Farmers were already getting fucked from his other policies. All worth it for one corner of one state being lapdogs from Trump i guess.

Good.

Tariffs are stupid, just let globalism happen. The total social welfare payoff is almost always better.

My understanding was that he just signed a memo saying ' we should do 60 billion in tariffs'. The timeframe for actually figuring out what to tariffs and how was 15 days, so we should find out the full damage next week.
ah ok.

Thats enough time for adults to wrangle him. China/EU isn't going to fuck around with this. Hopefully, reality sinks in. Like his Wall.

Most of the truest patriots I know have no problem paying more money for the same or worse goods because our schools are full of godless liberals and only the republican party can fix the crumbling roads and black inner cities.

Funny that I just started investing my money on my own outside of my 401k a couple months ago. The volatility in the market now is reeaallly making me second guess putting more money in there instead of in my savings. Yay, economy!

Official announcement: http://gss.mof.gov.cn/zhengwuxinxi/gongzuodongtai/201804/t20180401_2857770.html

Retaliatory tariffs on 128 US products announced by #China. http://gss.mof.gov.cn/zhengwuxinxi/gongzuodongtai/201804/t20180401_2857770.html

Bad google translation:
As of April 2, 2018, China has suspended tariff reduction obligations on certain imported goods originating in the United States.

April 1, 2018 Source: Customs Department

With the approval of the State Council, the Customs Tariff Commission of the State Council decided to suspend duties on tariff reduction for certain imported goods originating in the United States and implemented it on April 2, 2018.

On March 8, 2018, US President Trump signed an announcement confirming that imported steel and aluminum products threatened US national security and decided to impose tariffs (ie 232 measures) on imported steel and aluminum products from March 23. The 232 measures violated the relevant rules of the World Trade Organization and did not comply with the "security exceptions" provision, which actually constituted safeguard measures. This measure was implemented on March 23 and caused serious damage to our interests. In order to safeguard China's interests and balance the losses caused by the U.S. 232 measures to our country's interests, I have suspended duties on seven categories of 128 imported goods originating in the United States from duty duties on April 2, 2018, based on the current applicable tariff rates. Tariffs have been imposed on the importation of tariffs on 120 items of imported goods such as fruits and products, and a tariff rate of 25% on 8 items such as pork and products. The current policy of tax-free and tax-exemption remains unchanged.

China's advocacy and support for the multilateral trading system and the suspension of tariff concessions to the United States are legitimate measures taken by China to use the rules of the World Trade Organization and safeguard its interests.

EU planed tariffs are well targeted at specific GOP related states and businesses and worked well as deterrents (at least temporarily). Are these anything like those?

Indeed they are.

Story from last week, WSJ: China to Target Trump's Base in Tariff Response

Plans for the retaliatory measures were laid out at a meeting last month convened by China's Commerce Ministry with Chinese importers of U.S. farm products, including China National Cereals, Oils and Foodstuffs Corp., a state-owned food-processing giant. These measures were prepared in anticipation of Trump administration moves.

At the meeting, Commerce Ministry officials sought the companies' views on the effects of scaling back U.S. agricultural imports, the people said. Since then the companies have been lining up alternatives sources—for soybeans, for instance, countries including Brazil, Argentina and Poland.

The potential retaliation is calibrated to hit states that helped elect Mr. Trump in 2016, the people said. Mr. Trump won eight of the top 10 soy and hog-producing states, and seven of the top 10 sorghum states.

I would all but assume so. It is what they did to Bush and Obama.

China(and most countries) tend to use proportionality and political precision as their first counter measures in perceived trade aggression.

The million dollar question that needs answering for how bad this could get, is what will Trump's response be?

That is actually a brilliant retaliation strategy, holy shit. I'm sorry to say this but I hope this hits these enablers hard. Maybe this way they'll learn. People keep saying Trump has the economy going in his favor so who better than turning around that positive thing than him?

Sorry for everyone impacted by this. This could get nasty, so I hope you can set aside a little money now, while things are semi in flux, so you can ride out any medium to long term impact.

And they still have arrows in their quiver. If they really want to hurt us they can put tariffs on soy or stop/slow purchasing of US treasury bonds. Edit: the damage from such moves would be reciprocal as well but that's the type of danger that those involved in a trade war may feel forced into & it's why they're viewed (contra to what trump says) as lose/lose

Trump will just say the Chinese and EU are helping blue states and working against red states, and they'll all cheer for him, like coal workers.

Probably the craziest part of all this is that no matter what happens, Trump and the corporations he's kissing up to can use Fox to simply blame all this on foreigners. A certain segment of the American public will never, ever believe that a white person would do bad things to other white people, and their pride will never allow them to consider they've been conned into getting their rights trampled by people of the same skin color. No matter how bad it gets, Trump is trying to save them from evil colored people.

One of the first things Trump bragged about getting done was USA pork being sold in China. Easy come, easy go.

Looks like it's official:

Bad google translation:

We are officially in Bizzarro-world.
The US are putting illegal protectionist tariffs on Chinese's goods.
Meanwhile, the Communists are defending free trade and World Trade Organisation rules by ensuring their retaliation is merely returning US imports to "most favoured nation" status (i.e. suspending a tariff reduction scheme instead of adding new US-specific tariffs)
