I'm not liking it as much as I expected.

The mechanics of the maps, especially, are making me very bitter

It's the one misstep in game design. It works in Dark Souls 1 because the levels are more interconnected, but here they're more separate and easy to get lost in. On my second playthrough now I'm just looking up the maps til I buy them in-game. It's more fun.

Cracked this game open on a 3 hour flight and it's amazing so far. Despite seeing lots of videos, the atmosphere (art and music) is incredible, and it controls so well.

As someone who doesn't play a lot of games in the genre (my last was Guacamelee), and who usually over-relies on the map, the mechanics are just enough to make things challenging and interesting. I'm frequently lost and afraid, but never so much that I'm guessing what to do or frustrated that with some patience and practice I can beat the next boss.

I'm still very early on so I hope that balance holds up, but I love it so far

I'm hoping that being lost 24/7 is normal for this game.
So, I played this game for like 8-10 hours on PC and never got back to it for whatever reason. I'm playing it on switch, got deeper than I was before and holy shit. I hit a phase in my travels where I was just stumbling through new "no map" zones nonstop and I had unequipped the compass too.

I was lost as shit and it was awesome. However my desire to ocd 100% was attacking me harshly as I had to leave some areas unexplored due to not seeing a bench for like 8 years.

Once you buy the shop items that allow you to fill in the map with save points, and the charm that shows your location, it gets much better.

Seems like it was done intentionally to force people to explore at the very beginning. Explore and try to collect around 300-400 of the currency and it will get much better.
I've already done it. I still don't like how it works, I would prefer it to be like in the rest of metroidvanias

So I have the PC version, played it upon release, beat it then forgot about it. I see this comes with all the expansions/add-ons included. Were they free on PC? I don't see an option to purchase them on steam and don't see anything notifying me that I have them on Steam. Was considering purchasing this on Switch. Would like some clarification if any one knows.

Yep, they're free and should've been delivered as updates to your steam copy

Yes everything that is on Switch is also on PC free of charge.

86% at 22 hours. It was a great game. I dont see myself going through the steel soul mode considering I died often

Just beat the game - what a ride. Completed at 76% at a little under 31 hours. In the course of one playthrough yesterday, I went from absolute elation at probably the best I've ever played
Beating the second Hornet fight on my first try feeling pretty comfortable the whole way through until the very end (where it got very dicey, as I was trying to heal not knowing that I was only a couple of hits away from victory and took two hits unecessarily)

to absolute despair
I died to Traitor Lord what felt like around 30 times, at least (reached a point where I stopped yesterday, beat it after a handful of tries today). I didn't bother counting my deaths after a while. With the (supposed) assistance of Cloth. Never once did I feel like I couldn't beat the fight though. A perfect example of a fight that I considered hard but fair. Easily the biggest obstacle that I overcame in the game, and by the end of the fight, I picked up on far more nuances on this boss's patterns than any other. I actually didn't think I did all that much more damage to him on the attempt where I finally beat him, so I feel like I must have been pretty close on quite a few occasions, falling just short of the finish line.

I know people say he's easy to Shadow Dash through with the one charm that deals damage while dashing, but something about his speed, the amount of time it takes for the dash to recharge, and his occasional "backwards hop before charging forward gave me fits and prevented me from being able to consistently dash through without taking damage. Sometimes I felt like he;'d use his orange scythes when I was fairly close to him which always surprised me. What an immense feeling of relief when Cloth finally clobbered him on the head.

Agree with I've seen a lot of people say on this thread about the final boss
Pretty straightforward and kind of underwhelming. I expected to die way more than once, especially recently coming off of Traitor Lord. I still don't think I really know the boss's patterns all that well and that's just the thing - you don't really need to to beat him. And unlike Traitor Lord, plenty of opportunities to easily heal in this fight, if and when needed.

Bravo, Team Cherry. What an amazing experience. Thank you for creating such a wonderful game. I don't know if I'll have it in me to get the full completion percentage, but I'm certainly going to keep playing a bit more - which is something I almost never do once the credits roll.

If you want that challenging final boss, consider going for that true ending. You'll have to learn patterns and moves there

That's because that fight is kind of a prelude to the actual final boss, which you fight when going for the true ending :)

Ah I see. Not surprising - I figure that this involves
Unlocking the second half of that charm
I'm not sure I want a challenge...just that I expected one =]. I'll probably give getting as close to full percentage the good old college try; not sure if I have it in me.

Using the Pro Controller has completely changed this game for me. It's like I turned down the difficulty. It's actually enjoyable now!

This game makes a horrible work in explaining you what you are supposed to do

Otherwise looks great

This is complicated. On one hand, the game is downright germophobic when it comes to holding your hand.

