This challenge came from Fiftyfifty. The challenge is simple: You have one year to read 50 new books and watch 50 new movies.

Rules:

  • 1- Read 50 NEW books and watch 50 NEW movies before Jan 1st 2024.
  • 2- You can join the challenge at any time.
  • 3- Be honest! Nobody is going to be making sure you actually read that book or watched that movie.

All you have to do is make a post in this very thread. Your initial post will be where you update your list. You MUST follow this format in order for your entry to be counted. In an effort to make it easier to navigate through the thread, I would like everyone to put their movie and book lists in quotes. Format:

TestMonkey - 04/50 books | 03/50 movies

Books:
  1. The Strange Case of Dr. Couney: How a Mysterious European Showman Saved Thousands of American Babies by Dawn Raffel
  2. The Poisoner's Handbook Book by Deborah Blum
  3. The Analects of Confucius by Confucius, translated by James Legge
  4. Reincarnation Blues by Michael Poore
Movies:
  1. Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead
  2. Seeking a Friend for the End of the World
  3. Weekend at Bernie's

This is important - I will be updating the Master Tracker (which will be in the second post of the OP) every month. If you want the Master Tracker to reflect your book/movie count, please do a separate update post at the end of each month. The update post should follow this format:

Toyotathon month update

TestMonkey - 05/50 books | 10/50 movies

Books:
  • On Cussing: Bad Words and Creative Cursing by Katherine Dunn
  • If Chins Could Kill: Confessions of a B Movie Actor by Bruce Campbell

Movies:
  • Knuckleball
  • Tokyo Godfathers
  • The Story of G.I. Joe

  • What do you mean by 'new'? It doesn't matter what year the book/movie was released in, as long as you have NEVER seen or read it before, it counts.
  • What is the prize for finishing the challenge? You win some brownie points.
  • What is stopping me from lying? Absolutely nothing, but, why would you?
  • Ok, I'm in. Who keeps track of what I read/watch? You do! Update your initial post as you rack up the books and movies.
  • What counts as a book? Anything over 100 pages.
  • What if it is really long? If it is more than 500 pages, you may count it as two books. But only two.
  • Do Audiobooks/Textbooks count? Yes.
  • What about comics/graphic novels? Use your best judgement. Rule of thumb, a "run" would be considered one book.
  • What counts as a movie? 90+ minutes of pure enjoyment.
  • Can I count my favorite TV show? Most will say no. If you do want to count them, one season = one movie. Use your best judgement. People do keep track of the shows they watch, but I won't keep stats on it.
  • Do Documentaries count? Yes.
Remember 100 page count/90 minute length are guidelines. Meaning, if you read a book that is 85 pages and you count it, nobody is going to yell at you. But if you start counting a bunch of 50 page books/short movies, people may call you out on it. This is meant to be a (fun) challenge. Keyword there is challenge.

Hints and Tips:
  • Don't sleep on audiobooks! That's one of the ways I'm always able to meet the 50 book criteria every year. I listen to audiobooks when going for walks, doing chores, cooking, etc. I try to listen to 1-2 audiobooks a month and it really helps!
  • Check out your local library! A lot of libraries these days offer both audiobooks and ebooks. Many use Overdrive or Libby, and you can download the ebooks to your Kindle or other e-reading devices.
  • If you need recommendations, check out Goodreads or Letterboxd. Or ask in this thread!

I'm in again !

I give it a shot. I'm currently reading two books and still have over 100 pages left on both of them. I'm going to count them as my 1 & 2 for the list early 2023 when I finish them. The books are Overstory (Richard Powers) and A Man (Keiichiro Hirano). I will report in once I'm done with them.
Overstory is a great book. Hope you enjoy it!

Done with my frist two books. Overstory was bit uneven for me. It's always a gamble when you have big cast and if all of the characters don't click with you then there is going to be boring stretches. First chapters were really great and made me want to read more Powers, he really managed to forge great back stories for the characters with such short chapters. But once the stories started to connect I just zoned out with couple of the characters. Some of the connections also didn't feel all that natural.

A Man starts out fascinating but doesn't go anywhere. Felt like the author just wanted to point one societal issue with every chapter and give kinda cursory water cooler take on it. And the chapters were 10p. long so they really were surface level takes.

Next on my reading list will be something from António Lobo Antunes and probably some scifi book. Recent Star Trek DS9 thread made me want to read sometihing Trek related.

Do y'all just read/listen to shorter books?

I've been listening to a lot of audio books over the past 2 years (I love it! Never read much, but love listening), and they are all like 15-20 hours long! I maybe got through a dozen last year. Haha.

