Joe Adalian on the streaming platforms in 2017 for NY Mag: In 2017, TV's Streaming Revolution Made Its Biggest Leap Forward Yet
Amazon Studios has opted not to pick up any of the three comedy pilots that were part of the current fall 2017 pilot season. That includes Sea Oak, starring Glenn Close; Love You More, from Patti Cake$' Bridget Everett and Sex and the City's Michael Patrick King; and Diarra Kilpatrick's The Climb. There is no renewal decision yet on comedy series One Mississippi, and Amazon has yet to weigh in on the future of I Love Dick.
The decision to pass on the three comedy pilots comes as Amazon Studios is in the midst of a major executive overhaul. The pilots premiered on Amazon Prime Video on November 10, just a couple of weeks after the men who had greenlighted them, Amazon Studios head Roy Price and his top lieutenant, head of comedy and drama development Joe Lewis, exited in short succession in the wake of the Harvey Weinstein scandal. Search is now underway for a new Amazon Studios head.
Over the past year or so, Amazon Studios had been shifting away from pilots toward straight-to-series orders. And as signaled by Price in August, the company made a programming course correction with a new focus on big, genre drama series as exemplified by the company's recent big bet on a Lord of the Rings series.
When Amazon entered the original series arena five years ago under Price, the company put its own twist on the traditional development model with pilot seasons that featured the streaming service uploading its completed pilots onto Amazon Prime Video "for all customers to stream." As I reported last month, the streaming service is considering no longer making some or all of its pilots available for public viewing.
Amazon has two active pilots at the moment, also ordered by the previous regime: Upload, a single-camera comedy pilot from The Office creator Greg Daniels, and Making Friends, a multi-camera one from How I Met Your Mother creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas along with Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, marking the streamer's first multi-cam pilot. The latter has cast Adhir Kalyan and Gorogia King as leads.
Uh. Wow. RIP Pilot Season. You won't be missed.
I'm going to try something new with my spring TV thread as a way of keeping things fresh for the new era - instead of doing one big thread that covers Jan-Apr, I'm going to do a new thread each month, for the first 4 months. If people aren't digging it, I'll just go back to the old method for the summer and fall seasons.
Poor Max Landis. I didn't even watch this season though.... I wonder if it actually ended.
It's a bummer because there were only two episodes left :("NOTE: The chart below is incorrect as to ABC's line-up, which replaced THE GREAT AMERICAN BAKING SHOW with a rerun of THE GREAT CHRISTMAS LIGHT FIGHT due to issues with one of the former's judges."
At first I was like, you don't like A Christmas Story?! But then I realized the implications...I tried watching A Christmas Story last night, and lost interest about halfway through. I still think Grease or maybe Hairspray last year are still my favorite Live productions.
No, it should just be for musicals. The fact that no one talked about it means the live gimmick is dead, right?
Lol, no I love A Christmas Story. Watching the marathon of it on TBS every year is practically a Christmas tradition for me.At first I was like, you don't like A Christmas Story?! But then I realized the implications...
THEY DID A LIVE VERSION OF A CHRISTMAS STORY?!!?
I think monthly threads are a great idea.I'm going to try something new with my spring TV thread as a way of keeping things fresh for the new era - instead of doing one big thread that covers Jan-Apr, I'm going to do a new thread each month, for the first 4 months. If people aren't digging it, I'll just go back to the old method for the summer and fall seasons.
Not only will this make my life significantly easier, it also will help to make the latter month's schedules more robust and focused - premiere dates for shows airing in March and April generally aren't available when I make my thread in late December (there are only around 5 things on my spreadsheet for April at the moment), so the schedules for those months have always been a little sparse at first (same with July and August for the summer thread, as well as November and December for the fall thread) meaning I have to constantly update the thread whenever new dates get announced, leaving me to wonder if anyone actually notices because how could they unless they go over the thread everyday with a fine toothed comb? (I could always just make a new post every time I updated the OP, but I would rack up like a bunch of double, tripe, quadruple, etc. posts and no one wants that!).
It'll also be less overwhelming to scroll through the "new tv" section, where there are usually like 60 different descriptions each time. People might be more inclined to actually read through all of them now since there won't be so many! :]
So stay tuned for the January 2018 TV Show Thread or What TV shows are you watching - Jan 2018 edition - thread or whatever it is that I decide to call it, at the end of this month!
It was a musical.
Yeah, it was a family tradition in my house too. We always had it on as the backdrop for my great aunt's Christmas Eve party at her house. But around age 75 my great aunt got too old for this shit and moved the party to a restaurant instead of her house.Lol, no I love A Christmas Story. Watching the marathon of it on TBS every year is practically a Christmas tradition for me.
We may be getting an Office revival...

Vanity Fair: Has A Christmas Story Live! Killed the Live TV Musical for Good? The fact that no one talked about it means the live gimmick is dead, right?
Oh, fudge. A Christmas Story Live! really tanked on Sunday night, averaging the lowest viewership of any modern live TV musical. It's been a short ride for the broadcast musical since 2013's Carrie Underwood-starring The Sound of Music Live! kicked off a trend—but given the low ratings that have plagued networks' recent attempts, it's tough not to wonder whether A Christmas Story Live! might have signaled the end of the format.

And you know what, based on this one song I really hope it did kill the genre (and I love musicals):
I think this is would be the first show that has a bisexual man starring and with an emphasis on his bisexuality.Along with ex-Daily Show writer and Emmy-winner Travon Free, Rae will executive produce Him or Her. The single camera half-hour chronicles the dating life of a bisexual black man and the distinctly different worlds and relationships he finds himself in.
Sweet Life is a coming of age tale of the well-heeled teens growing up in the LA neighborhood. Co-created by Rae and Scandal producer Raamla Mohamed, the duo will pen the one-hour drama.

Based on the comic book by Garth Ennis (Preacher) and Darick Robertson and created by Supernatural creator and Timeless co-creator Eric Kripke, The Boys is set in a world where superheroes embrace the darker side of their massive celebrity and fame. It revolves around a group of vigilantes known informally as "the boys," who set out to take down corrupt superheroes with no more than blue-collar grit and a willingness to fight dirty. Preacher's Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogen are set to direct.

Sad to see it go. Oh well, I guess now Landis has time to guest star on another Best of the Worst Neil Breen review.Poor Max Landis. I didn't even watch this season though.... I wonder if it actually ended.
Yes. It has the same problem as every spy show where everyone keeps betraying and working together but the cast makes up for that.
Thanks, I keep passing it on Netflix and being tempted but never paid enough attention when it aired to know if it was worth bothering.Yes. It has the same problem as every spy show where everyone keeps betraying and working together but the cast makes up for that.
It doesn't end on the strongest note but it actually miraculously got an end and it's overall a fairly engaging show. A bit low budget-ish in that Buffy way but it has enough exciting twists and turns that keep it entertaining. It's filled with some spy story tropes where alliances shift and turn completely on their heads, but at least to me it didn't feel too easy to predict.
