It seems really really bare bones for a paid service. I know it's only 20$ a year (well 35$ for me so my wife can use it too), seems like it's really lacking though even at that.

Just interested in cloud saves, I hope they still have plans for Virtual Console or whatever they call it, I like to own games so this Netflix like subscription doesn't appeal to me.

If you want to use voice chat in the game, you need to use this abomination of a headset, in case you forgot;

No you don't need that. There are several simple solutions (just buy a little cheap connector, these are available since years), but this has discussed in several threads already.

I'll be paying.
I wish I wasn't, but then I was one of the kids that 'had' to subscribe to Xbox live so I could play Halo 3 online, so I only have myself to blame.

That said. I dropped Xbox Live for PSN when PS4 arrived, and PSN is a serious downgrade. Not planning to re-new my PSN subscription, and will stick PC/Switch for a while.

You're just being a elitist with the browser talk. It's more than serviceable. It ain't no chrome or firefox or opera obviously. Nobody uses it like that.
I'd thank you from refrain from name-calling. No, I'm not being an elitist - the browser is utter crap and I never use it for that reason. You're allowed to think differently, but I'm not calling you anything because of that.

And yes those features are free on these consoles, so Nintendo should aim to match similar features, for free.
I absolutely agree. My post was specifically about the online service, however.

I actually think this initial price offering is good and a great deal, however inviting the comparison seems more like scapegoating with a "well I prefer wah wah wah" rather than actual intent on saying "hey look, these people offer this already, and this is what Nintendo should at least aim for" regardless of which parts are free or not.
Again, I won't argue with you about the free stuff Nintendo doesn't have (yet?) on the Switch. My initial question was about how attractive is the Nintendo Online deal in face of PS+ and Xbox Live. And in that regard, well, it's basically paying less for online + retro games versus paying more for online + newer games. And while I obviously would rather pay less, I think both are crap, which is why I don't understand anyone thinking Nintendo's deal is terrible while the others are good for some reason.

If online multiplayer games were at all a priority of mine, I could see myself living with Nintendo's measly $20/year, but i'd be much less okay with the prices practiced by Microsoft and Sony. So much so that I'd probably only play online on my PC.

There's both free and paid material for online that Nintendo has to address, so inviting the comparison inevitably brings both around anyway. I just wanted to recommend not to do that, because it will devolve into "what I prefer" nonsense posts with people defending other consoles, or like you getting defensive a bit about Nintendo's offering.
I do understand that, in this case, one thing leads to another, and as such people are bound to discuss the Switch's shortcomings outside the Nintendo Online program. It's just that this has nothing to do with my initial question that you replied to, which pertained exclusively to figuring out how "worth it" people think each online program is, and why.

I'm paying $20 a year for a Netflix style catalog of classic titles starting with the NES. I'm cool with it. Everything else is icing.

having a phone app to deal with really kills their online efforts.

if Switch had its own voice chat app online experience could be 100x better.

Kuwait.
the family plan makes it really really cheap, me and my friends are actually thinking if they can pay me their money(I'll do the payment myself) of 3-5 years ahead in one go, instead of yearly putting $5 every September

Watch multiplayer games like Mario party not have online.

Any word on games like Tennis, Smash, Arms, Kart actually using the app?

To be honest the insistence on using that garbage app is the worst thing about the online.

System level lobbies and chat between friends too hard for Nintendo. It's worthless in itsi current implementation.

The price doesn't upset me - it's bloody cheap really compared to other services. What gets me is that they're still insisting we use that app. Which is so breathtakingly bad I don't even know where to begin. I almost wonder whether they're trolling us all and they're going to unveil a total revamp of the app at E3 because.... At the moment it's fricking awful and they've not updated it in about 7 months and have added literally no functionality beyond it not CUTTING YOUR CALL OFF when it goes to sleep... Something phones have had cracked for the last 10 years at least. I would also be fine with using an app for voice chat.. If the app actually worked even close to as well as Discord.

So that is what it has come to? Not even discounts are good enough unless it reaches a certain percentage. I like saving money. Whether it is 10 percent or 30 percent.

