It's just timing/proximity. If you have to reach to get to it (resulting in a weak return) or if you mistime your shot, it appears.
The game is unplayable because of the lag. Every single match. I have 1 Gb connection. Can't believe Nintendo will be making me pay for this experience.

I'm in NC. I would not consider a wired connection, because for me, the Switch is a portable console first. After hearing people say online improved since the demo, I'm here to say it definitely has not for all.Are you wired? I am on 100MB connection and currently using Wifi(2.4ghz) cause my ethernet adapter doesn't get here till tomorrow and even then I have had a magnificent experience online for the most part. Where are you located?
I tested this earlier and I don't think this is the case. Unless it's a fully charged shot. If it's just normal shots I don't think this happens if your timing Is right. It is also based on what you counter with the colored shots. If you counter, say, red with purple a star is going to appear for the opponent. However, if it's red vs blue (you countering with blue) the star shouldn't appear for them.
I understand your frustration, but 1 Gigabit wired as a metric is almost meaningless unless you're reliably getting that rate with low ping and low packet loss through wireless to the servers involved. If your network does experience those problems, there's little or nothing that can be done to correct it by outside games, unfortunately, so it's hard to say without more data in my opinion.I'm in NC. I can't express how disappointed I am that it's not possible to party up with a friend online on another switch and play doubles against randoms together. Not holding my breath for a miraculous update when 'Nintendo Online' eventually launches either.

Unfortunately it's definitely not possible. Wish I was wrong!I'm not 100% but I saw a post somewhere that you can do this, it's buried under Free Play or something. Don't have the game yet so I can't check myself!
i beg to differ my online experiance has been smooth were as i had problems with lag during the demo.I'm in NC. You had to actually take part in the online tournament. How do I unlock the demo Mario outfit? I didn't finish the tutorial in the demo if that makes a difference.
Ok. This might not help, but occasionally with this game I seem to just get nothing but 1 or even 0 bar connections. Nothing changes on my end with my connection, it just seems to happen after a while. Only seems to fix itself by fully restarting the Switch.I've not had any problems with gaming before on this connection.

Lots of people played that beta for 72 hours straight without taking a bathroom break.Jesus man. How is everyone so fucking good at this game. I am getting destroyed online.
Yep.So I see some characters in the story mode that aren't in the player list. Are these artificially locked from me and will be unlocked during tournaments the next few months? Doesn't seem like story mode unlocks characters, and winning a CPU tournament in star cup didn't give me anything at all...

Lots of no lifers from the beta. Like having 60000 points in two days? Probably played nonstopJesus man. How is everyone so fucking good at this game. I am getting destroyed online.
I know the feel bro, I can't get past ten semi-final in the tournament always end up getting destroyed. Need to learn to properly block specials on servesJesus man. How is everyone so fucking good at this game. I am getting destroyed online.
the problem is your router,I'm in NC. I would not consider a wired connection, because for me, the Switch is a portable console first. After hearing people say online improved since the demo, I'm here to say it definitely has not for all.

Same. I don't even have a clue of how to counter people who get instant Aces or can hit a curve ball 90% of the time, especially with Boo. I can see myself falling behind on the skill tree very quickly. Not fun at all, for online, unfortunately. I think I'll trade this one back in. Disappointed. :(
Chain Chomp main here.Best way to beat boo is to play the corners and charge the net. Most of the people I've played against fold into knots when their cheesy slice doesn't work cause I am on the net.
Oh man. That's real dumb.I can't express how disappointed I am that it's not possible to party up with a friend online on another switch and play doubles against randoms together. Not holding my breath for a miraculous update when 'Nintendo Online' eventually launches either.

Think I am settling on using Daisy as my main character. I refuse to use Chomp or Boo, I feel dirty winning with either.
I was thinking about buying this but I can't compete online so I am wondering if there's enough content for someone hesitant to play online.
Oh man. That's real dumb.
How does Nintendo continue to drop the ball with online features in 2018, after all the criticism they've gotten since the Wii?
I'm really worried Smash Ultimate is going to suck if you don't have friends.

Try to incorporate some drop shots, and then sparringly rush the net to control the angles. Then if you rush it, anticipate the lob, rush back and spike it in their face.okay I need some help because I just had the most bullshit fucking match. Trying DK for the first time, he's supposed to be a 'powerful' character but he has the slowest shots in the game by far, holy shit. no matter where I aim, my opponent can reach it, with ease, from anywhere on the map. even if I counter how they're playing, or where they are standing, it takes no effort for them to return the ball. wtf is going on here?
just finished an infuriating match against peach, which I barely won, but my gyro wasnt working at all, and neither were half my shots. I don't understand. there was definitely some lag but nothing big, but the gyro just wouldnt work nor could I aim where my power shots went. really not fun.
I guarantee you all the really nasty players have been playing Mario Tennis since the N64 days or played a ton of Power Tennis on the GameCube. This game plays very similar to Power Tennis minus the zone shot system so once you play for an hour and get the hang of that you feel right at home already.
This is why charging for online is bullshit coming from Nintendo. I don't care if it's cheap, I don't care if I get crappy NES games. I want robust online experiences, god damn it. This isn't the Wii.Zero's streaming the game and he's rushing the net without ever getting punished with a lob shot. Lmao.
Yup, same thing will happen with Smash, fundamentals are all there, people with prior experience with the series will obliterate newcomers.
Hence why Nintendo should implement a better matchmaking system instead of having bullshit worthless systems trying to act like this isn't 2018.
Oh man. That's real dumb.
