What triggers refilling your SP and health gauge? I've seen it happen twice in the middle of a dungeon but I'm not sure why.

The art style is so beautiful, too damn bad about the insane difficulty level which will never make me want to play this game

This is interesting comment I am not very good at say a Dark Souls type game but this game I haven't had any issues with the difficulty.

What character did you pick? I played Cyrus and never had an issue.

Talk to us! We can help you dude! This is my first really traditional turn based JRPG (well apart from Final Fantasy 10) and I haven't hit a difficulty wall yet. Then again I've played a lot of RPGs and am quite familiar with these sorts of mechanics so maybe it came more naturally to me. Very happy to give you some tips though - who did you start as and what's your normal strategy?

It's my first JRPG since FFX, and the only issue (if it can even be called that) was having to use quite a lot of healing items against Olberic's boss. Is that the norm?

I've had to break out healing items for pretty much every boss I've fought, yes. Honestly, I like it. I'm the type of person who hoards items and never uses them. I've found that Octopath both showers me with healing a boost items, and also demands that I use them generously when needed. That seems like a pretty good balance to me! Kind of in the same way that SMT / Persona games actually force you to use buff / debuff spells for bosses, when typically, those types of spells just go to waste.

After you get your party set up you should be able to heal via magic.

Other tips
make sure you go to shops and upgrade your gear
defend some turns if you are taking too much damage.

Defending is a good idea when you are working up points to spend
Olberic is pretty much a pure bruiser/tank so him going first does end up on you munching healing items everyone was this way in their first chapter really
If a boss is about to do a big attack break them if you can't make sure you are blocking

Is it out in 2 more weeks?

A little over two weeks. Friday release.

The art style is so beautiful, too damn bad about the insane difficulty level which will never make me want to play this game

People have chimed in on this already, but I suspect the game will be remembered as too easy, not too hard. There's just so, so much freedom in terms of being able to get higher level gear early, thanks to the Path skills and simple exploration, that there's not a whole lot keeping the players from getting stuff several "tiers" ahead of the curve.

I saw somebody on twitch do some absolutely insane damage with Tressa's Hired Help skill.

Yeah, there's
  1. Tons of ways to get gold with various Path skills to get money to pay for the top-tiered Hired Help.
  2. Primrose being able to randomly summon a giant boss to punch to enemies with her crazy RNG skill.
  3. 100x JP or 100x EXP in the list of things that Primrose can randomly get.
  4. Caits (Metal Slimes, essentially) early on.
  5. Save scum Therion's stealing to grab great shit.
  6. Sell Therion's grabbings to fuel other habits.
  7. Multiple higher-tiered dungeons with good loot even on the small, low-level loop around the sea that connects towns.
  8. Save scum Primrose's seduction to get really powerful stuff early on.
  9. Who knows what else!
So, so much shit is really, really powerful, and we have no idea whether the game's difficulty curve accounts for any of this or not. There's almost no precedent for open-world, turn-based JRPGs without any level scaling. Best analogy would be... Metal Max, maybe? Which is a giant mess.

Have we finally decided whether this demo is a legit take at the real game? Or are some things blocked off in the demo that we suspect would otherwise be available in the full game? It's what's holding me back from starting the demo. Thanks.

That might be purely for demo purposes just to give you an idea of how things work.
I'm sure they would have thought things like that through given the development time and talent behind the game.

Looks neat.

I have not played a rpg like this since ps2 era.

I hope it's an easy romp and I may just bite.

Unless its overly complex with its systems, item management and character skill tree/uses etc.....

Anyone have any insight?

It's a legit take at the real game at least for chapter 1. Im not sure if you can do any of the sidequest *though you can start them* and paths that lead to later game areas are blocked off

There was only one area that the demo didn't allow me to proceed, saying it wasn't available in the demo. But it was some high needed level area

Thanks! I think I'll just hold off. Not too much longer.

So how many copies of this do we need to buy to get Chrono trigger or final fantasy tactics in this engine?

Nice catch! There are quite a few tracks in the player. Definitely a phenomenal soundtrack; they totally nailed the tone they were going for.

Most of the soundtrack has been ripped and uploaded. Truly excellent OST from top-to-bottom.

What's the consensus on the quality of the demo/game so far? Interesting to navigate? Engaging and non-repetitive battle system?

The battle system is... fine, but it's difficult to gauge in the demo since it only encompasses the characters' starting areas, and those areas are specifically designed/balanced around having a single character in the party, so enemies are usually weak to that character's specific abilities and weapon set. So it's difficult to see how the game will feel once you have a full party and are in an area that isn't really designed with one character's abilities in mind.

There are some more difficult areas you can go to in the demo. Some mobs in those places can easily kill you if you're not prepared.

Music is superb, and I really like the combat. Not a fan of the aggressive bokeh. I really wish that could be adjusted. Text size in handheld mode is also a bit smaller than I would like. Anyway, still not sure if this will be a day one purchase, but it's now a stronger blip on my radar (it wasn't really before).

Playing this early was a huge mistake. I really, really want more. I might have to get this day one. Hopefully there's a sale on eshop points soon

Is there a consensus on who's the best starting character ?

Everyone has their uses. Cyrus is good if you want lower encounter rate and finding enemy weaknesses every fight. Therion is good for stealing in battles and in towns to get potentially strong equipment early. Others are good too. Just try out the demo and see what you like.

Best girl is H'aanit. I think a lot of people like Primrose for hey special? Idk, I've only played with H'aanit and Ophelia in the demo.
I've read that I can only play the demo for 3 hours tho.. Is it enough to try out all 8 characters ?