Can we stop using objectively? Because for others 20 bucks a year for a Netflix style sub service of getting classic games in waves, discounts, and cloud saves is a pretty cool with a good price.

If you want to bring up local USB backup saving, that is fair, but that is also a separate issue.

That may be pretty cool for some people, but no, this service doesn't match the competition's services. Yes, it's cheaper. But you get fewer features. Depending on the discounts, the service might pay for itself. That's good. But speaking for myself, I'd pay more for a modern, complete online service. This is basically worthless to me as it is and so it's disappointing.

Yeah I was very hopeful that the delay was a sign that they were reconsidering their reliance on the app... It's pretty absurd that, even with all of the horrible reviews and backlash the app itself has gotten they don't seem to mind relying on it.

Presumably it will be updated with new games and features as the service launches, but having it still be mandatory for voice chat is the real problem here.

Maybe they'll release the app for download on the Switch itself! Or is that (way) too optimistic?

I think the NES games being offered with the service will use it. But no, other than that and Splatoon 2 there aren't any announced games with the service.

They haven't released the final version of the app yet, the final version of this service isn't coming until September, so yes it's going to be different. As you said, they haven't been updating the release app. It's not trolling, they haven't revealed the updated app yet, the existing one was a beta app designed to kinda show what could be done with Splatoon 2, they were very clear about that.

For the first time ever, players will be able to enjoy these classic NES games online. Depending on the game, players can engage in online competitive or co-op multiplayer, or take turns controlling the action. Friends can even watch each other play single-player games online, and "pass the controller" at any time. Every classic NES game will support voice chat via the Nintendo Switch Online smartphone app*.

ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!!

This is outrageously awesome to the FUCKING MAX!!!!! Play the original Super Mario Bros. with ONLINE CO-OP???? HOLY SHIT THIS AWESOME! Finally Nintendo gets it! I've been wanting the ability to play their old classic games online for AGES!!! It's been possible with emulators but to now have it official and legit makes me weep with joy! Can you imagine Playing Mike Tyson Punch-Out coop? Or the original Zelda?!?! WOW!!!

As an older gamer and huge retro gaming fan all I can say is bravo Nintendo! Now if they eventually bring their SNES titles to this service then I will truly lose it!!!!! Imagine Mario World with online co-op!!! Or Donkey Kong Country! Imagine logging in and watching someone casually play through FFVI? Wow...the potential here is....STUNNING!

Welp, guess I'll be getting a Switch soon. This just sold me big time!

Too optimistic.

Regarding online Nintendo has never delivered.

Have we got a source where Nintendo state the app is indeed "just a beta" and that a full release client will launch with the online service?

I mean great if so but I feel like they need to show it at E3 to start winning some goodwill back...

They said the app would launch with "limited features" before the paid service kicked in, though that was back before it was delayed.

Finally, someone else who is excited by this as me. Being able to pass the controller in the original Zelda online. How awesome is that?

Granted, this may be because I can't really have these kinds of experiences in person anymore, being an old dude with a job and all that.

Meh, it's not very exciting (Cloud Saves are nice, but not a real tangible benefit...until you get your saves corrupted and then its amazing), but $20 a year is basically no money and the NES collection is pretty neat. I'd be happier paying nothing, but if they are going to force me to pay for online, the low price and some free games (and hopefully useful discounts) pretty much soften the blow to nothing for me.

I'd be way more excited if the NES stuff became a full blown NES/SNES/64 netflix style virtual console. I'd be willing to pay an increased yearly cost for that.

Sad to see Nintendo leave the "free online" train, but given how everyone else has done it forever, seems inevitable to a degree.

This sounds like garbage. A few NES games, and you have to pay extra to have more than one account on the same console. You still have to use the mobile app. I can't see myself ever paying for this.

And can we have regular backup saves sometimes this millenia?

I guess PC will be my only online platform from now on.

I'm one of the most critical poster of Nintendo on this board, and 20$ is nothing. That's like buying a pint for yourself and a buddy at a pub (with tip).
