Well...guess it was to be expected, seems both Tennis World Tour and AO International Tennis are (really) bad. I really enjoyed Tennis games back on Amiga and of course Virtua Tennis on Dreamcast and Top Spin later on Xbox.
I've been playing a bit of AO Tennis lately and BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOY is that game bad. You're not fighting against the oppopnent, you're struggling with the controls. It's so fundamentally broken I don't think there's anything they can update or patch to make it any good.

That's why I hope TWT will improve. The foundation seems to be there.

Why no more reviews out?
Publisher asked to wait with reviews until they big patch in June 4 is out that Will zilver a lot of problems and added features like online play and doubles.

Nobody is obligated of course but I can believe quite some sites are waiting therefore with their reviews.

Apparently the Xbox One patch already solved some of the issues. There is actually a living audience right now with realistic reactions. Still a long way to go off course, but I am hoping for the best in the next 2 weeks.

The 'lag' you see in the video is not the game, it's the video itself apparently.

I bought this thing, please don't make the same mistake I did. It's bad, there's a foundation for a good tennis game there, the gameplay is much better than AO Tennis but that's not saying much. Maybe after a ton of patches it will be worth it though.

The first thing I'll do once I get this game is deactivate the commentary.

I mean WOOOW.

Talk about using your limited budget.

Indeed, I was trying it and the game is now improved, at least some of the infuriating stuff like forcing you to sit through the ball-bouncing every time, even when you re-position the player, is now alright. However, there are still some instances where the game decides to play a different shot from the one you choose and where you hit the ball using The Force.

How long do you think the game will continue improving through patches? I refuse to buy a broken game but I'm hungry for something like Top Spin...

This is getting really embarassing now...

From their facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/notes/tennis-world-tour/tennis-world-tour-patch-1/2066691700257086/)

UPDATE 2: The team has been working very hard to find a solution, yet we will not be able to release the PS4 patch today (28 May). We aim to have it ready tomorrow and will keep you posted on the progress. We deeply apologise for the inconvenience this is causing.

And it's not even sure patch 1.0.2 on PS4 will fix the biggest issues :(

Let's pray it somehow ends up working.

From the clips I've seen - every deep shot seems to catch the line. Is it possible to hit it long?

If you mean getting the ball behind the line, yes, but it only happens if you overcharge your shot and the power jauge turns red.
But you can overcharge and still have your shot fall inside the court.

It is. One of the only good things about the game is that every single possible miss was there: wide, long, net, top of net then wide/long etc.

There was even one time it looked like the ball got shanked into the crowd which surprised me.

I the next two to maybe three weeks we will probably see quite some patches. A lot of the issues are 'easily' fixed in my eyes. It's not that they have to change the whole game to fix the issues.

How long we will see suport with other patches or other content after the first month remains to be seen off course. A lot will probably depend on the sales. I do hope the game even if it is quite bad right now will be profitable. Because image if this and AO Tennis is a financial flop. Then we can maybe wait ten years for the next tennis game.

This is getting really embarassing now...

The fixes in the patch notes for the PS4 version are actually really small things. Giving the right one handed backhand to Tsitsipas or making sure that a one handed backhand player doensn't hit a double handed one time in 70 shots is good to fix, but certainly isn't that crucial right now.

I really hope that they add some other fixes in the patch that is coming today.

how's the game?
I've read that it's not that good but I'm not looking for a perfect tennis games, I just want one good enough (that is not frustrating to play), that has real players and an authentic look.

It seems so weird too, as apparently the update 1.0.0.8 for the xbox which is already out actually fixes some problems the ps4 version on 1.0.1 still has like the public reaction seems to be a bit better on xbox 1.0.0.8 than ps4 1.0.1 ... this is so weird.

I'm really curious to finally see this 1.0.2 version on ps4, I still play a couple of matches in career mode everynight after work, the parts that work gameplay wise are satisfying, if they manage those updates correctly, it can be good, but right now I don't even want to show the game to friends when they visit, I'm afraid they wouldn't want to try again later even after patches lol

Avoid it. It's a completely broken, buggy, unfinished mess. Just look at the replies to their Twitter/Facebook posts, so many buyers want refunds.

Give it two weeks and some patches. As an enormous tennis fan and decent player myself I was looking forward for a tennis game for years. And while I agree it has some big issues, I do enjoy some quick matches now and then though.

