I can't. When I try and run past them they either teleport into my dash and knock me out of the air or else their fireballs literally catch me mid jump and also knock me out of the air. They're ridiculous
You shouldn't try to run past them. Hide behind platforms and move away from them until they teleport away from the path you're trying to get through and then quickly make a move. Always try to keep platforms between you to negate the fireballs.

Part of the problem is that you have to get so close to them, which Longnail/Mark of Pride will help with, and Shaman Stone will also help by powering up your spells.
There is so much more to this game. I could have gone to the "end" hours and several areas ago but I keep finding new stuff. And still have stuff to figure out.

I remember this. I seem to remember struggling there for a little while which lead me going elsewhere first. I actually ended up there earlier than I should have, to the point where I thought I had cleared it. I came back with an upgrade or two and the charged attack from dash followed by another quick hit or two would usually send them off.
I just could not beat them, so I left and collected upgrades. Upgraded my nail to +3, found and used Joni's Blessing, and upgraded Vengeful Spirit. Even then it took me about four tries.
I bought Hollow Knight ~5 days ago after reading a lot of praise everywhere (in threads regarding the steam sale and its switch release, for instance) and man, I haven't binged to this degree in a long time.
What a ridiculously good game. How can this possibly have been developed by a very small team when there's an ungodly amount of quality content. I'm not sure what specifically to praise either, as the game is excellent all around. Game design, storytelling, visuals (especially all these bug designs), sound design, soundtrack and so forth. For now, the few minor issues I do have aren't even worth mentioning, really.
On another note:
I beat Nightmare King Grimm, Colosseum of Fools, Path of Pain and The Radiance today.
RIP my sanity... but at least I did manage eventually.
Game continues to impress. The atmosphere is just amazing. It's the little things that just click and make it so cool, like going to one of your previous hot springs and seeing random NPCs now enjoying it, or a stranger on a bench near a stag station appearing (and hearing the stag comment on him). All these little things build up to some fantastic world building while still making you feel lost and trying to survive in this mysterious environment.
Anyone doing Soul Master who is running into more than two of the teleporting enemies on the way back to the boss hasn't unlocked all the shortcuts. There is a series of switches to hit that let you bypass all or most of the other enemies.

Funny I just ran into this boss and beat him first go but was thinking how much of a pain it would be to get back to him after where the bench is. He is the furthest boss away from a bench to date up into the game cause most have felt close. Also are you meant beat him before the Mantis Lords or do did you need the claw to get to the city.. I can't remember.. (he just seemed pretty easy, but again I guess so are the Lords after you realize the gang up still has a pattern to follow).
Got the first ending last night at about 25 hours and 96% completion. Switch version is great, but it makes me want some kinda joycon pro that won't cramp my hands in portable mode...
The platform parts is probably the easiest. Stay under him and slash upwards and unleash Abyss Shriek on him. He is big and does not flinch/knockback so all hits from Abyss Shriek should register. Do small jumps over the bullets and try to stay on the platform.

I don't have all that much time to play any games at the moment however, I feel like I have done well to reach what I feel like is the halfway mark, unless someone corrects me wrong?
And the halfway mark just so happens to be a big stumbling block at the moment. I think they are called Watcher Knights or something? Those big spherical-looking beetles that pair up and jump all over the place in a rather small-ish room.
I think I killed one or two, but they just keep coming back...
I haven't resorted to using a guide up until this point so, I don't really want to for this boss, but I wouldn't mind a few pointers from you folks, just to help me break through this wall that's brought my progress to a halt.

Also, you've realized that his body can't hurt you right? So you can hug right under him without taking damage from physical touch. I figured you knew but another poster on here wasn't aware of that.

There are 6 in total. Yes they are tough. Try to focus on killing the weakest.
Use spells and charms that focus on making your spells stronger and less costly. Time their attacks and attack between. You have almost no time to heal when there are 2 or 3 on the screen so focus on hitting them.
You can also use charms to increase your health too.
Hollow Knight is the cutest game I've played all year and I played Kirby Star Allies. Aww the map seller's having a nap. Awww the grubs. Awwww the bank owner beatle!
Finally fully upgraded my nail and my charm slots. Time to work on a nice build.

