If you only manage to catch like 1 or 2 of something that is meta relevant, sure, use what you have. But when we're talking catching things by the hundreds, it absolutely makes sense to start using stats to weed out which are better than others. Context matters.
Oh of course, but when I see people saying things like 14/13/13 ones being trash, it makes no sense as it barely makes a difference

37 Kyogre raids within the current event, far more than I ever did the first time it was around. Still no shiny.

Getting raids done in NYC is certainly way different than my usual suburban haunt. In NYC you can literally just show up and expect to have a random team ready to go at just about any given time. To get any raiding done here at home we have to meticulously plan ahead on Discord. I still get more raids done here simply because I can drive from place to place, but it's pretty high effort and if I miss out on a lot of chained raids by not being available during office hours.

There were 4 Kyogre eggs ready to pop in the city centre after work yesterday.

Unfortunately I had to be somewhere for once.

Broke my heart. Only caught 5/6 in the second Kyogre season.

I have caught over 300 magikarp in the past week and a half, no shiny. Caught over 80 Larvitar during the event, no shiny, the first Larvitar my fianc'e caught was a shiny. I have no luck in any of the pokemon games when it comes to shinies.

RNG can be a cruel mistress sometimes. lol

The rate for wild shinies seems to be about 1/450. So honestly, those 300 magikarps you saw, you only had about a 48% chance of seeing one by now. I haven't gotten any shelder, magikarp or wailmer shinies this event either.

I caught a shiny Kabuto near my office yesterday. Come to think of it, the Kabuto spawned where I once got a shiny Snorunt - my second ever shiny - back in December.

Also, it wasn't the exact same spot, but a few weeks ago I caught a shiny Omanyte in the parking lot of the same office. That Omanyte was weird in that a coworker who was also leaving the building at the same time also got the exact same shiny. That usually doesn't happen.

Maybe with the new Friendship coming very soon, we should set up and share our trainer codes with others here when it becomes available. Obviously we can't do trades, but we can send gifts to each other. Would be neat to receive a gift from around the world.

Also, I've been wondering about maybe setting up our own Discord Server as well for us all to chat about the game / etc. Our own little Era Pokemon Go Community. Any interest?

To be quite honest, Pokemon Go already dominates my list of Discord servers, but I only ever read the one local to where I am with any regularity. I don't think moving discussion of the game from this forum to Discord would serve any real benefit, and in fact I would probably participate less frequently as a result.

Most of the Discord servers I am in that were populated by forumgoers here saw a lot of use in the time before Era launched but died a pretty quick death once the forum was open to everyone.

So um...do I need to be at a specific level before I start getting King's Rock drops at PokeStops? Cause I'm at level 25 right now but I haven't even gotten one yet. And I need two for my Slowpoke and Seadra.

Also, where the heck does everyone get their shiny Magikarp?! I've captured countless Magikarps throughout the Water Event and have yet to see one. But it seems like nearly everyone else around me has either a shiny Magikarp or a shiny Gyarados.

Just RNG luck. You will get one eventually, just will take time. You need to try to catch several hundred to help increase your chances.

Also, are you spinning a pokestop every day? On your 7th day streak, you will get a random evolution stone.

I don't think there's any level requirement for the evolution items. They are just very, very rare drops aside from the guaranteed one on your 7th day streak spin. I think it was over half a year of spinning a Pokestop every day before I got one of every item. (King's Rock was one I kept throwing away because I kept getting it over things I actually needed!)

As mentioned before, it seems the rate for a wild shiny trends towards 1 in 450, so you just have to get lucky. That rate is so low that I wouldn't even bother going out of my way to hunt for it.

No specific level requirement. They are just very rare drops. But you are guaranteed one evolution item from a 7-day streak spin, so your best bet is to keep getting that streak and eventually you will get a couple King's Rocks from it.

Shiny Magikarp has been in the game the longest (since March 2017) and so they are one of the more common non-Community Day shinies out there.