I will take part again this year.

Last year I did 50 films from 50 countries. This year I will try to watch 50 films directed (or co-directed) by women.

For the books I will count longer books (500 pages or 15 hours) as two entries. I did get to 50 last year without doing that but I realized that it directed me towards shorter books. I will also try to include some comics this time around.

hiredhand - 39/50 books | 34/50 movies

Books:

1. The Truth and Other Stories by Stanisław Lem ★★★★★ - A scifi short story collection from the author best known for Solaris. Uncompromisingly hard scifi and very imaginative.
2./3. The Adventurer (Mikael Karvajalka) by Mika Waltari ★★★★★ - An epic historical adventure novel set in 16th century Europe. A long novel but an easy and entertaining read. More comical in tone compared to Waltari's most well known novel, The Egyptian.
4. The Second Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling ★★★★ - Another collection of jungle tales from Kipling (+ one random Inuit story). Less iconic but not much worse in quality than the first collection.
5. All Systems Red by Martha Wells ★★★★ - A novella about a cyborg security agent trying to protect a group of humans while struggling with its own humanity. A pretty basic story elevated by some great world building and an interesting protagonist. First part of the Murderbot Diaries series.
6. Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus by Mary Shelley ★★★★★ - The classic horror novel has aged remarkably well and is much more nuanced than most of its adaptations.
7. The Philosophy of Modern Song by Bob Dylan ★★★ - Dylan rambles on about various "modern" songs. The selection of songs is more interesting than what Dylan has to say about them.
8. We Spread by Iain Reid ★★★★ - A psychological thriller set in a nursing home some what reminiscent of The Father. Very good but not quite as strong and definitely not as original as Reid's two other novels.
9. Cinema Speculation by Quentin Tarantino ★★★★ - A collection of essays about 1970's American cinema and especially genre cinema (Bullitt, Dirty Harry, Rolling Thunder, Paraside Alley, The Funhouse...). The best essays are the ones that have an autobiographical angle to the subject. Highly recommended for anyone interested in the subject matter or the author.
10. This Perfect Day by Ira Levin ★★★★ - A dystopian novel from the writer of Rosemary's Baby and The Boys from Brazil. Very good but not quite on the level of something like Brave New World.
11. The Firm by John Grisham ★★ - The misogynist wife-cheating tax lawyer protagonist may have been viewed as a likable hero in 1991 but he certainly doesn't come across as one in 2023.
12. Asterix Omnibus Vol. 1 by René Goscinny and Albert Uderzo ★★★ - Comprises of first three Asterix volumes. The scale is smaller than in the later albums but most of the standard Asterix tropes are already present here.
13. Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro ★★★★ - Dystopian scifi novel set in alternate Britain where human cloning is common place. Very good but I expected bit more considering the high reputation of the novel.
14. The Third Policeman by Flann O'Brien ★★★★ - An absurdist comedic cult novel famously featured in Lost. Feels very ahead of its time for something written in 1940.
15. Tehanu by Ursula K. Le Guin ★★★ - A late sequel to the original Earthsea trilogy. A very different kind of book compared to the original trilogy: slow paced, introspective and serious but frankly also quite dull and plodding in places.
16. Red Badge of Courage by Stephen Crane ★★★★ - A classic American Civil War -set anti-war novel.
17. The Looting Machine: Warlords, Tycoons, Smugglers and the Systematic Theft of Africa's Wealth by Tom Burgis ★★★ - Interesting subject matter but the book is so dense that I had problems keeping up.
