Everyone's in here complaining about stuff and I'm just sitting here ecstatic that we might get online Blades of Steel.

I feel like at this point they should be giving away free GameCube games at a minimum. For those of you you bowing to Nintendo's alter for yet another copy of Mario 3, look at the games Sony and MS is giving away every month. I mean really...
Yes I too like to compare what Sony and MS "give away" for 60€/year vs what Nintendo "gives away" for 20€/year or 4.30€/year if you split the cost with 7 other people

lmao

like, are you completely oblivious to the fact that, worst case scenario, it's 1/3rd of the cost, or are you intentionally avoiding this fact

No, the faq explicitly says any Nintendo account can be added to your family account so does not seem to be same system. It would create needless headache when a family member has a system of their own which happens often with handhelds.
Thats cool then, also makes sense given Nintendo once commented they wanted each household member to own a switch ala phones instead of the "watercooler" approach of PS and XB

Praise the Architect for cloud saves. The fear of losing my 200 hours of XC2 keeps me from taking my Switch outside lol. The rest sounds okay, too I guess.

If this had launched with the switch, I'd totally be onboard, but this is way big of a nothing for a whole lotta nothing.

NES games? I thought it was like an online reworked game, or something more exciting. The app is horrible and the idea behind it is just as horrible. Unless this is somehow giving devs more online infastructure, idk why I'd ever buy this

This is better than I thought it'd be, honestly didn't expect them to have any cloud save support and the NES thing is quite a bit better than they first said, even if I'm in no rush to play most of those games again (or online). I had made my peace with paying $20 a year to play Splatoon and Smash online so I've got no complaints.

Pretty much sounds like the vague plan that was already given for Nintendo Switch Online a year ago, except this time it now has cloud saves and an option for a family plan to share the subscription features. Oh and the smartphone app is still there...because of course it is. Rather disappointing, but it's kind of to be expected for Nintendo when it comes to their online services.

I really wish they just brought over what they had on the Wii U and built their subscription service on top of that, while also keeping online play free (a la PS Plus on the PS3). That's not to knock on cloud saves, the rotating selection of classic games, or using a family plan to apply the subscription service across multiple accounts; but I personally really don't care much for such things.

I also really wish Nintendo were still adding VC games to the Wii U platform, because to me it looks like at best it will be a long while before Nintendo will launch a proper VC service for the Switch, and at worst they may not be bothering with the idea at all (I guess mini retro consoles like the NES Classic and SNES Classic will be used as a replacement to fill in the gap).

Them starting with 20 NES games is interesting since they said they will regularly add more. There's no way this doesn't leap to SNES and beyond before too long. Hopefully we get N64, GC, GB, GBC and GBA.
They'll probably sell the games individually a little while after they've been available for subscribers I'd bet.
I really hope so. I don't like the games being tied to a sub.

Didn't people wanted Nintendo to get with the times? Well there you have it, paid online, cloud saves and some oldass games like the rest.

What are you even talking about, where was this said?
It was a tweet from Chris Kohler (not sure how to embed):

The Nintendo Switch online service will include save backups and a library of 20 Famicom games, all with online play and voice chat (via the app). (You'll be able to play single-player games like Zelda with a friend online, swapping who takes control.)

I'm really dumb about this stuff so please forgive my dumb.

How am I supposed to get game audio and chat audio on the same headset if I'm using Discord and playing on my PS4? Are there discord apps on the consoles that I'm unaware of?

No, but who doesn't have a smartphone? It's a free 20MB app.

If you're into talking to randoms, yeah, you need voice chat baked in. I don't know why anyone would still want to subject themselves to that, though. There are plenty of ways to join a social discord and find other, reasonable human beings to play with without subjecting yourself to the hell. Many of Era's communities have discords.

I wonder if all those 20 games will each have their own tile on the homescreen, that thing will get cluttered very fast as they add more.

I have zero interest in playing online, and I hate the idea of not be able to purchase the NES classic titles separately.

I prefer to invest these 20 dollars in 4 NES games linked forever to my account and without restrictions.
Do we know the free nes games won't be linked to your account forever after you download them?

I didn't expect much, and that's what this seems to be. Though $20 for cloud saves is enough for me to subscribe.

I don't expect this to have much of an impact on Splatoon, but hopefully this won't kill Arms' population. Eh, most people that play Arms probably also have Splatoon:)

I'd imagine that this leaves room for Game Freak & The Pokémon Company to bypass this service if they want to for Pokémon Switch. Same for third parties, as you mentioned.
Why would Nintendo allow that? I can't believe people think Pokemon won't require online. Millions of dollars to be made from that alone.

That's still far too much for Mario 3, Zelda 1, and a bunch of trash. PS+ is the best deal after the first month.

My brother uses my switch so I will have to pay the 35 so he can play Splatoon, wish the 20 covered the console and not just a single account.

It is on Steam and also on a lot of non-gaming platforms.
Good for steam and those non G platforms then?? I mean of those are the onle "free options" this goes beyond of "Nintendo is doing it wrong"

I mean yes pay for online really has not merit shown yet but, 2 gens of PS and XBL have proved people will put up with it happily so, brace for then worst

Eh, whatever, I got cloud saves and a few NES games to play. I'm good so far, but they'd better start re-mastering N64 games like a muhfucker if they're not putting the originals on this program.

It's real fucked up that non-subscribers have no way to save, though! Not only can you not play online without this, but they get the people who say, "I guess I don't need online" by countering with, "Can't save your shit then!"

couldn't care less about those NES games, but that's a decent number to launch with and I hope they expand it to other systems.

Pricing is good to me and cloud backup was a feature I dearly wanted so of course I'm in.

I can't fucking believe that after a year and a half the Switch's retro game service finally launched with freaking black box NES games.

Black Box NES Games. The worst of the first party offerings. Literally Mario 3 and LOZ 1 are the only ones worth playing from this lineup of 10, so the latter half better be good to make up for it. Hopefully Ice Hockey's included, one of the few sports games on NES that means a damn, but I bet we'll get Urban Champion instead. I remember when GAF blew up over the Wii U VC's launch lineup even though it was perfectly fine all things considered, yet this is far worse, and makes me hate the fact the old method of VC games is now gone.

The worst part? The ACA Nintendo games literally make this lineup worthless as you have superior versions available and coming soon of titles like Balloon Fight and Ice Climber. Unless they have online leaderboards I don't even see some of these games being played online at all. Who would wait five minutes for the other player to die in SMB3, and play a whole game that way? This is just dreadful, and not at all close to the "Worth the wait" thing they hinted at. Cloud saves? I'm thankful we have a timeframe for them but I'm also peeved that it wasn't a feature day one. And thanks to the FTC/whatever Nintendo didn't put on the Switch that a phone makes easier to do, that shitty mobile app is still around.

And let's not forget we don't have any way to even send our friends list friends any sort of message at all, and it seems like there'll still be no way to outside of voice chatting on a phone app. God this system has tons of missed potential with the retro game library that makes me glad to have my Wii U plugged in and active. Also, why can't I fucking import FDS Zelda 1 from the Japanese store, why do I need two subscriptions? Let me own my games damn it, I bought 170 Wii U VC games for christs sakes and was willing to open my wallet to you again to do it all over again with imports!
