It''s not really about moving up. It's more about learning how to read the curves instantly. With way too much Mario Tennis experience, you will eventually find yourself automatically returning crazy curves without even thinking about it.

Moving up helps but in many situations you can't really do that. :/

Thanks. I guess I'll just have to grind it out and gitgud. :)

For Mario, it seems like there's no point of using a slice? It doesn't seem to curve at all.

Im referring to actual full sized tournaments like older tennis games had. And not having the proper sets/matches is such a terrible idea.

Bummer, I was going to buy it but going to pass on it

A few times in the beta, I'd get a far-side to far-side volley going and then suddenly just hit it straight ahead and watch them still run the opposite way. It only worked like once per match, but it was amusing. :)

GameXplain's review and follow-up videos didn't help the game's case at all for me. I play games predominantly offline/solo, and usually just get aggravated playing online matches. I don't have the time or patience to "git gud" to the level that's required for a good chance of winning.

Just beat the second boss in adventure mode. Seems like the single player mode ain't all that long and can be beaten within a day or a couple of days. Will eventually get more practice with the other characters, but I need to toggle off all the different courts for me to get the court I want, which is annoying.

none of the mario tennis games had it, atleast not as a option outside of free play, it was always 1 set. 2 games for tourament mode, and you know why cause it would be boring as hell spending hours in the same damn match

and no i dont believe you were ever gonna buy this game,

There's no reason to not include the option for accurate tennis matches.

And no tennis game you spend hours in one match, that doesn't even make sense

It's not that its lacking a good story mode, which it is, it's that it's lacking in everything. Unless I'm missing something obvious, why can't I play tennis in the format that tennis actually exists? Like 6 game sets, 3-5 set matches?
The game lacks options, which is something I'm definitely not arguing. And again, I can see how this would affect someone's opinion on the game. But I don't think, personally speaking of course, the options lacking in Aces turn a great playing tennis game into a 60/100 game. That's just my opinion, of course, and I don't intend on forcing it on anyone.

the hyperbole surrounding this that I've seen is kind of ridiculous. Yeah, it sucks the options aren't there, but the game itself and gameplay are still really, really fun. I'm more of a 'lets give nintendo a chance to respond or patch things' than immediate and harsh damnation over the fact that you might have to do a few matches in a row instead of it autoplaying the next games. Of course there should be options for that, but to say it completely ruins the game is rather harsh

edit: that being said, I'm disappointed to hear about the single player, but I can't say I'm surprised. everyone was getting the hype up to be some kind of camelot return to form back to the GBA style (which I loved), but realistically it was probably never going to happen. Is the story mode we have still not a lot more than the last few games? It's a step in the right direction, no?

There are offline tournaments like the old games, Mushroom Cup, Flower Cup, and Star Cup are all there.

Free Play (offline) just doesn't allow you to do the super extended sets you could do in the old games for whatever bizarre reason.

Online I could sort of understand not offering it just because, as it is, best 2 out of 3 sets can take quite awhile as it is if both players are good enough. That said, I'm not saying they shouldn't have it because it being an option... is the reason it's an option. If people want to have 40 minute matches online, let them have it. People who don't want to play those super long sets can still enjoy the standard the game already provides.

the fact that you whining about matches being too short without even knowing how long a full length tennis match can be,

btw, a full length tennis match in a major tennis match is best of 5 sets which require 6 games to win a a set

Just from what I'm hearing overall it's pretty bare bones which is a bummer. If Nintendo patches things in I'll definitely purchase it, and I might even still pick it up just to see. But I was wanting a deeper single player experience is all, not really interested in online aspects that much

tournaments are solo
Yeah, i understand that but you can't set up tournaments?

Like, lets say me and 8 friends wanted to compete in the same tournament we can't because Nintendo apparently doesn't understand fun multiplayer modes.
This game should have been priced like Rocket League.
I'm starting to feel that way the more i play it. I mean, i guess i shouldn't be too surprised after the Wii-U game. Singleplayer feels rushed, repetitive and boring. The most basic ass multiplayer options and no way (as of yet that i can tell) can you customize clothing, rackets etc. Hopefully Mario Golf will come out and save us.

this is honestly all I asked from Camelot, that and the online working
the mechanics of this game are insane, it's one of the best sports game I have ever played, maybe the best period
Camelot previous games were so disappointing in that regard. Sure, you could always play without any rules and it would be the same gameplay as in the original Gameboy game, but this title is one of the few entries where the new mechanics actually add a lot to the gameplay. 3DS and WIi U versions weren't good with that, you'd have to go back to GBA to find another Mario Tennis game on that level.