Hmmm, I hang around with locals now and then but none I really feel like friends with. I guess people will ask around regardless. I meet some people regularly so we could trade, but we also have basically the same ones, and we don't do stuff together that will raise levels.

The biggest problem for me will be stardust. I've never had a ton of it, and I only reach something like 40k after a community day. It will be hard to save up for a trade when I could level up my stuff to be more competitive in raids.

Didn't think I could do it playing casually the past two weeks but I have enough candy to evolve Wailmer and Magikarp.

Now Swablu on the other hand...

I have well over a thousand candy for all three 400 candy evos, lol. I wanna try for 2,000 Magikarp candy before the event ends tomorrow, pretty much just because. It's way more than I'll ever need, but I never get any nests around here and there are very few local water biomes, so generally most of my captures are from the random spawns that started popping up from time-to-time ever since the Mew quest went live.

39 Kyogre runs this event. 0 shiny. Might try to go hard on evening raids tonight because it's coming down to the wire now.

you missed out on when Swablu was introduced into the game months back, the damn things were everywhere. I had enough candies to evolve one within like 2 days, no joke. everywhere.

I got shiny Magikarp and shiny Wailmer during this event.

Strongly doubt I'll get shiny Kyogre or any shiny Legendary ever, but I've thankfully stopped caring about that. Going for my 9th Mewtwo today, so that gives me an excuse to do a few more Kyogre raids before they go away. I've only done 4 during the re-run.

Sucks that I'll have to hatch a bunch of crappy 2km eggs before I start hatching rare stuff again, but this event has been pretty cool. Patiently waiting for Gen 4.

EDIT: Got yet ANOTHER EX Pass for a Gym in the same park. Holy crap, Niantic.

My friend talked me into playing Go again after pretty much a 2 year break.
I'm pretty much caught up on all the new stuff, but what are the EX Raid passes you guys are talking about?
Do I get them as a gift randomly? Also, do you use them on any place that's fighting a Raid to get Mewtwo instead?

EX passes are earned by completing raids at gyms in parks (denoted by a darker green area on the map) and sponsored locations (Starbucks and Sprint in the US). A random pool of players who have recently completed raids at a random pool of qualifying gyms are given those passes weekly. EX raids themselves occur at a fixed time and location (the location of the gym that granted you the pass), and the EX raid pass is required to access that specific raid, and only that specific raid. The pass itself will show up in your inventory, and generally should pop up as a notification (in-game, and in your mobile OS if you have notifications enabled) once received, and will have a link to your Maps app for directions to the gym.

So for example, if I complete a raid at a local Starbucks, I may get an EX raid pass for Saturday at 1pm at that Starbucks, and a random pool of other players will have gotten the same pass. If you miss your raid window (45 min) your pass expires, and cannot be used elsewhere.

Currently, all EX raids are Mewtwo.

All Starbucks and Sprint stores? So if I see a Raid at one I should go do it no matter what?

Some Starbucks and Sprint stores are PokéStops rather than gyms, but all gyms at sponsored locations are EX eligible, yeah.

If you're dead set on grinding them out, then yeah, it's definitely a good idea to hit them up as frequently as possible, but just remember you're never guaranteed. Not all eligible locations will grant EX raids every single week, and even if you completed a raid at a gym that ends up having passes sent out, you may not be in the pool of players who gets it. So it's all about increasing your odds.

I will say though, some people have observed that certain gyms in their area appear to grant passes more reliably than others. It could just be RNGesus and confirmation bias, but if you can find a local Messenger/Slack/Discord/etc.. group, they may be able to point you towards apparent hot spots. This is a good idea regardless, since it means finding raid groups for harder raids, and with the friendship system rolling out any day now (which will grant additional raid perks for friends) it's a good time to start talking with folks.

I'm genuinely convinced child accounts are given better legendary catch and shiny odds than normal accounts at this point. Is there any research into this?

I've been getting back into this game recently and I'm reminded how much it sucks to play in the suburbs.
