This announcement was my highlight of E3 and it was worth every penny.

Best 15 dollars I have ever spent.

Wish them all the success in the world.

A year or two ago when SteamSpy was still able to access info more easily, I was paying close attention to Steam indie releases and generally speaking, selling 100k or more in your first month placed you in the top tier of indie successes. Selling 250k on a single platform in half a month places you in indie mega-blockbuster status.

Can you imagine how hopeful news like this probably make the little indie studios who put all their love and passion in their games, now knowing that there is a hardware were people actively seek for these little gems instead of being gulfed in the sea of high profile games these days.

I don't need to imagine. I'm crossing my fingers so hard for our Switch release and news like this gives me hope. I'd be pleased even if we only got a tenth of these figures spread out over the course of a year. :)

Fantastic game that is perfect on Switch. Just played 6 hours on a flight and it was amazing.

One of the best metroidvanias I've played.

Great price too at $15.

The Switch is the perfect indie machine. Every indie game should release on it.
Hope that happened so the indie honeymoon on Switch would be over.
If a relatively unknown indie game like HK can sell 250k units on Switch only at some point one has to stop and think just how much money is Nintendo leaving on the table by not releasing a port (or remaster?) of Mother 3. And HK doesnt have two decades worth of Super Smash Bros hype and hordes of fans evangelizing people since 2006!
What the fuck are you blabbering about. Hollow Knight at Switch release is NO WAY "relatively unknown". The surrounding buzz and word of mouth that it has gathered since release is akin ti Demon's Souls; a very recognizeable title among gaming circles which only the mainstream press barely talk about. In fact, by Reggie's own wording during the reveal he pretty much implies that the game has a strong following before it release on the Switch.

Let's not act like Hollow Knight is a buried gem on Steam and then somehow got saved when it is released on Switch. That is some revisionist bullshit over there.

That's incredible news, and absolutely deserved. Hollow Knight is a gosh darn masterpiece. One of the best games I've played in the last 10 years.

Team Cherry with Hollow Knight joins Yacht Club Games and their Shovel Knight as another great example of a successful kickstarter campaign.

My theory is that Switch owners' hunger for new games will never stop, simply because we get A LOT of playtime, compared to stationary consoles. It's so much easier to get done with a game on Switch. So we just keep buying them lol

I just checked their Kickstarter campaign and they really didn't get much funding, I wonder why. Was it the Australia factor? Lack of press connections? or KS fatigue?
Regardless, glad it worked out in the end.

I think Hollow Knight's KS campaign came about when a lot of that Comcept/MN09 stuff went down and people realized they invested in a turd, so KS funding was significantly depressed in the video game category because of it until 2015 when Igarashi went to the platform and people decided their fear of Kickstarter was smaller than their desire to send a "fuck you" to Konami by funding his Igavania project.

Not enough, if you own a Switch and haven't played it on PC, this is the game to get.

Only Indies and Nintendo exclusives on my switch, and because of that I've played games that otherwise I would've never played like Crypt of the necrodancer or Stardew Valley, I will totally check out Cosmic Star Heroine when releases on August, wish you the best of lucks.

Hollow Knight really needs to be the next indie superstar cameo character like Shovel Knight. The character has a really distinct silhouette, already has a weapon and moveset, etc

They really could have sold this for $20-25 but I hope this shows that there are also benefits in pricing games lower as it makes them more of an impulse purchase. I think the price point definitely helped sales, though I think it was poised to do good regardless.

Not a huge fan of Metroidvania games nor punishing game mechanics seen in the Souls series, but I've been playing an hour or so a day since last Friday and have been enthralled by the sense of wonder and mysteries in this game. I've barely scratched the surface and yet I have already met some fantastic characters and fought against hardened foes. I can see upon completion, that Hollow Knight will go down as one of my top 10 favorite games of all time.

Much like BotW for me, the sense of discovery and intrigue of, "I wonder what's beyond that Peak" is unparalleled for myself, especially for a 2D game. This may open me up to trying and beating Super Metroid or playing SotN for the first time. It's rare for me to still be thinking about the game long after I played it, but Hollow Knight has really burrowed into my heart and soul with its charmful characters and stellar world design.

Congratulations to Team Cherry for the 250k, here's for 250k more and beyond.