As a single player experience, yes, it's not great. They could have added more and should have, even if previous titles (outside of the two older handheld titles) also didn't have very many single player modes. Camelot seems to think Tennis should be multiplayer focused while Mario Golf should be single player, just look at the difference between Mario Tennis Open and Mario Golf World Tour on 3DS. The former had no actual single player story mode while the latter did attempt a single player mode akin to the older Tennis titles (it's not exactly the same but it's clearly inspired by it to some extent).

Tennis always seems to suffer because it's the first one Camelot does for a console/handheld and then when they go to do Golf... Golf always seems to have more content at the baseline and more features. Hell, World Tour on 3DS even got DLC golf courses featuring courses from 64! Mario Tennis Open, meanwhile, got nothing.

Can someone tell me if this works? The online options seems a bit confusing for doubles.

Can I invite a friend online that's playing on his own switch to team up with me and play against random online opponents for a doubles match? I see there's a invite friend option but I'm not sure if it creates a room for just us to play or if it would allow us to play against random online human opponents.

Just wanted to be sure because my friend wants to buy it just for this feature.

I'm hoping and thinking they'll get a patch in eventually here, but I might still ultimately buy it. I just wanted a game that had a ton of single player aspects to work on and have fun with, I used to play online for years with top spin back in the day and played VT plenty, and I just always enjoyed the single player stuff more as you have so many people that exploit online tactics to the umpth degree so I lost interest in online tennis.

But we will have to see what they do with it going forward.

So I can't play 2 randoms if I team up with a friend online? Only if he's on the same switch as me?

Can the two of us play against or with CPU partners?

To be fair there hasn't been a real big licensed Tennis game in 7-8 years (not counting mario or the fire trash games that recently came out Tennis World Tour) and this game is big on tournaments. Is it really hard to add a lobby to allow friends and discord groups to setup a tourny? or at the very least put in the most basic fucking sports feature to allow friends to be on a team to play online against other people?.

It just seems this game launched a year early and is missing half it's content. Don't get me wrong the gameplay is fantastic and it's better than Mario Tennis Wii-U but it's just lacking so many basic components that going into a sports game.

Yeah, hopefully, they address a lot of complaints regarding content/features online and the options for offline play and don't just patch the game with the one character every month. Hopefully the patches involve addressing issues or adding to it.

You can only do this in friend's lobbies (so Doubles with friends). You cannot do it to where it's you and a friend (online) vs 2 randoms.

So, my copy comes tonight. Do I need to unlock courts in SP or no? I'm having some people over for a tourney. I'll start trying to work through the SP as soon as I get home so we have some court variety tonight.

Not to mention, in past games the tourneys did eventually use 5 set matches for the later tourneys. Not sure if they ever did 6 games tho, but the option should really be there. Long matches mean maximum salt afterward which means maximum fun! Short matches have wayy less salt output in comparison :/

You cannot do doubles with randoms with an online friend. You can only do doubles Solo with randoms or with a local friend (so two on one Switch). The option for the latter, I believe, is Team. If you select Team and set up a friend room you can only do doubles with friends; it's a private lobby.

So I have a big family and friends who come to play, will I get more value from this title (got it at a slight discount)? Or should I join the "This game is a ripoff!" wagon? I played the demo, liked everything, like the character options and don't care about a 3 hour story mode and was actually hoping it was shorter and just to teach me how to play the game better (the demo tutorial was terrible).

Hey y'all, I was thinking about getting this for my family to play against each other. Two kids ages 10 & 4 who both play arms, Mario odyssey, Mario cart, and zelda no problem. I've got joy cons and a pro controller. Is it easy enough for them to pick up and play against each other and fun enough for me to play against them too?

Impressions appreciated

The option just needs to be there as you said.

I just feel that at least sets should be 6 games like normal. So few games in a set just seems very unsatisfying, at least to me.

Standard matches needs more hand-eye coordination than Arms and Mario Kart but if you enjoy motion controls I think Swing mode could be fun for family. It's really like a sports and fighting game hybrid

Reddit posts (and earlier posts in the review thread) seem to disagree with this. However, it's through free play > online > solo > invite friend > search for players > doubles only

Damn y'all making me bum since I'm about to start this. Sounds like y'all think it's not worth the price.

I'm worried.

100% worth is, game is great. Could use some more content for single player but this is a multiplayer game at heart. Hope they roll out content splatoon style with the monthly tournaments.
