Getting the new wireless keyboard is some weird Twilight Zone fuckery. Finally! A full wireless keyboard! Oh wait, it's so fucking shallow I keep messing up >:(

I'm bummed cause I was super excited too.

I mean I guess I still have my old wired keyboard, plus an extra Avid wired keyboard, and the non-number pad last gen wireless keyboard... But having lightning cable charging is so nice

The current Apple Wireless keyboards have a decent amount of travel. The may look like the MacBook's keyboards, but they certainly are not in the same league, they are far superior. In terms of slim membrane keyboards, this one if my second favorite, right beneath the Microsoft Modern Keyboard with Fingerprint ID.

Just got a preowned 38mm Series 2 Apple Watch. Setting it up, installing watchOS 4.3.1 and yo what's with these update times for a fucking smart watch.

It's the way it is. I think part of the reason is because it needs to do it extra safely, since you can't recover the Watch in the same way as other devices. But also there's an inherent slowness to the CPU and wireless data transfer. It might get better with each generation but I don't even mind it anymore since my Apple Watch usually updates as I sleep.

That makes sense. Started off at 10 hours(!) before slowly creeping down and settling at 1. This is kind of an impulse purchase but I was looking into getting a new fitness tracker anyway, was still using an old Jawbone UP I got a few years ago. Was going to get the 42mm one but changed my mind and went for the smaller once because I don't really like big watches too much.

I think it's a really good purchase for that purpose, congrats. Also, going for a run/walk with just it and some bluetooth headphones playing straight off the Watch is a bit of a revelation. I find it relaxing because you're disconnected from your phone and constant notifications but you're still listening to music and tracking your activity. And you can even stop by a grocery store and pay with apple pay.

And when you're connected, getting notifications straight on the wrist is a cool comfort that you quickly get used to.

Oh you don't even need the phone on you to use Apple Pay on the watch? That's pretty cool. I've got a pair of Beats X so I'm already sorted for Bluetooth headphones.

Yeah you don't even need the phone or internet. But I think you need to have passcode enabled on the Apple Watch.

Installed 11.4 and turned on iCloud for Messages. It doesn't seem to syncing/deleting messages from my watch when I delete them from my phone. :-/

Man, I hope they finally add CallKit call support in WatchOS 5. I hate having to pull out my phone for that. Is this such a niche feature?

It's not supported on watchOS or macOS yet, both need software updates. The Mac one is in beta and will probably be released in a few days, no idea about the Watch but I'd imagine it's the same scenario.

So can Apple Watch pick up WiFi on it's own? Or does it pull WiFi from an iPhone?
It can pick up 2,4GHz Wifi that you've logged into on your iPhone before as long as it doesn't require any confirmation on login. It never really worked for me though. I guess it's the DNS (PiHole) I use that throws it off.

Oh so the apple watch doesn't pick up secure WiFi on it's own that you have used before on your phone? For example one that requires a security cert. Good to know. Thx.

Normal WiFi with password is fine. Not WiFi that has secondary login - eg pops up a web page

So let me ask you this.

If I had an LTE Apple Watch and it was able to pick up my work WiFi that requires a config profile on my phone and has many subnets across a large area. Then would being on WiFi on a different subnet than my phone mess up my ability to take phone calls on my LTE Apple Watch?

Ah if you need a profile installing on your phone then that probably won't be accessible on your watch.

But they don't need to be on the same network - they just need to both have internet access (assuming here not close enough to use Bluetooth). I left my phone completely at home one day by accident and was still receiving messages and email notifications on my watch at work all day.

If your watch is LTE then it can use that instead of your work wifi

No, as long as you have a connection it's fine, WiFi calling (which is what the watch uses, even on LTE) doesn't require you be on the same network.

That said if your work WiFi needs a config profile your watch isn't going to connect.

So the backlit Apple logo on my 2012 MacBook Air has suddenly started to bleed into the center of my screen. Obviously I'm way beyond the Apple Care warranty period and it's not worth paying out of pocket to fix. Here are some pics (not mine) of how it looks. This is such a stupid issue that I'm not even too mad, I find it funny.

Hopefully there'll be some nice MBP upgrades at WWDC in a few days.

Yep, I've been using Mac laptops for like 20 years and never heard of that issue until it happened to me today. I went to clean a smudge in the middle of my screen and it wasn't coming off, then I was like wait a minute... that's the damn Apple logo bleeding through. lol.

Are you holding a really bright light behind it in both of those pics or something? The logo gets lit up by the back of the backlight in the screen so you'll always see it if the screen is dark or dimmed and there's a very bright light behind it. I sometimes notice the same thing with my MacBook Air if I'm sitting at a window with bright sunlight.

That's hilarious. No wonder they stopped making them light up.

It looks like you have a very bright light reading light pointing directly at the Apple logo in that second picture.

It looks like this filter is gone:

So light is bleeding through.

it has always been possible for this to happen with the air, even new out of the box, if there's a light source behind the screen. there's nothing wrong with your air, that's just the way it is.

If no one else claims it/makes it by Monday morning PST I'll do it. But I promise you this: it will have the bare minimum of effort put into it

Got a new MBP from work today. Yes 2 working days before they're likely to be refreshed. But the IT manager said when they get new starters I can probably sneakily swap them over if the new ones are assumed to be quad cores.

First impressions are the keyboard is very shallow - this is coming from a MBA where the keyboard was really nice. Trackpad I can't even tell it doesn't have a real click. The screen is lovely - about 1000x better than the MBA.

It does make my 1080p monitor look low res though now. And the sizes don't match up - although the MBA was lower res, the dot pitch seemed to match up ok. What do you need to match a 13" retina screen? Something like a 24" 1440p monitor I'd guess.

220+ PPI is what would match the pixel density of the MBPs. But the only displays that match this exactly are the LG 4K/5K displays sold through Apple.

24" 4K displays from Dell and LG are widely available. These displays will be perfectly crisp at pixel-doubled 1080p, and you can scale them to virtual 1440p for more space. 27" 4K displays are the most common high-DPI displays. I'd run those displays at "looks like 1440p", since pixel-doubled 1080p @ 27" is too big for my tastes.

Meh. I just hope they don't drag out the keynote too long then. Do we know the duration yet?

Really odd to me if there's no Mac spec bumps planned, since ship dates on Apple.com have conveniently slipped to just after WWDC for several Mac models (which usually indicates a pending refresh).
