Hello all you wonderful beautiful people who have visited this thread! I know emulation has been a divisive topic especially as of late on here but we really cannot deny the benefits that emulation provides to all of us. From the ability to preserve long out of print games to re-experiencing our childhood classics with all the enhancements our 2019 selves expect from a modern game. Emulation is a beautiful thing and to me it should be celebrated so with that in mind.... let's get going!

1. Emulated shots only
2. No editing the shot after the screenshot is taken unless clearly noted
3. Include the game's name, system, and preferably emulator and settings in your post's subject header or within the post.
4. Limit of 3 images per post
5. All Resetera posting rules apply as well

In order to emulate games you'll need an actual emulator. There are multiple viable emulators for many systems but as this is aimed at being a general purpose beginners guide the ones linked are as far as I'm aware are the best option for their respective systems. So no need to fret if you're favorite emulator is not listed.

Keep in mind in order to legally run a game through an emulator you will need to rip it yourself. There is no other legal way to obtain a ROM and it is not legal to download a ROM of a game you already own. This isn't a dedicated system modding thread so the information I'm leaving here is extremely basic and only based on my limited knowledge of the systems I myself have ripped games for or have researched ripping games for.

WiiU: in order to dump a game you will need a modded WiiU and then software like the DDD WiiU title dumper
Wii: in order to dump Wii games you will either need to mod a Wii or the Wii portion of a WiiU (the process is the same on both). Once modded install cleanrip to the homebrew channel and dump the game to a flash drive or SD card.
PS3: Dump games from a modded PS3 system or with a compatible Blu-Ray Drivestraight to your PC
PS2: PS2 is thankfully incredibly easy. Insert your PS2 disc into any standard DVD-R or DVD-RW drive and use imgburn to dump the game to a file.
PS1: The process is the same as the PS2
PSP:
Go to the PSN store and use the PSDLE tool select the option to output a download link, export to a csv file, and copy/paste the download link into a browser while you're logged into your PSN account. This will get you an encrypted PSN package. You can then use this tool PSN Package Decryptor to extract the ROM from it.

First on a Vita download your PSP game of choice from the PSN store and open the content manager. On a Windows PC download and install the content manager assistant connect it to your Vita and then choose to backup applications from your Vita to the PC. Once installed grab your PSN AID from the folder name (C:\Users\youruserName\Documents\PS Vita\PGAME\foldername) and then input into this website to get a decryption key. Finally download this tool and run it from the command line with the arguments psvimg-extract.exe -K decryptionKeyFromTheWebsite "location\of\game.psvimg" "saved\file\location"
N64/SNES/NES/GBA/Most cartridge based consoles: I'm lumping these together as the process is fairly esoteric and sometimes can require hardmodding your system. However, there are tools you can purchase to rip the games directly to your PC. The best option I know of is the Retrode 2 It can be in and out of stock and currently supports
  1. SNES/Japanese Super Famicom
  2. Genesis/Megadrive
  3. N64 (With add on)
  4. Game Boy (With add an)
  5. Game Boy Color (With add on)
  6. Game Boy Advance (With add on)
  7. Sega Master System (With add on)
3DS: A modded 3DS/2DS and GodMode 9
DS: Same as 3DS
Classic Consoles: All Classic consoles that I know of (Playstation Classic, SNES Mini, NES Mini, Genesis Mini etc) have a working hack at this point and with that hack you can extract the ROM files and move them to a PC for an instant ~20 game bolster to your library.

I apologize for my lack of knowledge of Sega Systems but I do not own any so I've never tried dumping any of their disc based games if someone wants to send me the info I can update this for that.

Just as a little extra incentive to post nice shots I will feature a few from time to time from the thread congrats to all that were chosen :D

How I choose featured shots
1. 3 Shots total
2. No more than 1 shot from the same platform.
3. No more than 1 shot from the same user
4. I won't be posting my own shots in the OP.

Breath of the Wild on Cemu, 1080p nothing fancy. I still need to update Cemu, I'm running something old I think.

I have the game on WiiU but gave up on it because the performance was a joke. Playing this version on PC has been amazing so far.

Perhaps out of scope for this thread, but I'd really appreciate if people also posted the overal state of the game being emulated. Is it playable/beatable or is it just for show?

In most cases if a game boots to the point you can screenshot outside of maybe needing some tweaks they'll be playable.

more Haunting Ground (PCSX2, 1080p, 6x IR, GSdxFX, ReShade, camhack)

Curious, how do you use the camhack? You got gorgeous shots and I'm wondering if I can emulate (heh) your technique with my PS2 games.

Well, basically you have a set of memory addresses which stores camera coordinates as values in a certain format. By finding these addresses and changing their values (usually by the means of binding them to keys of the input devices) you can obtain camera control. The real pain here is finding the necessary addresses as every game (and even every regional edition) uses different addresses to store the coordinates, so every game requires its own camhack.

There is specialised soft for such kind of ordeal like memory scanners and debuggers. In some rare cases game already has a free camera as part of the debug menu left by the developers, albeit often locked by the default. I know for sure that ICO, Fatal Frame 1 and Silent Hill 2 have it.

There exists somewhat closed hacking community dedicated to making camera hacks and searching for the leftover debugging stuff. Some have their own youtube channels (Bigmanjapan, Nekorun, ShrineFox to name a few). Also a lot of interesting stuff can be found on resources like tcrf.net.

I myself have mainly theoretical knowledge of the actual hacking process and regretfully can't be of much help.
Oh, and Haunting Ground camhack is actually for the ntsc-j version, i can share the .pnach file if you want to try it.

Thanks. I'm using Direct3D 11 with MSAA. But you have to use a .pnach to remove the character shadows, or you'll get transparency issues. I think that's the only downside compared with OpenGL.

Thanks. I got a feeling that would be the case. I'd prefer to keep the shadows myself hence I used OpenGL in my shots.

It's a shame SMT IV wasn't exactly a looker like Nocturne, otherwise, I'll be more interested in taking screenshots of that game in Citra.

Now, for something completely different.

Game: Brandish 3: Spirit of Balcan
System: NEC PC-9801
Emulator: RetroArch/Neko Project II Kai core
Enhancements: none

Never thought pc-98 titles could be upscaled so beautifully. Does this core require a lot of custom configuration for such output?

A couple of leftover sh3 shots. I think i'll give it a rest until some proper camhack appears.

Not a lot, no. Graphics-wise, I basically turned off RetroArch's bilinear filtering and enabled integer scaling. For the np2kai settings, I set skipline revisions to 255 to disable scanlines emulation. I'll post some Policenauts shots over the weekend once I progressed in the game a little further, maybe.

Hey that's one thread I like a lot.

Will post here in the near future, my PC is a ticking time bomb and I just called all component to make a mini PC with a Ryzen 2400G, which is a wonder for retro emulation.

I'm actually looking to build something like that myself. I've been looking at the new asrock deskmini Ryzen board it's only 1.7liters and is one of the smallest standard PC's I've ever seen. Comes with a Mobo, case, and power supply.

For the casing I'm going with the InWin Chopin, a friend of mine built one with it and I just cannot not buy it after seeing it. :lol

Mobo will be MSI B450i AC Gaming Plus, seems like it's the most compatible with different kinds of RAM.

It's a very impressive little setup, it basically runs the likes of Dolphin and PCSX2 at 1440p, sometimes even 4K, but that depends on the game.
