It is a surprise when you consider that the Directs this year have been really really bad. E3 was their last chance to make things right, and they blew it.

Also Sony and MS have Gamescom, TGS, PSX etc. too, and Sony especially releases high quality games at a fast clip unlike Nintendo these days.
How was E3 their "last chance this year" When we are only 6 months into the year and Nintendo just said they have more surprises in the weeks and months ahead?

It's pretty much going to be like every other year where they drop new announcements in directs after E3 about 2018 games.

Their investors dropped the value of their shares because a lot of them want Nintendo to focus on their mobile game initiative. The direct didn't include any announcements on that front so understandably it dropped. A lot of the investors have been clamoring for more mobile game experiences, their new president is evidence of this. He even mentioned it as a part of his vision for the direction of the company. And anyone who expects this direct to be the end all be all of 2018-2019 lineup clearly doesn't realize Nintendo probably more than other companies is very in touch with letting fans have an idea of their announcements, with a clear idea that they need to drip feed content in a controlled manner to continually have people invested in the switch's future.

The Switch is actually very powerful for a mobile device.
Yes, "for a mobile device". But I don't care about it, I play only on my TV, I want a powerful home gaming console by Nintendo... You can tell me "they won't do it", yes, I know. But I don't like it. I have to buy Nintendo hardwares because I love the games, but I'm not happy as a fan.

And I'm not happy about this E3, the way to communicate, the poor line-up this year, still no achievement system in 2018, no voicechat... So disappointed.

I mean reggie can spin it however they want but multiple youtuber impressions, some of which do a lot of nintendo content, were still disappointed by their showing.

Especially the people who dont play RPGs or stuff like Fortnite.

Smash is huge so i hope they keep that momentum.

Just show me some kind of proper Animal Crossing in the near future and I'll buy your system. That's all I need, that's it.

If Nintendo could release a system on par with the Xbox One X and still make it a hybrid at a good price they would do it, it's just it's going to be impossible for Nintendo to do that on the tech we have now, so unless that changes fast in the future then we shouldn't expect a "GameCube 2" like system for a long time if ever.

And Nintendo isn't going to abandon the hybrid idea since it worked out so well and worth risking to release a super powerful console that might sell like Wii U or GameCube.

Nah, it was a response to a direct question in the interview. It's true that they have utilized lootboxes as one component for content delivery/monetization a la Super Badge Arcade. Just a PR response in my book.
Super Badge arcade isn't really loot boxes cause you see directly what you have a chance to win.

But their successful mobile games have all used loot box gachapon type stuff extensively especially fire emblem

If there's really more to show, that's crazy considering we're getting a crazy amount of games for the rest of the year.

I know some people are a little disappointed over the overall E3 Direct, but Reggie is obviously right about surprises coming soon. Let's not forget that Nintendo loves random Directs throughout the year. Lots of chance for new stuff to be announced for this year :)

once again, Switch options without the dock in Japan are not coming to North America

Seems arbitrary.

As for trying to champion loot boxes, good luck with that. Getting children to essentially gamble (IMO) for virtual goods is not something myself and many others will ever tolerate.

Shareholders need to get through their head that e3 is no longer Nintendo's biggest show of the year.

Nintendo needs to get it through their head that unless they do their own hugely advertised yearly event, E3 is when the most eyes are on the company. They can do what they want for the rest of the year, but as long as they come to E3 and present something like they did this year, they're going to get fan backlash.

Same. I feel like they're prepping for something along those lines...

I would say they already got loot boxes. Breath of the Wild has them, except it's just a one off payment for an Amiibo but you are guaranteed a loot box every day. I actually like this method, buy a figure and periodically get a loot box. You just buy additional figures to speed up the amount of loot boxes you get.

Eh, the mini direct still has 3x number of views on Nintendo's channel.

A direct is just as viable as E3 for Nintendo at this point.
I think it's smarter to go outside of E3. Right now there are so many other companies with buzz, so it doesn't make as much sense to load everything into one big E3 direct when they can do a bunch of other ones throughout the year. We see the way the internet gets when Nintendo Direct is announced, so there's no problem getting attention.

Nintendo has not been using E3 like it used to for some years. They keep a steady stream of announcements throughout the year so they are consistently announcing new games/content throughout the year. Remember their BotW E3?

Lootbox thing is probably just defending their mobile titles. Still weird.

Too late Nintendo

Everyone knows you only get ONE chance a year where the majority of hardcore and casual viewers tune in to see your future potential in the gaming market... it's E3

If you blow it... you blow it for the remainder of the year.

I am of course being facetious.

This is basically PR fluff.

But it's fine. Nintendo will continue to have a good year.

His response to the stock question was good though. Gamers on forums pay more attention to that than they should.

Something does feels incredibly missing from their fall lineup. Gonna make a bold prediction that I'm not entirely willing to stand behind: Nintendo has observed the success of F2P games like Fortnite/MOBAs and is planning to stealth launch a new free-to-play game, with in-game paid content (aye lootboxes/cosmetic whatever)... AND they'll do it to coincide with the debut of paid online.