In my eyes the game is now a 6/10, with the patches in the next two weeks it hopefully will be a 7,5/10. But I am a huge tennis fan like I said, so I probably am a little biased and can forgive some of the flaws easier.

That's where I'm at too (expect I suck at real tennis ^^ but love the sport). I almost feel ashamed to enjoy the few matches I play on the game's present state, but they are enjoyable. Of course I play listening to music to cover the dead atmosphere, I roll my eyes when me or the opponent hit a ball without touching it, I laugh at the reaction shots of the players(seriously they are quite bad, there are like 3 of them and they look seriously bad) but the gameplay itself and the good feeling of what works are there, this is so frustrating ^^

7.5 it's fine for me. I'll give it a month, hopefully I will be discounted by then.
Thank you

So sad that this game did not turn out to be very good. I think that people want a new tennis game to be released -- there has not been anything since Top Spin almost a decade ago at this point. Tennis has always been one of my favorite sports video games -- it brings me back to the days when we amused ourselves for hours playing Pong. But, for 2 studios (this and that awful AO International Tennis game) to come out so close together and both be bad, I hope that it does not kill developer desire to actually make a decent tennis game. Game companies have to realize that they can't just throw incomplete, broken games into the marketplace and expect that they will sell -- there is too much competition for people's attention out there. I read one review that said:

Somehow, it's all gone very wrong. Tennis World Tour is a shambles; a half-baked, incomplete game that should never have been released in its current state. As of writing, there's no online functionality, something that's made apparent by the greyed-out menu option you'll see when you start the game up. It's an omission that was only revealed once the game was made available in select territories, with the developer saying that they hope players "will enjoy the local multiplayer or start your journey to the top in career mode in the meantime. " It's just awful PR. Also missing is any form of Doubles Tennis, but at least the developer had the good grace to mention this months ago

https://www.criticalhit.net/review/tennis-world-tour/

Just disappointing and unacceptable!

At this point I'm wondering what their plans for the Switch version look like.

They're getting bombarded with terrible reviews (for good reason), they have got to be working day in and day out to fix numerous bugs and implement the freaking online mode AND they want to release another version with its own update path on Switch? Right around Mario Tennis release?

This has disaster written all over it.

yup, it's going to be a flop, people are not going to have that kind of patience in a $60 game to wait for patches

Yeah, the game should have never been released in its current state. I think there is the base for a decent tennis game, but the game would clearly needed a few more months of development.

100% agreed, but let's be positive and hope the developer can fix the game. Instead of calling it pure garbage, we should actually say what should be improved. If this game also flops I don't see a future for tennis games anymore.

You'll probably like the patch. Audience is finally fixed and commentary should be a little better. Also stamina is fixed, which will make the rallies much more fun.

A decent patch today will be released for the PS4. Fixing some pretty bad bugs already

Hello everyone,
Patch 1 for Tennis World Tour on PlayStation 4 has been submitted and is in the process of getting deployed. Usually this can take up to 4 hours, so while it's worth checking from now, you may have to wait until around 9PM CEST / 3PM EDT before it becomes available. In the meantime you can find the list of changes below.
We know this took a lot longer than expected and we really thank you for your patience and your feedback. On the upside we did manage to expand the patch from it's original state ant it now includes a number of improvements thanks to your feedback.
We know there are a lot of things you would like to see addressed. Rest assured that we are listening and that we're working hard to improve and expand the game.
PLAYSTATION 4 – VERSION 1.0.2
BALANCING
  • Decreased the maximum spin of sliced serves.
  • Increased the speed of flat and topspin serves.
  • Decreased the stamina drain of powershots
  • Increased the stamina drain of sprints
  • Increased the stamina regeneration between points
AUDIO IMPROVEMENTS
  • Fixed missing crowd audio and applause during the match intro and between points.
  • Improved the consistency of the audio commentary.
GRAPHICAL IMPROVEMENTS
  • Added venue-specific outfits for all staff around the court.
  • Added ballgirls as possible staff around the court.
BUG FIXES
  • Fixed a bug causing players to use slice shots excessively when reaching for a far ball.
  • Fixed a bug causing one-handed backhand players to sometimes use a two-handed backhand. This should no longer happen.
  • Fixed Tsitsipas' backhand style.
  • Fixed an issue causing players to behave as if they had a "volley preference", thus attracting them to the net more than they should. Automatic movement towards the net should only happen very rarely now.
  • Fixed a crash occurring frequently in the Equipment menu with DLC equipments.
  • Fixed a crash occurring on non-playable events in Career mode after exiting a match in Exhibition mode.
  • Fixed Federer and Dimitrov's DLC racket's brand logo (Wilson).
  • Fixed sets/match and decisive set's scores display in Career mode.