On the other, there have only been a handful of times in this massive game when I didn't know what to do, and I usually just...figured it out. When in doubt, go explore a blank spot on the map or return to a character who sent you on a quest. The audio/visual cues for progression are there, though subtle, with for example

the essence particle effect twice clueing you in on what to do for the true ending
.

I only think it was once I needed help here (someone told me to cycle through a character's dialogue---they didn't start out saying the thing I needed to hear).

It's no different than souls games, once you get the map and a few other items from the shop, you can easily explore new places and getting to the required area which everything will make sense then.

Holy shit. I've been playing this on and off on Switch in between sessions of Titan Quest and Destiny 2 on PS4, and holy shit, I just blew 40 minutes on some tough-as-nails spike+centipedes+pogo-bounces environmental puzzle for a nice but ultimately questionable reward. I wonder if the game has a double jump, and if so, if it would have helped immensely there. Because damn. Only saving grace was the Homeward Bone (Dark Souls) trick to a very nearby bench with hot springs. Otherwise, I wouldn't even have bothered. Now to figure out how to get back to Zote, now that I have the map for this place, finally...

Very impressive. I started posting questions about where to go in this thread because I had no clue where to go/what to do, even with a decent number of paths to explore.
It turns out I needed to go to Deepnest, and I would have never found the entrance behind the breakable wall from Fungal Wastes without looking it up. Ditto for the hidden wall in Deepnest leading to the Nosk fight. I know that hidden walls are a staple of the genre, but I hate it when they hide such major things

After beating the game, at the moment, I still have no idea about the following which I've seen others mention:
Location of the Collector Boss
Grimm Troupe stuff
Dream variants of bosses
The Dream Warrior's graves for the 3 I apparently missed - Elder Hu, No Eyes, and Markoth
White Palace
Path of Pain
The Hive area
Some key that's supposedly in Queen's Garden and what its purpose is - The Lovers Key, I think it's called.
Finishing the charm that beating Traitor Lord gives half of/obtaining the true ending; though I'm guessing there's some overlap between these and the above

I try to keep outside aid to a minimum when just trying to initially beat a game, unless I feel absolutely stuck, but on the once in a blue moon occurrence when going for a 100% after the credits roll - it's absolutely open season for me. I'll probably be back on this thread asking for pointers on any/all of the aforementioned sooner rather than later, if I don't find a guide with clear enough explanations.

I'm absolutely floored that between missing charms and known missing upgrades and couple of miscellaneous things, my percentage would be in the mid 90s by my calculation, even with all of this missing (I know the final completion ends at 107, but still).

Is there a way to view how many grubs I currently found? Or do I have to manually count?

Which do I count? Only the ones on the foreground or do the blurred out ones in the background count?

There are 46 grubs in total. All the ones in the background count too. Down the line you
may find something to track the remaining ones down

How the hell am I supposed to predict where
Grey Prince Zote's
falling attack lands? It hits me regardless of where I go.

Essence grinding is no fun.

I've opened up Black Temple, should I go ahead and try to clear it or is it a save until the end thing. Still have a few areas to get to.

This game! Just bought it yesterday afternoon...had a couple sessions throughout the night.

It didn't fully click with me until late last night though, and I stayed up until 4 am playing in bed. I'm so hooked on this game, one of my best gaming impulse buys already!

Sorry, I didn't mean to brag, I just wanted to communicate that I thought the game did a fine job of clueing you into the way forward. However, I don't have a lot of the stuff you list (I just unlocked the conditions for the good ending, haven't seen it yet), and am also constantly floored at how much is left!

The black egg temple is the end of the game.

I can't beat the damn watchers. It's the first time I've been fully stopped. I have the nail upgraded twice but they keep wrecking me. I did the chandelier trick but it doesn't help when they kill me after I beat two of them at most. I was feeling good about my skills but this makes me feel like I'll never win. Shit.

Damnit, just inadvertently locked myself out of fighting NKG... Is there any way to undo what I've done or is that it?

That's it. The first time around on PC, i made a copy of the save file so I could see both routes. Not so easy to do on switch. I'm going NKG route once I get back to that point on Switch.

That's unfortunate... Most of the reason I picked this up on switch was to play the DLC, odd that they made this choice when nothing else is missable in the main game afaik. Hope they patch this at some point, don't think I'm going to replay a 3rd time for 1 boss...

Picked this up this weekend and am loving it. There was a thread about input lag on Switch but I'm feeling none. I've only defeated one boss so far but it's already my favorite game this year. And I don't mean to slight Celeste, this is just better to me.