18. Role Models by John Waters ★★★★ - John Waters writes entertaining essays about his role models from singers and fashion designers to local Baltimore weirdos and gay porn directors.
19. Putkinotko by Joel Lehtonen ★★★★ - A classic of Finnish literature depicting the family of poor a sharecropper/moonshiner during one summer day.
20. Popmusiikin uusi aika: Satumaa-tangosta 2080-luvulle by Jukka Haarma, Anna-Kaisa Kaplas and Ilkka Mattila ★★★ - A non-fiction book about the rise of new Finnish pop music in the last few decades . Interesting but could have used more critical voices.
21. A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess ★★★★ - I read the (very good) Finnish translation and couldn't stop thinking how difficult the translation process must have been.
22. Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde by R.L. Stevenson ★★★★★ - Familiarity of the story for the modern reader doesn't lessen the effect of this horror classic.
23. Fen, Bog and Swamp: A Short History of Peatland Destruction and Its Role in the Climate Crisis by Annie Proulx ★★★★ - A bit unfocused but always interesting look at wetlands and their history and destruction.
24. Trust the Plan: The Rise of QAnon and the Conspiracy That Unhinged America by Will Sommer ★★★★ - A fascinating book that would be really funny if it wasn't real life.
25. The First Men in the Moon by H.G. Wells ★★★★ - A surprisingly over the top early space travel novel by one of the fathers of the genre.
26. The Crimson Circle by Edgar Wallace ★★★ - A pretty standard crime novel for its era. Not bad but not exactly memorable either.
27./28. The Silk Roads: A New History of the World by Peter Frankopan ★★★★ - An ambitious work that aims to present a new view on world history. A surprisingly easy read considering the scope.
29. Pyhiesi yhteyteen by Jari Tervo ★★★★ - A Lapland-set black comedy murder mystery from one of the most popular living Finnish authors. Really good.
30. Faith, Hope and Carnage by Nick Cave and Seán O'Hagan ★★★ - An interview book about Nick Cave made during and immediately after the pandemic. Some interesting and personal subjects are explored but I wish the interviewer would have challenged Cave more.
31. Kenen Kalevala? by Juha Hurme ★★★★ - A non-fiction book about the Finnish national epic, Kalevala and its true nature and legacy.
32. The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway ★★★★ - A semi-autobiographical novel and a travelogue about the lost generation living their life in Europe. Feels very modern for a novel written almost 100 years ago.
33./34. Pictures at a Revolution by Mark Harris ★★★★★ - An exploration of the birth of New Hollywood and the collapse of the old one through the making of processes of 1968 Oscar best picture candidates. One the best books about movies and Hollywood especially I have ever read.
35. Jalkapallon musta kirja: Kuningaslaji ja rahan mahti by Hannu Aaltonen and Tapio Keskitalo ★★★★ - A well-researched book about corruption in the world of international football.
36. Aurinko - tuttu ja tuntematon tähtemme by Hannu Koskinen and Emilia Kilpua ★★★★ - A non-fiction book about Sun. The emphasis is mostly on physics and astronomy but book also briefly deals with beliefs and other cultural things related to Sun.
37. Heart-Shaped Box by Joe Hill ★★★ - Joe Hill's debut novel about a rock star who is being haunted by ghost whose old suit he bought on the internet. Okay but this kind of slow burn horror isn't really my genre.
38. The Quarrel of Peace by Erasmus of Rotterdam ★★★ - Renaissance-era philosophers writings on peace in Europe and futility of war.
39. Elolliset by Iida Turpeinen ★★★★ - A really good and clever novel depicting the fates of several historical characters related to a rare skeleton of a Steller's sea cow currently in the collection of Finnish Museum of Natural History.