Fuck knows what, probably something not equal to the hype that suggests haha

So maybe Nintencats, but the cats fight with food

It would be hard for them to keep making games that you love if they go out of business. A "traditional" console from Nintendo would have been dead-on-arrival.

I will say given that most of the titles announced and shown were releasing between now and the end of summer. I did think there would be more announcements for this year. Leaks really dampened surprises like fortnite releasing at the end of the E3 direct. However, September-December look really barren compared to what is releasing in the next few months in terms of the quantity of 3rd party and indie titles releasing. I wouldnt be surprised if there are one or two Wii U/Wii/3DS ports hitting the system in the fall that Nintendo has up their sleeve. Perhaps there is a expanded audience projects like Labo scheduled as well. I dont think their biggest 3rd party titles would hit in summer (Fortnite, Octopath Traveller and Dark Souls) with nothing substantial in September-December. Not saying I'm expecting AAA exclusives but I think more things at least a long the lines of Fortnite, Dark Souls, Crash trilogy, etc. I could see something like this:

July- New Labo project announced for holiday season.

August- New Direct that focuses on 3DS software and Switch Online. New trailer for LGP/E. New character reveal and some new info on Smash Ultimate. New trailer and info for Super Mario Party. NSMBU switch port announced for September. GTAV port announced for Switch. Spyro remaster announced for Switch. A few other third party/indie announcements for later this year. A new title shown off/announced for 2019.

October- Direct that focuses on LGP/E and Smash as well as upcoming 3rd party titles. A few smaller announcements like Metroid Prime Trilogy HD launching in November and a few third party/indie announcements for release in December/January. New trailer for Fire Emblem March 2019. Animal Crossing Switch announced for 1st half 2019.

January- New mini direct. That has a general outline of 1st half 2019 titles.

- Nintendo is a company that loves to surprise fans Definitely see that
- Reggie says Nintendo has a lot more up their sleeves and a lot more to show in the "weeks and months ahead" Yeah, that's what Nintendo usually does, its why I'm not completely shocked with what they showed (Or didn't) at E3
- Reggie says "who knows" as to why Nintendo stock dropped Fluctuations, doesn't mean its necessarily because of E3
- Nintendo wants to tell them about content and then launch it to drive excitement Generic Business talk
- the pacing of news/releases will drive the Switch forward Same as above, and makes sense
- trial events like Mario Tennis Aces let Nintendo learn more about the challenges in network play I hope this means Nintendo will do more of these events. Didn't get a chance to play the demo, but its cool nonetheless for the people who did. Would be cool if they did that for Splatoon 2
- once again, Switch options without the dock in Japan are not coming to North America I feel that this -can- change in the future
- In Dec 2017, 3DS grew by 27% year on year in North America Business talk
- in this year, 3DS business is up 10% in North America Business talk
- Reggie says lootboxes have gotten a bad wrap I don't like this statement. This makes me thing Nintendo is planning something similar, and while I understand why businesses do such a thing, I personally loathe the idea of it
- a gameplay mechanic that offers the consumer something to buy when they're not sure what's inside can be interesting as long as it's not the only way to get those items Sure, but this can apply to stuff like Mew in the Lets Go games as well. Hopefully they let people who didn't spent 50+ (More in Canada) just to get it.
- Reggie believes Furukawa is a great pick for Nintendo's next president I bet he will do just fine
- Nintendo wants to create content that brings people together and encourage the community to go from their with eSports Good mentality to have
- Reggie says the number of analysts who have "gotten it right" over the years is very small People who understand Nintendo, understand that you can't understand Nintendo.
- Nintendo holds things close to their chest and loves to surprise, and they surprise big Same as first comment, and definitely a good way of going with things, shame about leaks though
- Reggie says "don't worry" about analysts Business talk

Sorry if this is long, just wanted to write a bit for each comment.

A new main Mario Party and the first game play of the new Fire-emblem are not small things, add to that a new IP exclusive to the console and a DLC that might as well be called a new Xenoblade Chronicle.Chronicles. And two shadow drops in one conference too.

But Mario Party has been bollocks for years and Fire Emblem is hardly a major seller.

- Reggie says "who knows" as to why Nintendo stock dropped

The obsession with this is insane, and it should only worry to greedy little investors. We know the stock dropped because there wasn't a short term monetization scheme announced or detailed (Mario Kart mobile, Switch online, etc...) It has happened almost every E3 for more than 10 years no matter how good or bat it has been. Moving on

- Reggie says lootboxes have gotten a bad wrap

Lootboxes are, again a good idea that has been tackled badly by the (Jim Sterling voice) AAA industry. Get the monetization out, put it where it matters *BOOM* It's good.

- Reggie says the number of analysts who have "gotten it right" over the years is very small

Yup, and they should stop being news.

A couple of thousands of fans having an issue compared to 20 million switch users isn't going to affect Nintendo.

E3 is nothing short of just a general direct for
Them, hell the January direct was most likely More important to them, people need to come to terms with this.

Yeah, you're right.... the premise is still the same though—you're paying money to roll the dice.

But yes, as you stated...microtransactions & lootboxes aren't new for Nintendo. They just incorporate them differently, and not as often as other devs/pubs.
