"A listening party took place for the album on May 31, 2018, in Jackson, Wyoming, with West broadcasting a livestream of the listening party through the WAV app. The listening party invited a variety of guests, such as Chris Rock, Ty Dolla $ign, Kim Kardashian, Kid Cudi, Lil Yachty, Nas, Pusha T, Desiigner, 2 Chainz, Candace Owens and others, and the album title was announced."

It's cool that Kanye is coming to terms with his mental illness and using his music as therapy, but this shit don't slap and I don't feel like I needed to hear this. Been a Ye fan since the Roc days but for me, this ain't it.

I don't think he is though? He contextualizes his comments in relation to his mental disorder, but still almost feels like he embraces that type of behavior while acknowledging the consequences it may have. I don't sense a regretful tone, especially with the George Jetson/Jefferson line right after that: he still believes in his BS, but his ways of expressing them get questioned.
Right, and that's my problem with this record. It feels less like a lamentation of his bipolar nature and more like it fetishizes it. It feels disingenuous, like that TMZ interview where he got called out, only for him to just double back down on his "bro I'm sorry I hurt you I love everyone" routine, as if he's some misunderstood soul.

Which, to be fair, glamorizing his issues has been his M.O. for the better last couple of years.

Weird because I think it's very thematically focused. Like that's it's best strength.

I don't really agree with the score, but this is a well written review:

https://www.theguardian.com/music/2018/jun/01/kanye-west-ye-review-good-music

Good review.

THIS though:

You might hesitate to say that Ghost Town sounds like the work of a mind in the process of unravelling – the ongoing speculation about the state of West's mental health is lurid and unsavoury – were it not for the fact that West himself spends large chunks of ye telling you that his mind is unravelling. It's hard to think of another major rap album that exposes and dwells upon its star's struggles with mental illness to this extent. West angrily brushes away other people's concerns and offers of support, but then discusses his despairing thoughts of suicide and depressive "bad days" in starkly affecting terms: "Screamed so loud got no lungs, hurt so bad I go numb". Then he brags about it, which feels like a very Kanye response to being diagnosed with a psychiatric disorder: "That's my bipolar shit … that's my superpower … I'm a superhero! I'm a superhero!"

This album is RAW. Like a big filter is removed for Kanye. It's Kanye thoughts unfiltered and he just spouts on and on. It's just apparent that he needs serious help.
It's jumbled and represents his state of mind. I don't really know if that's a good thing. It's a weird situation.

The production is simple and some songs are good.

It's another disappointment for me together with K.O.D and TESTING.

sometimes you have to fetishise a mental health issue in order to attempt to deal with it. also, rap music. fetishising is kind of the deal.

better quality really does this album much better than the stream did. can't wait to get a few complete listens in. Generally positive thoughts thus far.

Exactly.

Nothing redeeming on this tape.

After my 3rd full listen I can appreciate the album but nothing is really catching on for me. Daytona left me with a waaaay better first impression.

I wonder why the 7 tracks though. I thought Yeezus having 10 was the perfect length, something that should have been replicated. :/

Can you let me know where else opinions are invalid? Thanks in advance bruv

just here and KTT. You're welcome bruv.

For the past month the general consensus on this forum was that Kanye was the literal devil and his tweets have ruined his past and future music. Idk if you should pay too much attention to this is all i'm saying. Album literally just came out too.

Been some interesting takes don't get me wrong, but by and large this thread aint it

Is it good? Eso is kind of wack imo but I love Deck

I don't have anything to say about Kanye that prob hasn't been said a ton in the thread, just realize the harm some of you are doing supporting him. Beats on fire is great, crosses on fire not so much. I'm more happy people take a moment to consider it and disregard it than not considering it at all, maybe a seed will be planted that will grow someday

This morning I got half way though listening on that Twitch stream and had to go to work.
When it hit Spotify I listened to it and currently re-listening now.

Man, I dunno. Gah.

I think Nas will drop the best album out of all of these short tapes. If you're dropping a 7 track album, you gotta bring your best. It basically needs to be perfect, you cant have half ass tracks or filler on an album that short. The margin for error is so slim and this ye tape just isn't cutting it for how short it is.