I may be giving this game a shot today. I've been craving a tennis game like everyone else here. I have some trade credit saved up and can get the game for about $20. I've always enjoyed somewhat broken games anyway, lol.

When I lit up the ps4 and saw the patch, i checked the patch notes and saw "fixes serious crashes" and thats it. I got really scared that only the crash when changing equipment got adressed, so I came here before booting the game, and Im reassured.
Booting up thz game now, fingers crossed ^^

So I can confirm that the audience is vastly improved. The commentary still sucks but muting just the commentary is acceptable now with the crowd noise.

The gameplay is improved slightly. The main problems are all still prevalent though. Like the game not doing the shot you selected at all times and the ball not actually hitting the racket on defensive shots. There is still problems with not enough errors. The players return the serve 98% of the time and I have yet to see a ground stroke end up in the net.

In career mode I noticed a bug that prevents you from changing coaches/agents. That has not been corrected either.

Hopefully there's another patch coming soon.

There is still one good thing. The game will probably be a financial succes for Big Ben. So that hopefully means the game will keep getting supported and we will see some more tennis games in the future

The launch of Tennis World Tour is the largest implementation for Bigben, with nearly 500,000 copies distributed worldwide the day of its release. The pre-order level is a historical record for a game published by Bigben.

There is a workaround that you can still switch coaches/agents. Still a bug of course that should be fixed asap.

There will be at least one big patch coming on june 4 normally.

I am enjoying it already a lot more after the new patch. Some good changes. If they had released it like this, the reviews would have been already A LOT better, but there still needs some things to be fixed in my eyes.

- Add online and doubles (normally it would come on June 4)
- Ball not touching the racket sometimes on defensive shots
- The inside out shot should be more user friendly, really difficult now to pull off
- Add a better 'create a player'. Only 10 faces now, no hair options. The options are just really limited now. Also not fun to see the same faces in the game a lot. Take some hints of AO tennis here, that's one of the few things they did a really really good job.
- Referee's voice could also be a lot better
- While finally have crowd is great, it could a lot more distinctive still.
- Players should make some noices, grunts. It's quite strange to never hear a tennis player make a noice. Should be easily added
- Ad sliding on clay, maye some marks on the dirt
- Fix the McEnroe commentary. I saw someone do a good suggestion on the FB page. Just put the most radio friendly voice in the studio for a whole day and make him say hundred of lines. And just add McEnroe as co-commentator and let him do then those lines. That could make sense. With only the lines of they have right now of McEnroe the commentary can't be really fixed.
- Players should have a more distinctive play style. Most of them play in the same way. You should have players that always come to the net, or stay far beside their baseline, etc
- Playing only one event or training in a month in carreer doesn't make much sense
- Add Roland Garros in the game. You have made a Roland Garros especially for the eSports tournament, why can't it be in the game?
- ...

Wow, where'd you get those sales figures for the game?? I do agree on most of those points though....they've built a very solid foundation for this game.

Official press release send out to different French gaming outlets

No, if it was sold it would mean they probably had distributed something close to a million copies. That would be crazy for a company like Bigben

I'm assuming that the 500k figure was counting shipped to stores in Europe.....yet the physical copies aren't released until June 4th. Makes you wonder why they were shipped at initial release, but not actually released for another 2-3 weeks.

They definitely rushed the release for Roland Garros.

In pretty much every European country Roland Garros is shown by Eurosport.

The Eurosport name is literally plastered all over the game on every court so there's obviously a huge marketing deal going on there, especially since Eurosport have ads of the game during coverage.

I checked out the game page on the PSN Store and the add ons/microtransactions etc are fucking bullshit in this game. I've been playing tennis for 25yrs + but I think I'm steering clear of this nonsense.