I have Golf Story, Stardew Valley, and Haolow Knight, which are all fantastic, I'm addicted to Hollow Knight right know.

Which other games should I get next? Thinking of jumping into Shovel Knight next

Just played this for I think an hour. I don't know how early I am in the game or how to gauge my progress, but...

Holy fucking shit. This has to be the best kept secret in the history of the industry. How is this not more talked about? How is this such an under the radar thing still? How was this not nominated for awards last year?

Exactly the same here. I have those games and am looking for more indies on Switch.

Binding of Isaac, Steamworld Dig 2 and Celeste are the ones that come up most commonly.

Edit: lol beaten.

from what I saw everyone that played it last year sang its praises whenever possible and during GotY time were bummed it didn't get more recognition. I think Giant Bomb gave it a name drop at some point as a thing that they saw people were passionate about but that no one played so they couldn't really recognize it anywhere and I know Ben Moore of EZA played a little bit of it on PC and made a video about it and might have given it a shout during GotY season

edit: Kyle also talked about it during a frame trap in january

It was my GOTY last year. It was actually many peoples GOTY on their own lists but you know... the masses love that AAA. A lot of us have done nothing but blast our love for this gem we are a small community but we are loud. I am excited to see it released on more platforms as this game needs to be played by as many people as possible.

It was damn shame that it was only out on PC last year because it would have gotten so many more votes in the ERA GOTY if it had released on Switch then.

When the whole "should PUBG be eligible" debate was raging, I typically used Hollow Knight as an argument for why the concern over games being voted for in multiple years was silly (ie should Switch (and hopefully PS4) owners not be able to vote for it in 2018 because it already released on PC in 2017?)

I think that is an excellent hypothesis.

Edit: Amazing game, just bought it today and absolutely adore it after a few hours.

and now I'm playing it and it's amazing and I feel the need to shout about it lol

I'm actually a proponent of games should only be eligible in their release year (and in the case of pubg there should be an ongoing gaas sort of category to account for those kinds of games) but if Era overall is gonna be as loose this year as we were last year it'll make my list for sure

Well deserved. Hollow Knight was my GOTY of 2017 despite so many other amazing games. It is quite hard to admit, but it dethroned Super Metroid as my favorite in the genre.

I can tell you right now, I haven't played CSH yet but have heard so many great things. I was waiting for it to finally be announced for Switch. You'll have a purchase from me when it launches in August. And I'm sure there are many more out there like me.

I put 30 hours into it on GOG shortly after it launched and adored every second. I haven't played any of the additional content they've put out for the game since then. Once Gods and Glory comes out I'm planning on running the game again. If they ever make a physical version of the game I'll happily give them more money.

It would have been my most memorable game of 2017 and a couple years before it combined if it hadn't also been the year I first played undertale. Still, it's easily one of my all time favorite games. Even if that physical version never comes, I'll end up with a switch copy sooner or later.

It's just weird because I heard almost no talk of this game for GOTY considerations last year from the media. How can this game be so amazing, but missed by so many? Other indies type of games got their kudos.

This is a good thing. If gaming and games in genres could never surpass the games that created or influenced those genres, then the medium would be painfully disappointingly stagnant

We should want that. Yes, hold classics in high regard, but as fans of the medium, we should desperately want games to dethrone those classics, to improve upon them, to learn from them and do things better, to lead to new classics to further influence future games. Gaming as a whole often has a very stagnant view of classics and their influence on genres. Look at the "immersive sim" and how 99% of them are just following the same molds created by Deus Ex, Thief, and System Shock 2 from 20 years ago (Part of why The Occupation is really exciting). Or how CRPGs are so heavily in the mold of Baldur's Gate and still mostly try to fit traditional combat into their designs (Part of why Disco Elysium is really exciting)

Just hearing that this game is a great port is enough for me to drop down the money to finally buy it! The Switch couldn't be more perfect for these types of games!

I want to see them take this revenue, add some more equally talented staff, and see what they can produce next. I wish Nintendo would just buy them and have them produce the next 2D Metroid or top-down Zelda. I know it's pie in the sky but a boy can dream.

Is there a chance I could like this game even if I'm not a fan of Metroidvanias? I just could never get into axiom verge or any of the Metroid games. I did enjoy cave story though which I suppose has some metroidvania elements
