I'm actually quite upset, more upset than I was when I learned that ORAS was ruined by the casual gamer market and felt miserable during my entire time with the game. Here's a rundown of my whole reactions to the game, since I actually was pretty hyped at first until just now.
Pre-reveal: "Oh goodness, a kanto remake? Urgh, well, I grew up with Yellow and that was great, but it wasn't that long and it's not that fun to play. FRLG were the hardest in the series though even though the lack of a pre-GSC Johto was a huge mistake. Maybe they'll fix that in these games and also add the national dex they cut from Gen VII for some stupid reason.
During Reveal, initial trailer: "Oh shit this looks freaking gorgeous! Very exciting and perhaps a return to form after being in the dark age of Pokemon games for nearly 5 years now. Hopefully Pre-GSC Johto or at least something cool and new will happen, right? I wonder how Espeon and Umbreon will be handled! The Pokeball looks like a modern Pokewalker, the Pokemon Go game is already a great way to exercise and catch mons, and the potential for a great post-game with national dex or Johto stuff is there! I can also ride on my beloved Articuno!
Upon learning that there's no wild pokemon battles: "Oh shit, this may mean legendaries are actually hard to catch... And there's probably gonna be some more trainer battles and thus it'll be akin to the GCN RPGs in that regard, right? Sounds interesting..."
Upon learning that the games are $60: "wait what i know they're console games but they better be beefy in that case Kanto's only 10-20 hours long at max and only a bit more to catch the 151, but if there's a national dex or a battle facility it won't be too bad I guess
Upon learning the game only focuses on Kanto and Alolan Mons: "Wait fuck no GF stop before you crash and burn you have the chance to fix the sin FRLG made ages ago with pre GSC Johto it's TO THE LEFT OF KANTO TURN LEFT"
Upon learning that by "Alolan Mons" they mean only the alolan forms of the original 151 GF pandered to so many times we've lost count: "Fuck no nononononononon but at least it would make online battles interesting and a post-game facility requiring a bit of a different strategy to complete compared to the past"
Upon learning that they chose the 151 mons to pander to the Genwunners/Early Go audience: "See, everyone thought I was insane when I said that casuals and Genwunners were slowly ruining the franchise, like with XY having too many Kanto refs and ORAS being dumbed down beyond belief and made into the Sonic 06 of the franchise but nobody believe me! Still, at least there's a chance it'll be fun with online friends."
Upon learning that Gen VIII is in late 2019: "That's great! If they're working on it since before the switch launched, that means these games can be excellent and fantastic and not a rush job like Gen VI, but with how SM still lacked a national dex despite nailing other aspects I'm very worried... But at least this will be a good holdover game."
And finally, upon learning that there's no online: "FUCK YOU GAMEFREAK, You somehow made me more pissed off than when you ruined hoenn and made my heart break into trillions of pieces and hate you for two years before SM leaked and gave me some hope for once. How the fuck do you not include online in a game that desperately needs it, especially if the game's so short and is SIXTY DOLLARS TO BEGIN WITH."
Seriously, good god... Spinoffs being different I don't mind, PSMD is my favorite game of ALL TIME for crying out loud and that's a spin-off, but I still remember how the Pokemon fanbase rebelled because it wasn't Z and they missed out on a damn good story and the best Pokemon game on the 3DS because they can't handle a year without a main series game. And I guess because of that instead of taking a gap year and going all into Gen VIII, they're working on a spin-off that doesn't even manage to include fucking online so I can play with friends considering how it's a HOME CONSOLE GAME or even do things that could make true fans happy by throwing them a bone for the post-game while making the main game set for the newcomers/genwunners. But this... It looks fucking gorgeous, so good, yet they somehow managed to screw it up. Even Colosseum/XD without much of being able to catch more than 40/50 pokemon had a beefy post-game with Mount Battle and the rewards it included. There may still be hope for that but knowing GF lately I doubt it, and if they do include it, they probably won't include easy ways to level up your Pokemon.
Never change Gamefreak. Might as well let Spike Chunsoft develop Pokemon games from now on, they clearly do a better job than you at storytelling and making more engaging experiences overall, even though I think the PMD series should stay ended with PSMD due to the climatic story, I can't help but feel using their other spinoff partners except for ambrella to work on games like these would work better.
