This isn't about random voice chat with people in a lobby. It's about not being able to create a private party and chat with friends inside and outside of my game, which even the 2011 Vita could do out of the box.

Not to mention, there's no system level invite system either so playing games with friends in Mario Kart and Splatoon ends up being a shit user experience.

There's no reason why Nintendo should be getting this right when everyone else is getting it right. Jesus Christ.

Not gonna lie, cloud saves make me very happy here! If I didn't already plan on paying for this, that would have sold me.

"With the Nintendo Switch Online smartphone app, you can also voice chat during your play sessions."

So this means no integrated voice chat :( damn...

Wah, this is quite shit. I don't care about NES games so I'm pretty much being forced to pay for something that was previously free and cloud saves. Hooray :/

Where is voice chat from the system?
Messaging friends?
Proper invites?
Party Chat?
Voice Messages?
Sending Screenshots to friends?

We're seriously expected to pay 20$ for cloud saves and nes games because it seems like that's all they're offering.

I don't believe the online service will feature games on N64 and forward. There has to be virtual console in the future.

I dont think so, family implyes same household same system, tho i might be wrong

No, the faq explicitly says any Nintendo account can be added to your family account so does not seem to be same system. It would create needless headache when a family member has a system of their own which happens often with handhelds.

I have zero interest in playing online, and I hate the idea of not be able to purchase the NES classic titles separately.

I prefer to invest these 20 dollars in 4 NES games linked forever to my account and without restrictions.

Cloud saves and games are cool and all, but why aren't they fixing the abysmal method of voice chat and the over reliance on the app in general? It doesn't even support any game but Splatoon 2 at this point and even in that game they have some strange restrictions on what you can play when using it. Seeing the app's integration in Splatoon 2 tells me that this requires extra work just to support a basic option like voice chat. Why can't they just streamline it as part of the OS so that developers don't have to make a useless extra button/menu just to support Nintendo's agregiously abstract ideas??

I know I shouldn't have expected better judging by their history but if you're going to charge for online I just can't believe they refuse to support very basic options that were implemented on other consoles a decade ago. I know I'm preaching to the choir but i just have to vent.

Microsoft and Sony charge $60/year for their online services. Nintendo charging $20/year is a freaking bargain, and everyone wanted cloud saves anyways.

They're gonna run out of NES games that people care about really fast, so I imagine at the very least SNES, GB, GBC and GBA will come to this service as well.
N64 and GC could as well, or they could just sell those.

Is there still no way to simply backup your save file to a USB drive or SD card? But they want to charge to save it onto the cloud? :/

We might get online NES Ice Hockey, which would be incredible.

$20 a year is worth it for cloud saves alone I think. I don't think I'll use any other stuff. Maybe Dr. Mario online
