I should play Uncharted 4 and TLL back to back some time this year. Even if the pacing wasn't the best, it's still a damn fine game.

Well, when you use such ridiculous hyperbole, I guess.

I understand not liking Uncharted 4. There are great games I dislike too.

Saying it's "terrible" is false.

I mean, for me it was terrible. That's not to say it's a poorly put together game or others can't enjoy it, but it was a chore for me to finish and I have no plans to ever replay it. It's not what I wanted out of an Uncharted and felt like it tried harder than ever to be
"cinematic" as opposed to a game.

Didn't it also get GOTY on GAF?

It's simply a strange vocal minority of people who dislike it. The game will always be known as one of the all-time greats.

That happens a lot, especially on this forum and a few others. The minority you speak of is often very vocal and generally very hyperbolic too, sometimes even straight immature and ridiculous, eg with posts like this.

Ah, UC4. A decent movie, terrible game.

This feels so strange to me. I would think that the biggest issue with U4 would be that it's "more of the same." I mean, it's Uncharted. It plays like Uncharted but with better gunplay. It certainly had as much "gameplay" as 2 and 3.

I don't really understand that one.

The pacing is the worst in the series. There are moments where you do nothing but climb and talk for like 30 minutes. I enjoy the game, and when it actually allows you to shoot people it plays better than the other ones, but it's not as good as 2 and lacks the HOLY SHIT moments of 3 (still probably the better game though).

Precisely.

It's as I said, Uncharted is not suited for any kind of slow pacing. When the game slows to a crawl it only reveals how shallow the narrative and characters are. And, it's not like Uncharted's puzzle or platforming has ever been in-depth either. So, what you get during these moments is overtly long and drawn out conversations between paper thin characters, on-the-rail platforming, and puzzles for babies. It's only when the shooting starts that things become interesting again, but I also find the pointless sneaking mechanic to detract from that. Uncharted isn't Metal Gear or Splinter Cell, stealth really shouldn't be an option. But, the game attempts to include a half-ass type of stealth that only serves to diminish what should be elaborate combat arenas.

All of these slow paced elements worked great in TLOU, but they just do not help Uncharted in any way. Again, Indiana Jones never became The Road or Kramer v. Kramer. Uncharted should have refined its gunplay/combat, amped up the pacing, and stop trying to act like Drake is some wonderfully complex and deep character. He isn't. Just focus on making a fun, adventure story not whatever UC4 was.

I love the slow moments in Uncharted so I guess that would be the disconnect.

I also think the gunplay was noticeably improved and it had one of my favorite stories in a video game, period.

My favorite of the series, honestly.

Favourite game this gen for me.

I suspect it'll stay that way until RDR2 or TLOU Part II.

I saw this trailer the other day and it is super hype

It also made me think that we truly don't get amazingly epic trailers like this anymore. Everything seems to be on the side of spoiler minimisation which kind of sucks because nothing is better than a truly well done trailer

This also makes me want a new over the top Uncharted game. Feels like a bit of a void in the genre now, especially as TR is trying it's best to be more like TLOU in seriousness

Read my post again, and listen to Druckmann's words describing Uncharted 4.

The explicitly stated that they tried "OMG HOLY SHIT" Uncharted moments for 4 but that they didn't work because the game looked so realistic is just got less and less believable. Plus Drake was older, plus the hardware was newer, etc, etc.

Hence they made a conscious decision to have more 'intimate' set pieces. They were up front about that. And they totally nailed it.
The problem was that by Uncharted 3 they felt like they were in an arms race to up themselves on the last epic set piece. Falling out of a plane, catching a moving parachute and surviving doesn't leave a lot of room to go one better. I was on the side that they needed to pull the reigns in a bit. But now that they've done it I'm sort of on the team of just go over the top

WRONG about stealth

Having that is what truly made the combat dynamic, allowing you to really get around the environment and engage the enemies how you see fit. It took the combat from being singularly focused, usually one way to approach a combat scenario to being open and dynamic

Don't get why you want developers to aim so low. Drake was still the rogue-ish wise cracking quipper that we all know and love. "You have something I want and you're going to give it to me" "Well I'm married so..."

They just explored him and his relationships in meaningful ways. With Drake and Elena's scenes there's an authenticity they nail, that I think most AAA developers wish they could land. I think it was fitting for the finale to give it the focus and attention it got.

I'm glad they didn't go the "eh this might be too much for our audience, we're straying too far from safe the AAA space" route. I think as the audience for this game is a little older now, they'd appreciate how the characters reflect their struggles.

It was still a fun blockbuster adventure. They managed to do both. All the heart underneath and attention to detail with the characters really separates it from the pack.

They never turned him into a deep character. It was purely playing into the "coming out of retirement" trope and not much more. Tying in some of his history and his relationship with Elena which has been a story thread throughout four games.

Going with your Indiana Jones comparison - amping up the adventure combined with a coming out of retirement story didn't exactly help that franchise did it? Uncharted didn't really need a nuke the fridge moment

Damn how Uncharted 4 looks outdated to TLOU2. But this trailer is great.
I hope he makes a TLOU2 trailer like this.

U4 is a great game, i agree the Scotland chapter was boring but it more than redeemed it self on the island, probably the most breathtaking level i've ever played

I thought U4 was comfortably better than GoW, and it was also my own personal favourite in the franchise. LL didn't really do it for me.

That trailer was indeed great, almost made me forgot that I found the game just good. The pacing, lack of combat to previous games, over extended walking sections, and a super unsatisfying conclusion to the whole pirate adventure makes it hard for me to understand how others can outright love it.

Uncharted 4 is a great game that could have been terrific if it fixed the pacing and added at least one more crazy set piece. I think Lost Legacy fixed a lot of those issues.

Still, there aren't many series that have had a fourth entry that was just as good as the original trilogy. Mgs4 is the only one that comes to mind.

Take out the Scotland chapter and Uncharted 4 is just as good as UC2 and Lost Legacy to me. Shame they couldn't work out the stamina meter due to the troubled development.

Great trailer.
I will always be bummed the crane set piece was taken out at the last minute. I'd have waited another month or two for that to make it in the game.

Don't listen to this guy. Mgs4 had some incredible setpieces, boss fights and story moments most goty winners simply can't match nowadays.

The story and presentation weren't lacking in the game, it just needed more action.

That was FIRE
I gotta do a Crushing run through. Even though Lost Legacy was head and shoulders above 4 IMO, I still really liked when we got to Libertalia.
