Imagine if some of y'all were in your 20s and 30s during the N64 era. Shit would've been exactly the same.

"Rare are making a fucking Diddy Kong racing spin-off? Where's DK Country? Waste of talent!"

it's true

though to be fair, Rare put out Blast Corps, Goldeneye and Diddy Kong Racing all in 1997. This is Retro's first game in 4 years. so when a great team finally unveils their big secret game and it's based on an IP or genre that you aren't interested in, it stings a lot more these days.

I'm just wondering how many sources are out there?! It's like there are 20 people who all know what is going on at Retro.

nintendo illuminati are all chatting in the same discord server

This feels like a waste of Retro's talent, I want something original and ambitious, not a racing spinoff.

In what isn't the game original and ambitious? Which areas of the game are you referring to, or are you referring to the game as a whole? I haven't seen the game yet, so I've really curious about your thoughts about the gameplay, graphics, music, writing, etc.

Conspiracy theory: Nintendo let the rumor leak, so that people get there over reactions out of there systems, before they show the game for real. Worked wonders for Mario & Rabbits.

It's a racing spinoff in the vein of Diddy Kong racing, how ambitious can it be?
Anything which isn't a new IP and a AAA cinematic action-adventure isn't even trying!

How were they able to develop 3 games in one year?

This sounds like apologism/damage control. Retro took two years between MP1 and three between MP2 -> MP3 -> DKCR. They're all among the best Nintendo games ever and didn't required them 4/5 yrs dev cycle. They don't need to "rush" anything.

dev times have been increasing for everyone when HD consoles came in, you're not breaking any news here

The cast of Star Fox is just a much easier sell. Heck, it's still the premier meme generator for Nintendo due to how much people like Fox and the crew, even with the existence of Falcon Punch and that one bit from Super Paper Mario that gets posted so much.
Is it? Having only played the original a bit I know the 4 wingmates and that's it. I would say F-Zero characters are more unknown but in both cases there's still going to be an effort required to sell the number of unknowns needed for a full racing roster.

I'm just not seeing enough to set Star Fox apart from a targeted audience standpoint when MK exists. Unless their intention is indeed to mostly fill the shoes of a MK so that there doesn't have to be another one so soon.

Only Miyamoto said this and he's not even the general manager anymore. Also, Retro probably wanted to work on Star Fox.
Enough other people must feel the same if there still hasn't been any hint of a new F-Zero.

As much as I'm excited for the protential of this, now I can foresee meltdowns if it doesn't turn it to be true at all. Either scenario, there will be meltdowns. Those from hose excited about the possibility and those not excited about the possibility.

The Internet
I'm having flashbacks to "It's fucking Donkey Kong" with this thread.

I think people would only be satisfied if Retro was developing Metroid Prime 4, Super Mario Odyssey 2, and Breath of the Wild 2 all at the same time.

Wait and see, it's a weird idea but Rabbids turned out great. I've been over the Retro's talents are wasted camp ever since Tropical Freeze proved me wrong.

Guys, you don't understand, there are only three ambitious genres, the RPG, the Open-world and the shooters.

At that point Rare had already put out multiple games on the system, and we also knew Banjo was in development. It was also a forgone conclusion that a 3D DK was coming eventually.

I agree that the arguments that Retro is "wasting" their talent on this is ridiculous, but this is a poor gotcha.

Here's the thing: If you don't like racing games then I don't really see any reason to give this sort of thing a chance. DKR really is just a racing game, and having a hub world and boss fights doesn't change that.

That being said, not every game has to be for you. Racing games used to be a lot more common so look at this as something where fans of another genre finally get more games.

Yeah I understand this. That's why I said I'm resigning myself to the fact this may just not be for me. However, I was never a big fan of 2D platformers but I still loved DKCR/TF, and Metroid Prime 3 was the first First Person game I ever liked. While I still haven't found a 2D Platformer I really care for (outside the Celeste and Limbo variety), I have since loved a ton of First Person games. I'm hoping Retro can do it for me, for a 3rd time.

The whole "Diddy Kong Racing" comparison is likely pretty superficial. I mean.. it's Star Fox. It could quite possibly have legit shooter bosses. Or do something very different.