That's the problem, I can't. They aren't keeping their distance, and in the room before the boss room if I try and rush through then there's three of them and they're all spamming fire at me and literally teleporting into the path of my dashes and knocking me out of the air
Like every Souls game before it I'll ask this question: what is the purpose of an encounter you're meant to not engage with? If the intended mode of play is "rush past them" why are they there?
do not rush them, guide them near you and hide your self in a way where there attack cannot reach you then jump out and hit them. If you have the first nail upgrade you can take them out in four hits.
I actually ended up dropping the game last night. I hit a point where I had three bosses available to tackle and all of them were an utter chore due to the absurd spacing of the nearest bench combined with the difficulty.
Mantis Lord, Soul Master, Brooding Mawlek
I know that's not even far into the game but something about that delicate balance between challenge and frustration is off here. It seems most people don't have a problem with it based on this thread but this game is a step too far for me. It's a really impressive and beautiful game on many levels and I'll probably try again at some point but I have no patience for this level of frustration right now.
Actually, what did it specifically is that I watched YouTube guides to two of the three bosses just to see if I'm just maybe under-equipped/leveled but it turns out they're just all a combination of really fast and enormous health pools. I thought I had had these two handled to at least a decent stage since there are no health bars but no, turns out I wasn't even close.
You're a liar. The incredible Fungal Wastes OST track wouldn't let you sleep at night, you fired the game up again last night and proceeded to play for 4 more hours discovering a ton of new shit.
The Soul Master was the boss that first made me drop the game when I was playing on PC. However, I managed to beat it fairly quickly on my Switch replay. The one that stopped me dead in my tracks on Switch was Watcher Knights and I had to go and do other stuff for awhile before coming back. Specifically I had to level up my nail a few times and get more health before finally being able to beat them.
I'm currently at the last boss and I'm going around doing other stuff. I still haven't figured out how to get by the weird black forcefield doors. Also haven't activated the train either.
Good luck! It might take you a while to figure out where the safe spots for healing are, but I think once you're used to the attack patterns and the trajectories of the various projectiles you'll be able to figure it out.
Yeah, the healing boost really helps and I found myself using Nail Arts a lot, so Mark of Pride and Quick Slash wasn't super useful (though it did make the first boss a lot quicker).
Damn, I thought Path of Pain would be easy after Celeste, but that last segment was brutal. It's on the level of difficulty as some of the harder Bsides for sure.
sucks I had to do it twice because I wasn't expecting those enemies at the end lol

The last segment is definitely the roughest because the timing varies greatly from attempt to attempt, unlike basically every other segment. Since you have no visual or audio cues telling you when to start the attempt, the spikes and saws can be at completely different points in their patterns by the time you reach them on subsequent runs. It's kind of frustrating that this is the only segment with that problem.
I feel like I am missing some bosses or something. I really have not run into many so far it seems.
I am pretty sure I missed an area or two already as well. I have always been bad in Metroidvania games of completely missing huge chunks of a game because I completely forgot about a certain path or two.

I said exactly the same here when I tried it for the first time but in the end I came to appreciate it more this way, instead of trying to get the patterns down like in the other sections I focused on feeling confortable with the pogo in every section so I could easily jump between them without caring about timings. The spikes were the most interesting part because it's all about the double jump (if you should use it or not, and if so how long will you press the jump button because you might just need a small boost depending on when the spikes are coming up).
It sucks the section gets locked out after completing it, I think I got addicted lol

I beat the game about a week ago (87% I think) and now I've jumped back in to clear up a few bits and pieces. I got the method to pass through those black energy barriers and found an entirely new area, a big bad boss and a beautiful NPC. I absolutely adore, and find it quite stunning, how this game creates such a sense of exploration and wonderment. I know the surprises will eventually end, but reading about how different characters can meet different fates depending on the order you do areas and constantly uncovering new little quirky scenarios and areas is addictive and spellbinding. Halfway through I considered this one of my top 10 games ever, and the more I dwell on this game's successes, its unique visual identity, its mechanics and its lore, the more I genuinely feel this is an absolute classic and a real gem in the industry.

Look on your map for places you've yet to visit. Use the pins to make sure you'll remember to come back later.
Take your time. There's no need to worry about visiting every corner now. The game is designed to make you backtrack through these places quite frequently.
The best part about this game is that it has always something new to offer, even when you're at the oldest and most explored place.

That's a good point. Particularly the last part where you pogo on a sawblade, then dash and double jump to get under the next one. The timing differences there were quite bullshit because if you weren't on the right cycle with the spikes then you couldn't get far enough to the right to make that dash > double jump part. I enjoyed the timing differences for the rest of that screen though.
