Think I am settling on using Daisy as my main character. I refuse to use Chomp or Boo, I feel dirty winning with either.

It's just timing/proximity. If you have to reach to get to it (resulting in a weak return) or if you mistime your shot, it appears.

It is also based on what you counter with the colored shots. If you counter, say, red with purple a star is going to appear for the opponent. However, if it's red vs blue (you countering with blue) the star shouldn't appear for them.

I can't express how disappointed I am that it's not possible to party up with a friend online on another switch and play doubles against randoms together. Not holding my breath for a miraculous update when 'Nintendo Online' eventually launches either.

The game is unplayable because of the lag. Every single match. I have 1 Gb connection. Can't believe Nintendo will be making me pay for this experience.

Are you wired? I am on 100MB connection and currently using Wifi(2.4ghz) cause my ethernet adapter doesn't get here till tomorrow and even then I have had a magnificent experience online for the most part. Where are you located?

I'm in NC. I would not consider a wired connection, because for me, the Switch is a portable console first. After hearing people say online improved since the demo, I'm here to say it definitely has not for all.

I tested this earlier and I don't think this is the case. Unless it's a fully charged shot. If it's just normal shots I don't think this happens if your timing Is right.

I understand your frustration, but 1 Gigabit wired as a metric is almost meaningless unless you're reliably getting that rate with low ping and low packet loss through wireless to the servers involved. If your network does experience those problems, there's little or nothing that can be done to correct it by outside games, unfortunately, so it's hard to say without more data in my opinion.

I've been fortunate with having good connections only even when playing it mainly in portable/WiFi. What's the bad connections like in this game? Heavy input delay or stutter/freezes?

I'm not 100% but I saw a post somewhere that you can do this, it's buried under Free Play or something. Don't have the game yet so I can't check myself!

Played for a couple of hours, really awesome! Both modes have been pretty fun so far, I thought all the arcadey additions would be too wacky but they somehow still feel like tennis.

Online wise all smooth, California, wifi, 100 MB. No issues at all.

How do I unlock the demo Mario outfit? I didn't finish the tutorial in the demo if that makes a difference.

I've not had any problems with gaming before on this connection.

What's your NAT type?

You had to actually take part in the online tournament.

I've not had any problems with gaming before on this connection.

Ok. This might not help, but occasionally with this game I seem to just get nothing but 1 or even 0 bar connections. Nothing changes on my end with my connection, it just seems to happen after a while. Only seems to fix itself by fully restarting the Switch.

So I see some characters in the story mode that aren't in the player list. Are these artificially locked from me and will be unlocked during tournaments the next few months? Doesn't seem like story mode unlocks characters, and winning a CPU tournament in star cup didn't give me anything at all...

It's a huge fuck up. Me and my friend were pumped for it. I thought we were going to get stats and rankings and now nothing at all. Can't say I'm surprised they would screw it up. I mean, there's not even a doubles tournament.

I really hope more stuff gets added in later besides new characters.

The only way to get a decent online experience is if you only accept 4 to 5 bars connects for matchmaking.

So are defensive characters ending up being the best choice so far? I ended up preferring that play style during the demo after cheesing easy wins with Rosalina

Jesus man. How is everyone so fucking good at this game. I am getting destroyed online.

Same. I don't even have a clue of how to counter people who get instant Aces or can hit a curve ball 90% of the time, especially with Boo. I can see myself falling behind on the skill tree very quickly. Not fun at all, for online, unfortunately. I think I'll trade this one back in. Disappointed. :(

So, just played more online matches, apart from a solid netcode, I can sense the difference between styles a lot more than in the demo, at least between tricky and technical characters. Peach's precision is nuts, definitely better in a long rally situation than Rosalina, didn't perceive such a big change during the beta. I'll keep juggling more characters to see who fits me.

Also, is it just me or the overall pace seems slower? I feel like everythings about to ramp up and it doesn't hit the speed levels it had from back in the demo too. Not complaining, I actually like it like this a lot more.

Best way to beat boo is to play the corners and charge the net. Most of the people I've played against fold into knots when their cheesy slice doesn't work cause I am on the net.

Oh man. That's real dumb.

How does Nintendo continue to drop the ball with online features in 2018, after all the criticism they've gotten since the Wii?

I'm really worried Smash Ultimate is going to suck if you don't have friends.

I guarantee you all the really nasty players have been playing Mario Tennis since the N64 days or played a ton of Power Tennis on the GameCube. This game plays very similar to Power Tennis minus the zone shot system so once you play for an hour and get the hang of that you feel right at home already.

Boo isn't even very good. He's terrible defensively (poor speed, low range, and bad trick shots) and easy to neutralize offensively. Chomp is solid but there are better characters.

Now Bowser Jr... there's a character that seems pretty dumb.

okay I need some help because I just had the most bullshit fucking match. Trying DK for the first time, he's supposed to be a 'powerful' character but he has the slowest shots in the game by far, holy shit. no matter where I aim, my opponent can reach it, with ease, from anywhere on the map. even if I counter how they're playing, or where they are standing, it takes no effort for them to return the ball. wtf is going on here?

just finished an infuriating match against peach, which I barely won, but my gyro wasnt working at all, and neither were half my shots. I don't understand. there was definitely some lag but nothing big, but the gyro just wouldnt work nor could I aim where my power shots went. really not fun.

I was thinking about buying this but I can't compete online so I am wondering if there's enough content for someone hesitant to play online.

Don't you mean the contrary? Because without friends you'll be able to play normally. lol It's the same here, even if here the problem is that you can't play with a friend against randoms (you can against a friend, I did today)

Jesus man. How is everyone so fucking good at this game. I am getting destroyed online.

Yup, it's much more difficult than it was in the demo. Today was pretty difficult to me and I lost most of the matches in comparison to yesterday.

Try to incorporate some drop shots, and then sparringly rush the net to control the angles. Then if you rush it, anticipate the lob, rush back and spike it in their face.

Playing a power character, you will be slower than everyone else, but you have stronger shots if you charge them. So you have to try and charge anything you safely can. The big equalizer with power characters is the trick shots. You have slower movement, but that is basically a huge freebee to fly across the court, negating one of your only weaknesses.

It's still tough though. This is by far the toughest tennis game I've ever played.

Zero's streaming the game and he's rushing the net without ever getting punished with a lob shot. Lmao.

Yup, same thing will happen with Smash, fundamentals are all there, people with prior experience with the series will obliterate newcomers.

Hence why Nintendo should implement a better matchmaking system instead of having bullshit worthless systems trying to act like this isn't 2018.

This is why charging for online is bullshit coming from Nintendo. I don't care if it's cheap, I don't care if I get crappy NES games. I want robust online experiences, god damn it. This isn't the Wii.

They're only charging for online because everyone else is now. They won't provide better services.

I DON'T KNOW! And how do people try and downplay it sometimes? Nintendo needs to step up with online features. The voice chat solution still baffles me as a switch owner.