Movies:

1. Nanny (dir. Nikyatu Jusu, 2022) ★★★ - A thriller about the immigrant experience that would be better without any horror elements. Anna Diop is really good as the lead.
2. Booksmart (dir. Olivia Wilde, 2019) ★★★★ - A modern take on a classic johnhughesian end of high school story. The script is excellent and the cast is just perfect.
3. Tove (dir. Zaida Bergroth, 2020) ★★★ - A disappointingly by-the-book biopic about Moomin author Tove Jansson. Watchable but could have been so much more.
4. Stupid Young Heart (dir. Selma Vihunen, 2020) ★★★ - A film about teen pregnancy that would be better without the unnecessary and half-baked neo-Nazi/anti-immigration storyline.
5. The Blue Caftan (dir. Maryam Touzani, 2022) ★★★★★ - What sounded like a love triangle melodrama about forbidden love based on the synopsis turned out to be a delicate and warm exploration of different kinds of love. One of the best films of the year!
6. The Apple (dir. Samira Makhmalbaf, 1998) ★★★★ - The greatest film ever directed by a minor? Makhmalbaf was 17 when she directed this film about a pair of sisters who have been kept locked up by their parents for 11 years and are now released to explore the world outside of their home.
7. Chocolat (dir. Claire Denis, 1988) ★★★★ - Denis' semiautobiographical debut film about living and growing up in colonial Cameroon. Feels very mature and well-formed for a debut (Denis was already an industry veteran at this point as an assistant director).
8. Fire of Love (dir. Sara Dosa, 2022) ★★★★ - A documentary about volcanologist couple Katia and Maurice Krafft based on the material they shot during their journeys to world's active volcanoes. The original material is really special here and the director does a good job forming a narrative around it.
9. Nothing Compares (dir. Kathryn Ferguson, 2022) ★★★ - A pretty standard biographical documentary about Sinéad O'Connor. Maybe the focus could have been more on her music instead of controversies. Also I don't quite understand why the film stops at 1992.
10. Hester Street (dir. Joan Micklin Silver, 1975) ★★★★ - An early American indie film about New York Jewish community in the late 1800's that got Carol Kane an Oscar nomination (so in a way To Leslie of its day). A really posititive surprise. I love it how they kept much of the dialogue in Yiddish.
11. Man and a Baby (dir. Marja Pyykkö, 2017) ★★ - A pretty standard baby comedy. The central conflict of the latter half of the film feels really contrived.
12. Sweet Bean (dir. Naomi Kawase, 2015) ★★★ - An entertaining but slight film about a dorayaki shop that suddenly becomes very popular after the shopkeeper hires 76 year old Tokue to help with the sweet bean paste.
13. The Other Voice (dir. Annika Grof, 2022) ★★ - An unfortunately shoddy and aimless documentary on an important subject matter (the effects of the disastrous University act set by Finland's right wing government in 2009).
14. System Crasher (dir. Nora Fingscheidt, 2019) ★★★★ - A brilliant directorial debut about a violent traumatized girl who keeps getting pushed from one institution to another. Helena Zengel's lead performace is one of the best performances by a child actor I have ever seen.
15. One Fine Morning (dir. Mia Hansen-Løve, 2022) ★★★★ - A low-key drama about a single mother trying to balance taking care of her daughter, dating and taking care of her sick father. Good performances and a solid script.
16. Memory of Water (dir. Saara Saarela, 2022) ★★ - A flat, lifeless and unoriginal post-apocalyptic thriller from Finland. The source novel was quite well received on release so something must have been lost in adaptation here.
17. Aftersun (dir. Charlotte Wells, 2022) ★★★★★ - Maybe the best film of 2022 and one of all time greatest debuts. Great performances and score.
18.The Breadwinner (dir. Nora Twomey, 2017) ★★★ - Slightly disappointing Afghanistan-set solo effort from the co-director The Secret of Kells.
19. Babyteeth (dir. Shannon Murphy, 2019) ★★★ - Australian coming-og-age film that is better than it's cliched YA premise would suggest. The cast is very strong.
20. Certain Women (dir. Kelly Reichardt, 2016) ★★★★★ - Kelly Reichardt's best film and one of the best American films of the 2010's. Lily Gladstone episode especially is just perfect.
21. Faces Places (dir. Agnes Varda and JR, 2017) ★★★★ - I'm generally not a big fan of the French new wave directors but I really enjoyed this late documentary work from Agnes Varda.
22. Saint Omer (dir. Alice Diop, 2022) ★★★ - A slow and talky French courtroom drama about colonialism and family. Didn't quite live up to the hype for me.
23. Blue Jean (dir. Georgia Oakley, 2022) ★★★★ - A teacher is trying to navigate being gay in 1980's Britain. A very strong feature debut.
24. The Eternal Daughter (dir. Joanna Hogg, 2022) ★★★ - Joanne Hogg's pseudo-horror film starring mostly just Tilda Swinton. I don't feel like the premise is quite enough for a feature length film.
25. Smoke Sauna Sisterhood (dir. Anna Hints, 2023) ★★★★ - An atmospheric Estonian documentary about smoke saunas and women who use them.
26. Kajillionaire (dir. Miranda July, 2020) ★★★ - An above average indie dramedy with a good cast.
27. Barbie (dir. Greta Gerwig, 2023) ★★★ - A funny comedy/satire that chokes on its own meta-cleverness in the third act.
28. Vagabond (dir. Agnes Varda, 1985) ★★★★ - A female drifter travels from place to place doing odd jobs and just trying to survive. Grim but affecting.
29. Woman Walks Ahead (dir. Susanna White, 2017) ★★ - Is it really still too much to ask to have a film about a major Native American figure without it being told from the perspective of an upperclass white lady?
30. Petite maman (dir. Céline Sciamma, 2021) ★★★★ - A small fantasy film about childhood from the director of Portrait of a Lady on Fire. Good but doesn't quite live up to the hype for me.
31. High Life (dir. Claire Denis, 2018) ★★★★ - A very good genre excursion from Claire Denis.
32. Sea Fever (dir. Neasa Hardiman, 2019) ★★★ - An Irish horror thriller about a parasite taking over a fishing ship. It was okay.
33. Trouble Every Day (dir. Claire Denis, 2001) ★★ - A not so good genre excursion from Claire Denis.
34. Je'vida (dir. Katja Gauriloff, 2023) ★★★ - This first feature film in Skolt Sámi language about lost roots and stolen cultural heritage is affecting but slightly let down by some shoddy writing and uneven tone.