I think anyone trying to judge the concept before an official reveal is being hasty. Like Mario+Rabbids there can be a lot more to a game than what a few words of a leak imply.
I mean, the leaker compared the Bosses and hub directly to Diddy Kong Racing. I, of course, expect there to be far more to the concepts, but, I think, judging by what the leaker said, you can get an idea of what to expect by looking at those videos. Also, like I mentioned, I was hoping to see something that didn't look like a racing game. I did not get that.

It's worth mentioning, I wasn't part of the Mario + Rabbids hate train. I wasn't sticking up for it, or anything, but I definitely thought it would be a wait and see thing. I also, kinda liked the concept in certain parts. So I thought it had potential. Of course, it was better than we all thought, in the end!

if you don't like racing games there's little chance you'll enjoy this, just like you weren't enjoying metroid prime if you weren't a FPS fan or with DKCR/DKCTF if you weren't a 2D plateformer fan

no game can please anyone and retro never tried to make their games for everyone

I agree. But like I said, they turned me around on other genres, or styles. Part of me is hoping they can do it again.

Well that's not at all what I was expecting Retro to be working on.

It would be more exciting to hear if it was F Zero themed as in not much of a Star Fox fan but I am a fan of kart racers and the like so I will delay judgement to when this is assumably revealed at E3 if real.

Is anyone really that attached to the FZero license itself? Or do you just want really fast racing? Because I feel like this will offer that.

Games were easier to make back then.

Not really. N64 was very hard to develop for, as was admitted by Yamauchi to be intentionally like that to repel "untalented devs", which is why there was constantly delays for the platform. Releasing three games in a year with good quality was a huge achievement, plus the fact Rare was far, far larger than Retro ever was.

I'm attached to the good Captain himself and his series' soundtrack in addition to the gameplay. But this sounds cool too.

I live in a giant bucket.
Having sat on it some more, I guess I'm okay with this. It's not a concept that particularly excites me -- I'd rather see Retro take a grander spin on a mainline Star Fox -- but if anyone can pull it off, it's Retro.

If it's real, I'm looking forward to trying it out at E3. It's all about execution.

... No games, were much easier to develop back in the past.

Metroid Prime had 30 people working on it for two years, Anthem has 750 people working on it and has been in development for 6 years. Red Dead 2 has >1000 people and has been in development for 5 years.

I can get behind a reskinned star fox.

Though after Nintendo's comments about F-Zero not being viable for a return, I'm curious to know why they think Star Fox is significantly more viable. Clearly the series had already ran its course before the last game. And using the IP in another genre, after recent efforts, just seems like its one that's struggling to find modern relevance or is one that Nintendo wants to make relevant. Something that they could have done with F-Zero. Maybe this is supposed to be a game for casuals unlike F-Zero would be. but then they already have Mario Kart...

Star Fox has more "bankable" characters than F-Zero sadly enough
Plus maybe this means they can combine the fans of both franchises, who knows

Specifically, it's pure fast racing without weapons. Attach that to mental track design and you've got digital bliss. That's what F-Zero offered. I liked Wipeout well enough, but it's just not the same.

I get my F-Zero kicks from Trackmania nowadays, but I'd still love to see Nintendo give it another go.

You mean the same year in which they released Blast Corps, Goldeneye and Donkey Kong Land 3 before? Yeah, no, I don't think people would be reacting the same because they had been releasing a number of games of different genres consistently and it wouldn't have been 4 years since their last game and potentially 4 years till their next one

I think I'm getting more "okay" with the idea of this game the more times Diddy Kong Racing is name dropped in this thread. Initially, I was very shocked and not what I had envisioned that Retro was working on all this time, but I don't doubt they can make something cool. Definitely one of my favorite studios.

If people just wanted fast racing games they would have a bunch of others to look to. No other game captures the feeling of F-Zero even if it is also a futuristic racing game.

People who want F-Zero, want that. Not another goddamn Starfox spin off.

Retro also had several other games in development that were cancelled, with team members from those projects joining Metroid Prime.

Remember F-Zero death race? What if we get something similar in this with 100 racers...

Star Fox Battle Royale Race.