I guess I'm done for the month of January. I did pretty good, but two of the books were half read by the time new year started, probably won't make it to 50 at current pace, but I'll keep trying. Going to read 2666 next and it's gonna take at least a month. But I keep reading Star Trek books on the side to stack up my stats.

January update:

Books [Januray]
1. A Man - Hirano Keiichiro
2. Overstory - Powers Richard
3. Star Trek The Entropy Effect - Vonda N. McIntyre
4. The Return of the Caravels - António Lobo Antunes
5. Star Trek My Enemy, My Ally - Diane Duane

Movies [Januray]
1. Ghost Writer
2. Glass Onion
3. Star Trek Motion Picutre
3. Star Trek Search for Spock
4. The Menu

January totals

Movies: 3/50
Miss S [tv]
Mainland Chinese version of Miss Fisher, where the makers are so deathly afraid of censorship they take out all the bits that made it edgy, which is the point of most of the mysteries. Somehow each episode is lengthened while the story is destroyed. Although I've only seen the Australian tv show and not read the book sources, this was a bit painful to watch. Miss Fisher needs to stop being marooned on PAL streaming services.

The Fabulous [tv]
Cute and short k-drama on Netflix in my region. Easy to watch although job stress is a strong issue for the characters.

The Pez Outlaw [documentary]
I knew Pez dispensers were collectible but not to what degree the community was insular. Some people get a "no comment" from literally everyone when asked for gossip about them. The documentary seems to want the viewer to sympathize with the "outlaw", who is only violating civil contract agreements and not LAW law, but I'm the wrong audience for that.

Books: 6/50. Don't feel stressed by numbers, I'm here for the movie challenge. 50 books is not a challenge to me personally but this isn't A contest.
A Magic Steeped in Poison, by Judy Lin
A Venom Dark and Sweet, by Judy Lin
Duology set in a fantasy world based on Asia, with people whose magical abilities are related to tea. The concept sounded amazing, and the writing is fine. Slight disappointment for me as the magic system develops into being more about water than tea specifically, and elemental magic is well supplied in the genre. Would read again though.

Spin the Dawn, by Elizabeth Lim
Similar to the previous books in being an Asian fantasy setting with a female protagonist, a magic system related to craft skills, and a contest at the imperial palace. Less well written in that situations and characters are too YA, with surface level happenings/motivations and a lack of segue between scenes. Reading second book in duology but might not find worthy of shelf space.

Laziness Does Not Exist, by Devon Price
Fairly pleasant nonfiction about how current society endorses overwork and makes no allowances for variances in learning methods/abilities. Especially Written for people who live with learning disabilities or ADHD, whether diagnosed early or not, who have absorbed the feeling that they're not doing enough.

Nona the Ninth, by Tamsyn Muir [Locked Tomb book 3]
I guess I'm now on the long list of people waiting for Alecto. After 3 books I have no idea what is happening or who anyone is. Genuinely going to need a reread or five to have a clue, like watching a complicated con/heist movie. There are just too many moving parts here, lol.

The Tombs of Atuan, by Ursula Le Guin [Earthsea book 2]
Book club selection. I may have read this when I was 12, but I don't remember any of it, so I'm counting it as a new read. I'll continue with the series, my endorsement of it isn't needed, it's famous enough Already.

hiredhand - 3/50 books | 5/50 movies

Books:

Movies:

  5. Cleaner (2007) ★★★
  6. Madoff (2023)* ★★★★
  7. The Electrical Life of Louis Wain (2017) ★★★
  8. Roald Dahl's Matilda The Musical (2022) ★★★1/2
  9. The Hatchet Wielding Hitchhiker (2023) ★★★1/2

  11. The Menu (2022) ★★★★1/2
  12. The Batman (2022) ★★★★
  13. Gravity (2013) ★★★★
I felt kinda silly reading Prince Harry's memoir but his ghostwriter did an excellent job and overall, it was pretty compelling. And very dishy. (Hate that word but it's perfect for describing the book.)

I doubt I'll watch even 10 movies this year, I just generally would rather play a game over watching a movie... But I've probably read 6-7 books this year. I won't join since I definitely won't finish the movie portion but this is a cool thread, gonna keep my eye on it.

February update

hiredhand - 10/50 books | 8/50 movies

Books:
A pretty basic story elevated by some great worldbuilding and an interesting protagonist.
8. We Spread by Iain Reid ★★★★ - A psychological thriller set in a nursing home what reminiscent of The Father.

Movies:
